As a new structural system, the diagrid system resists both gravity and lateral loads with diagonal columns. In current seismic design provisions, however, the response modification factor for a new structural system is not provided yet. ATC-63 provides a new methodology for defining various seismic performance factors, including the response modification factor. ATC-63 includes the collapse margin ratio in modifying the response modification factor, which can vary with many structural systems. In this paper, a non-linear static analysis and a dynamic analysis were conducted for four different diagrid models with 4-to 36-story heights. From these analyses, the response modification factor of the diagrid system was evaluated.

In this study the progressive collapse potential of braced frames were investigated using the nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. All of nine different brace types were considered along with a special moment-resisting frame for comparison. According to the pushdown analysis results, most braced frames designed per current design codes satisfied the design guidelines for progressive collapse initiated by loss of a first story mid-column; however most model structures showed brittle failure mode. This was caused by buckling of columns after compressive braces buckled. Among the braced frames considered, the inverted- V type braced frames showed superior ductile behavior during progressive collapse. The nonlinear dynamic analysis results showed that all the braced frame model structures remained in stable condition after sudden removal of a column, and their deflections were less than that of the moment-resisting frame.
To study how stable the rubble mound breakwaters are, one can look to the research of wave induced seepage flow through the pores of the rubble mound. Seepage flow is generally generated by the difference between the water level around the breakwater during a typhoon. The existing stability analysis method of the rubble mound is the static analysis which simply considers the force equilibrium taking into account the horizontal force acting on the concrete block induced by a wave (calculated by Goda equation) and the vertical force induced by the weight inclusive of the concrete block, quarry run, filter, and armor layer above the slipping plane. However, this static method does not consider the wave-induced seepage flow in the rubble mound. Such seepage may decrease the stability of the rubble mound. The stability of a rubble mound breakwater under the action of seepage was studied based on the results of CFD software (OpenFOAM) and Limit Equilibrium Method (GeoStudio). The numerical analysis result showed that the seepage flow decreased the stability of the rubble mound breakwaters. The results of the numerical analyses also revealed the stability of the rubble mound was varied with time. Especially, the most critical state happened at the condition of overtopping the concrete block, acting strong uplift pressure raising along side and underneath the concrete block, and generating high pore pressure inside rubble mound due to seepage flow. Therefore, it may be necessary to conduct a dynamic analysis considering the effect of wave-induce seepage flow together with the static analysis.
Inelastic static pushover analysis has been used in the academic-research widely for seismic analysis of structures. Nowadays, the variety pushover analysis methods have been developed, including Modal pushover, Adaptive pushover, and Cyclic pushover, in which some weaknesses of the conventional pushover method have been rectified. In the conventional pushover analysis method, the effects of cumulative growth of cracks are not considered on the reduction of strength and stiffness of RC members that occur during earthquake or cyclic loading. Therefore, the Cyclic Pushover Analysis Method (CPA) has been proposed. This method is a powerful technique for seismic evaluation of regular reinforced concrete buildings in which the first mode of them is dominant. Since the bridges have different structures than buildings, their results cannot necessarily be attributed to bridges, and more research is needed. In this study, a cyclic pushover analysis with four loading protocols (suggested by valid references) by the Opensees software was conducted for seismic evaluation of two regular reinforce concrete bridges. The modeling method was validated with the comparison of the analytical and experimental results under both cyclic and dynamic loading. The failure mode of the piers was considered in two-mode of flexural failure and also a flexural-shear failure. Along with the cyclic analysis, conventional analysis has been studied. Also, the nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) method has been used to examine and compare the results of pushover analyses. The time history of 20 far-field earthquake records was used to conduct IDA. After analysis, the base shear vs. displacement in the middle of the deck was drawn. The obtained results show that the cyclic pushover analysis method is able to evaluate an accurate seismic behavior of the reinforced concrete piers of the bridges. Based on the results, the cyclic pushover has proper convergence with IDA. Its accuracy was much higher than the conventional pushover, in which the bridge piers failed in flexural-shear mode. But, in the flexural failure mode, the results of each two pushover methods were close approximately. Besides, the cyclic pushover method with ACI loading protocol, and ATC-24 loading protocol, can provided more accurate results for evaluating the seismic investigation of the bridges, specially if the bridge piers are failed in flexural-shear failure mode.

Steel intermediate moment frames (IMFs) have been generally used as seismic load resisting systems (SLRSs) of a building to provide resistances against strong ground shaking. However, most of low and mid-rise steel buildings in Korea were constructed during pre-seismic code era or before the introduction of well-organized current seismic codes. It has been recognized that the seismic performance of these steel IMFs is still questionable. In order to respond to such a question, this study quantitatively investigates the seismic capacities of steel IMFs. Prototype models are built according to the number of stories, the levels of elastic seismic design base shear and the ductilities of structural components. Also, the other prototype models employing hysteretic energy dissipating devices (HEDDs) are considered. The collapse mechanism and the seismic performance of the prototype models are then described based on the results obtained from nonlinear-static and incremental-dynamic analyses. The seismic performance of the prototype models is assessed from collapse margin ratio (CMR) and collapse probability. From the assessment, the prototype model representing new steel IMFs has enough seismic capacities while, the prototype models representing existing steel IMFs provide higher collapse probabilities. From the analytic results of the prototype models retrofitted with HEDDs, the HEDDs enhance the seismic performance and collapse capacity of the existing steel IMFs. This is due to the energy dissipating capacity of the HEDDs and the redistribution of plastic hinges.
In traditional eccentrically braced steel frames, damages and plastic deformations are limited to the links and the main structure members are required tremendous sizes to ensure elasticity with no damage based on the force-based seismic design method, this limits the practical application of the structure. The high strength steel frames with eccentric braces refer to Q345 (the nominal yield strength is 345 MPa) steel used for links, and Q460 steel utilized for columns and beams in the eccentrically brace steel frames, the application of high strength steels not only brings out better economy and higher strength, but also wider application prospects in seismic fortification zone. Here, the structures with four type eccentric braces are chosen, including K-type, Y-type, D-type and V-type. These four types EBFs have various performances, such as stiffness, bearing capacity, ductility and failure mode. To evaluate the seismic behavior of the high strength steel frames with variable eccentric braces within the similar performance objectives, four types EBFs with 4-storey, 8-storey, 12-storey and 16-storey were designed by performance-based seismic design method. The nonlinear static behavior by pushover analysis and dynamic performance by time history analysis in the SAP2000 software was applied. A total of 11 ground motion records are adopted in the time history analysis. Ground motions representing three seismic hazards: first, elastic behavior in low earthquake hazard level for immediate occupancy, second, inelastic behavior of links in moderate earthquake hazard level for rapid repair, and third, inelastic behavior of the whole structure in very high earthquake hazard level for collapse prevention. The analyses results indicated that all structures have similar failure mode and seismic performance.

Recently, various types of structural systems for skyscrapers are studied as the height and size of the building structures rapidly increase due to social and economical needs. The mega frame system among them, which is the structural system developed recently, is known as a suitable structural system for skyscrapers because this structural system has sufficient stiffness against the lateral forces by combination of mega members which consist of many columns and girders. Since the mega frame structure has significant numbers of elements and nodes, it takes tremendous times and computer memories to analyze and design the structures. Therefore, the exclusive structural analysis program for mega frame system is developed to reduce the efforts and time required for the analysis and design of mega frame structure. To this end, an efficient modelling technique using the characteristics of mega frame structures and an efficient analytical model, which uses a few DOFs selected by the user using the matrix condensation method, are developed in this study. Static and dynamic analyses are conducted using an example structure. The effectiveness and accuracy of the developed program we verified by the comparison between the results of the proposed method and the conventional method.
According to the new directives about the rational and efficient use of energy, thermal bridges in buildings have to be avoided, and the thermal insulation (TI) layer should run without interruptions all around the building - even under its foundations. The paper deals with the seismic response of multi-storeyed reinforced concrete (RC) frame building structures founded on an extruded polystyrene (XPS) layer placed beneath the foundation slab. The purpose of the paper is to elucidate the problem of buildings founded on a TI layer from the seismic resistance point of view, to assess the seismic behaviour of such buildings, and to search for the critical parameters which can affect the structural and XPS layer response. Nonlinear dynamic and static analyses were performed, and the seismic response of fixed-base (FB) and thermally insulated (TI) variants of nonlinear RC building models were compared. Soil-structure interaction was also taken into account for different types of soil. The results showed that the use of a TI layer beneath the foundation slab of a superstructure generally induces a higher peak response compared to that of a corresponding system without TI beneath the foundation slab. In the case of stiff structures located on firm soil, amplification of the response might be substantial and could result in exceedance of the superstructure's moment-rotation plastic hinge capacities or allowable lateral roof and interstorey drift displacements. In the case of heavier, slenderer, and higher buildings subjected to stronger seismic excitations, the overall response is governed by the rocking mode of oscillation, and as a consequence the compressive strength of the XPS could be insufficient. On the other hand, in the case of low-rise and light-weight buildings, the friction capacity between the layers of the applied TI foundation set might be exceeded so that sliding could occur.
With speeding up the process of being international municipality, the gravity of lacking parking lots in Shanghai urban area, which directly blocks the traffic in the city, has been revealed. This thesis analyses present automobiles parking capability and forecasts the future's needs for the city. To solve the problem, the concept could be to expand parking areas in city center recently to relax the tention and to do thoughtful planning in the near future on the foundation of fully consideration the trend. The municipal government has to set up policy properly, amplify regulations, strenthern the administration and open up a path to raise founds. Berween road system administration which is dynamic and parking lot system administration which is static, there are a knot on macroscopic meaning and an interference as well. The coordination of these two systems would be reflested on the effects of whole municipal traffic adminisration. Basically, public parking lots are city's foundal facilities, just like roads, bridges, etc. The main problems now in Shanghai are large parking space demands, insufficient facilities, cheap parking expenses comparing with the cost of parking lots construcion and poor administration. According to the forecast on social economy development, there will be 580 thousand automobiles in Shanghai by the year 2000, and the amount of private cars will increase greatly. The frequency of automobiles going out will be 1.45 million per day. Public parking lots being able to afford 105 thousand units are needed. To satisfy the demands, the recent aim of planning should be speed up the parking lots construction, the planning objective in next period should be developing reasonably and exceed the demands properly. In order to realize the planning objective, the government has to formulate correct policy and amplify administration regulations. The government has to adopt both administration and economy means, including charging parking people reasonably, collect necessary taxes, bringing the parking lots planning into general municipality planning, opening up an effective path to raise founds, such as set up founds for parking lots construction, issue bonds and stocks, get loans at home and abroad, etc.

The up and down speed of heddle frames that produce woven cloth by insertion of weft yarns between warp yarns has been increased recently much for productivity improvement, which induces higher inertial stresses and vibrations in the heddle frame. the heddle frame is required to reduce its mass because the heddle frame contributes the major portion of the stresses in the heddle frames during accelerating and decelerating. Conventional aluminum heddle frames have fatigue life of around 5 months at 550rpm due to their low fatigue flexural strength as well as low bending stiffness. In this work, since carbon/epoxy composite materials have high specific fatigue strength(S/p), high specific modulus(E/p), high damping capacity and sandwich construction results in lower deflections and higher buckling resistance, the sandwich structure composed of carbon/epoxy composite skins and polyurethane foam were employed for the high-speed heddle frame. The design map for the sandwich beams was accomplished to determine the optimum thickness and the stacking sequences for the heddle frames. Also the effects of the number of ribs on the stress of the heddle frame were investigated by FEM analyses. Finally, the high-speed heddle frames were manufactured with sandwich structures and the static and dynamic properties of the aluminum and the composite heddle frames were tested and compared with each other.
