  • Pennsylvania is one of the states that adopted the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) and crafted its own standards (The PA Core State Standards). Pennsylvania teachers are required to have a clear understanding of the PA Core Standards. It is timely and appropriate to study Pennsylvania teachers' beliefs, as the standards have been adopted and implemented for several years since the revision of the PA Core Standards (2014). This study examined how eight western Pennsylvania elementary school teachers' beliefs about teaching and learning mathematics related to the SMP. To this end, I conducted an in-depth interview with each participating teacher. The in-depth interviews featured the teachers' overarching mathematical instructional goals and their productive beliefs. Furthermore, I linked these beliefs with the CCSSM Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP).

  • The purpose of this study is to introduce the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for mathematics which is released on June 2, 2010 in the U.S.A. The common core state standards are aligned with college and work expectations, and include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills. The most distinguishable differences between the CCSS standards and the NCTM standards are that the CCSS standards considers the mathematical modeling as one of the mathematical content domains such as algebra, geometry, ets, and the standards are designed by working together with school leaders of all states.

  • For the first time ever in its history, the United States has a national version for K-12 mathematics programs, the Com-mon Core State Standards for Mathematics. Since its final version appeared in 2010 in the United States, the Common Core State Standards have started getting much attention from the Korean mathematics and mathematics education communities. Although attempts have been made to translate the original text of the stan-dards, the information such as the paradigm shift that led to the development of the standards, design principles and a comparison with the NCTM Standards would aid understating the standards in the intended way and avoiding unnecessary confusion.

  • This study examined the Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) National Standards with some examples at the state level, analyzed the previous studies relevant to curriculum implementation in the USA, and explored critical success factors in moving toward the new perspective curriculum in exemplary states. The process, in which the FCS discipline struggled to clarify the identity and image as well as to find the mission and vision, produced the FCS National Standards in 1998 and 2008 in the USA. The FCS National Standards were established to fulfill the mission of the FCS based on a critical science perspective. The previous research on a state level implementation indicated that the majority of FCS state administrators agreed that the National Standards positively influenced curriculum development. The critical success factors in integrating National Standards into local programs included the dissemination of thephilosophical works of Marjorie Brown, the foundation of the FCS curriculum with a critical science perspective, the establishment of National Standards corresponding to the philosophical works and a critical science perspective, the openness of state FCS administrators to educational reform, the construction of an infrastructure to support reform, and the commitment by university professors to develop a teacher training program. The critical success factors identified can be employed as an informative guide for the future development and implementation of the Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum in Korea.

  • Whether a ship is sub-standard or not shall be finally decided by the minimum standards laid down in international conventions or national standards having the same effects. The flag State is primarily responsible for implementing these standards as far as its own ships are concerned. And the port State shall, in the exercise of its rights under international law, take appropriate measures (including detention of ships identified as sub-standard), which are regarded as port State's supplementary role aiming at implementing these standards. The international standards are implemented by the regional co-operation in the form of the MOU(Memorandum of Understanding) on Port State Control in the Asia-Pacific Region on the ground that the PSC enforcement of only one country does not enable the eradication of sub-standard ships. Recently, EQUASIS which is an international database covering the whole world fleet change the regionalism of PSC into the globalization of PSC. However, there are many problems in Tokyo MOV and Korean PSC regime. In order to ensure the implementation of the standards laid down in international conventions and Tokyo MOU, the Korean and other country in Asia-Pacific shall settle the alienation from the actuality of the law, namely the problem of maritime administrative structure of non unifying PSC affairs.

  • As the variability of recent rainfall is increasing, it is becoming important to recognize the possibility of changes in the current reservoir state in advance and to inspect the stability based on accurate evaluation standards. However, the evaluation standards for the state change factors of reservoirs are still not suitable for agricultural reservoirs and thus much improvement is needed. Therefore, in this study, the evaluation criteria for state change factors specialized for small reservoirs were categorized and standards were prepared by considering factors that may cause state changes on the dam crest, upstream slope, and downstream slope of the embankment. The categorized results were configured based on the number of mentions of the precision safety inspection report on major defects in 102 reservoirs and the defect factors found in field investigations. The findings of the study indicated that the current state change standards require many revisions for excessive or unnecessary state change factors in the reservoir. Specifically, the deletion of measurement gauges not applicable to the reservoir, the addition of defects found in the reservoir, and the scope of use of the term were proposed. The results of this study can contribute to efficient system operation and management by improving the deficiencies in the system and introducing a new state change factor.
