  • A three-dimensional panel system, which was offered as a new method for construction in Jordan using relatively high strength modular panels for walls and ceilings, is investigated in this paper. The panel consists of two steel meshes on both sides of an expanded polystyrene core and connected together with a truss wire to provide a 3D system. The top face of the ceiling panel was pored with regular concrete mix, while the bottom face and both faces of the wall panels were cast by shotcreting (dry process). To investigate the structural performance of this system, an extensive experimental testing program for ceiling and wall panels subjected to static and dynamic loadings was conducted. The load-deflection curves were obtained for beam and shear wall elements and wall elements under transverse and axial loads, respectively. Static and dynamic analyses were conducted, and the performance of the proposed structural system was evaluated and compared with a typical three dimensional reinforced concrete frame system for buildings of the same floor areas and number of floors. Compressive strength capacity of a ceiling panel is determined for gravity loads, while flexural capacity is determined under the effect of wind and seismic loading. It was found that, the strength and serviceability requirements could be easily satisfied for buildings constructed using the three-dimensional panel system. The 3D panel system is superior to that of conventional frame system in its dynamic performance, due to its high stiffness to mass ratio.

  • This paper describes a feasibility analysis result of STATCOM application for the Jeju-Haenam HVDC system. The Jeju-Haenam HVDC system is one of the typical HVDC system interconnected with the low short-circuit-ratio AC system, which is vulnerable to the commutation failure due to the AC voltage variation. STATCOM has been considered as an effective reactive-power compensator to increase short-circuit-ratio of the interconnected AC system. In this study, a simulation model of Jeju-Hacnam HVDC system with STATCOM was developed using PSCAD/EMTDC. The developed simulation model was utilized to analyze the dynamic performance analysis of Jeju-Haenam HVDC system with STATCOM. The analysis results show that STATCOM can improve the dynamic performance of Jeju-Haenam HVDC system, such as load-change recovery performance and fault recovery performance.

  • A FQI(fatigue quality index) analysis using the concept of SF(severity factor) is performed to various shape of elliptical hole. FQI is fatigue quality index to estimate the dynamic SF from static SF by finite element analysis. Since the SF is affected by the location of cutout in plate and radius ratio, static SF is analyzed with finite element method and forms the equation of FQI for predicting a dynamic SF. To examine the validity, dynamic SF is measured by photoelastics and thermalelastics for an epoxy resin plate with various elliptical holes under dynamic load.

  • In the present study, microstructure-dependent static stability analysis of inhomogeneous tapered micro-columns is performed. It is considered that the micro column is made of functionally graded materials and has a variable cross-section. The material and geometrical properties of micro column vary continuously throughout the axial direction. Euler-Bernoulli beam and modified couple stress theories are used to model the nonhomogeneous micro column with variable cross section. Rayleigh-Ritz solution method is implemented to obtain the critical buckling loads for various parameters. A detailed parametric study is performed to examine the influences of taper ratio, material gradation, length scale parameter, and boundary conditions. The validity of the present results is demonstrated by comparing them with some related results available in the literature. It can be emphasized that the size-dependency on the critical buckling loads is more prominent for bigger length scale parameter-to-thickness ratio and changes in the material gradation and taper ratio affect significantly the values of critical buckling loads.

  • The vehicle loading test under the strict traffic control is generally carried out as a present practice in an evaluation process of the bearing capacity of a bridge. The quasi-static load test is recently proposed to mitigate the traffic condition of test, and analyze the disturbed acceleration time-history data of free vibration due to the ambient traffic on the bridge by Fourier transform to calculate only the natural frequencies of the bridge. The calculated frequencies have some errors due to the analysis technique as well as the influence of ambient traffic loads, and in addition to it is cumbersome to obtain the free vibration data during a quasi-static load test. In this study, the wavelet transform technique using Morlet wavelet is used to analyze the acceleration data recorded during a quasi-static load test on a bridge and calculate the natural frequencies and the modal damping ratios of the bridge. The study results show that the wavelet transform technique is a reliable and reasonable method to analyze test data and obtain the natural frequencies and the modal damping ratios of a bridge regardless of the data types i.e. free or forced vibrations.

  • This study was conducted to provide fundamental data for design of air inflating apparatus of air-inflated double-layer plastic greenhouse. The variation of static pressure in air tube for different fans and filters, filtering performance for various kinds of filters and destruction phase of experimental greenhouse collapsed by excessive static pressure in air space were analyzed. The general type of forward centrifugal fan was recommended for inflating air space in air-inflated double-layer plastic greenhouse. The experimental greenhouse was collapsed down by excessive static pressure just like fallen by heavy snow load acting on it. The static pressure in air tube without filter decreased linearly as the number of outlet openings increased. But the pressure in air tube with filter declined quadratically, the decremental ratio diminished by the increase of outlet openings. The higher filtering efficiency and the greater decrements of static pressure in air tube, the larger capacity fan was required for maintaining proper static pressure in air space. Because the porosities of filter were blocked by dust as time goes by, the static pressure in air tube with filter decreased. The higher filtering efficiency, the less decremental ratio of static pressure in air tube as time passes by. Considering the filtering efficiency, decrement of static pressure and thickness of filter, the 5mm thickness filter of 75% efficiency was recommended for air inflating filter of air-inflated double-layer plastic greenhouse.

  • Steel fiber and Polymer are used widely for the reinforcement material of RC structures because of its excellence of durability, serviceability as well as mechanical properties. Polymer-Steel fibrous high strength concrete beam's input ratio are 1.0%. The shear span-to-depth ratio are 1.5, 2.8 and 3.6, compressive strength of specimens 320kg/㎠, 436kgf/㎠ and 520kgf/㎠ in 28 days. The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural crack and of diagonal crack, from which crack patte군 and fracture modes are earned. Also, stress-strain, load-strain and load-deflection are examined during the test cracks(shear crack, flexural crack, and diagonal tension crack), when the load values are sketched according to the growth of crack. Result are as follows; (1) The failure modes of the specimens increase in rigidity and durability in accordance with the increase of mixing steel fiber and polymer. (2) The load of initial crack was the same as the theory of shear-crack strength (3) Polymer-Steel fibrous high strength concrete beams have increased the deflection and strain at failure load, improving the brittleness of the high strength concrete. (4) In this result of study, an additional study need to make a need formular because the study is different from ACI formular and Zsutty formular.

  • In this research, the relationships between static bimaterial constant and dynamic oscillation index are studied. It was certified that static bimaterial constant has the same form equation as the dynamic oscillation index. Bimaterial constant and oscillation index are increased with the increment of Young's modulus ratio and approached to the some value. Isochromatic fringe patterns are slanted to the left side with increment of bimaterial constants and oscillation index. Though patterns of stress components in above the crack surface are similar to each other, their magnitudes are different a little. In the ahead of crack tip, there are big differences in the isochromatic fringe patterns and their magnitudes. The influence of bimaterial with Young's modulus ratio is bigger in the propagation crack than in the stationary crack.

  • Auxetic material is a material which has negative Poisson's ratio(NPR). Auxetic material shows some distinctive property like high energy absorbing property and high shear modulus. Among these, synclastic curvature is very interesting characteristic. When synclastic-curvature-material bends, it changes its shape like dome, contrary to non-auxetic material which changes its shape like saddle(anticlastic). This distinctive property could make it easy to manufacture curved structure like nose cone or wing panel in aerospace engineering. In this study, we studied a quantitative analysis about synclastic curvature of re-entrant panel with finite element model. We suggested a concept 'Degree of Synclasticity(DOS)', which means a ratio of curvature of load-direction and load-orthogonal direction. We studied the variation of DOS with two factor, unit cell inner angle(${\theta}$) and load position angle(${\phi}$). DOS decreases as ${\theta}$ increases because the unit cell goes out of auxetic-shape. As ${\phi}$ varies, DOS changes in a large range. So proper optimization of ${\phi}$ would be needed for application.
