  • In this study, we proposed an optical compensation method to improve the symmetricity of contrast ratio for wide viewing angle IPS (in-plane switching) LCD. First, the phase retardation depending on the thickness of compensation film is calculated, and then the phase change is presented at the $Poincar{\acute{e}}$ sphere. The phase retardation and the polarization state of the light passing through the optical elements are caculated by using the EJMM (extended Jones matrix method). In addition, the transmittance and the contrast countour are also calculated by using the Berremann's $4{\times}4$ matrix method. The simulation is carried out for a IPS LC cell with positive A/C/A compensation film. From the standard deviation of the contrast ratio, we confirmed the symmetricity at each viewing angle is inversely proportional to the standard deviation and calculated the optimum design condition of the uniaxial compensation film for the IPS LCD.

  • This paper describes a design of cryptographic processor that implements the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) block cipher algorithm, "Rijndael". An iterative looping architecture using a single round block is adopted to minimize the hardware required. To achieve high throughput rate, a sub-pipeline stage is added by dividing the round function into two blocks, resulting that the second half of current round function and the first half of next round function are being simultaneously operated. The round block is implemented using 32-bit data path, so each sub-pipeline stage is executed for four clock cycles. The S-box, which is the dominant element of the round block in terms of required hardware resources, is designed using arithmetic circuit computing multiplicative inverse in GF($2^8$) rather than look-up table method, so that encryption and decryption can share the S-boxes. The round keys are generated by on-the-fly key scheduler. The crypto-processor designed in Verilog-HDL and synthesized using 0.25-$\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS cell library consists of about 23,000 gates. Simulation results show that the critical path delay is about 8-ns and it can operate up to 120-MHz clock Sequency at 2.5-V supply. The designed core was verified using Xilinx FPGA board and test system.

  • The aim of this work is a numerical comparison (FEM) between lattice pyramidal-core panel and honeycomb core panel for different core thicknesses. By evaluating the mid-span deflection, the shear rigidity and the shear modulus for both core types and different core thicknesses, it is possible to define which core type has got the best mechanical behaviour for each thickness and the evolution of that behaviour as far as the thickness increases. Since a specific base geometry has been used for the lattice pyramidal core, the comparison gives us the opportunity to investigate the unit cell strut angle giving the higher mechanical properties. The presented work considers a detailed FEM modelling of a standard 3-point bending test (ASTM C393/C393M Standard Practice). Detailed FEM modelling addresses to detailed discretization of cores by means of beam elements for lattice core and shell elements for honeycomb core. Facings, instead, have been modelled by using shell elements for both sandwich panels. On lattice core structure, elements of core and facings are directly connected, to better simulate the additive manufacturing process. Otherwise, an MPC-based constraint between facings and core has been used for honeycomb core structure. Both sandwich panels are entirely built of Aluminium alloy. Prior to compare the two models, the FEM sandwich panel model with lattice pyramidal core needs to be validated with 3-point bending test experimental results, in order to ensure a good reliability of the FEM approach and of the comparison. Furthermore, the analytical validation has been performed according to Allen's theory. The FEM analysis is linear static with an increasing midspan load ranging from 50N up to 500N.

  • CIGS solar cells are thin film solar cells that have excellent light absorption coefficient and can be manufactured with high efficiency through the use of low materials. In Korea, they must pass KS certification for home and commercial installation. KS C 8562 is a standard for evaluating the durability of CIGS and thin film amorphous silicon solar modules and deals with contents such as light, temperature, humidity, and mechanical durability. Unlike general crystalline silicon solar modules, the CIGS solar module has a different behavior of output change through these environmental tests, so if it shows 90% or more of the rated output suggested by the manufacturer after the final test, it is judged to be a suitable product. In this paper, the output before and after individual tests was measured through the test method of KS C 8562 to observe the output change and to discover the vulnerabilities of the CIGS solar module when exposed to various environments. Through this, it was confirmed that humidity exposure was the most vulnerable and that it had output recovery characteristics for light (visible light and ultraviolet rays). This study attempted to present the output behavior characteristics and data of the CIGS module at the time when the high efficiency thin film photovoltaic module market is expected to be created in the future.

  • Pulsed field ablation (PFA) was recently rediscovered as an emerging treatment modality for the ablation of cardiac arrhythmias. Ultra-short high voltage pulses are leading to irreversible electroporation of cardiac cells subsequently resulting in cell death. Current literature of PFA for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) consistently reported excellent acute and long-term efficacy along with a very low adverse event rate. The undeniable benefit of the novel ablation technique is that cardiac cells are more susceptible to electrical fields whereas surrounding structures such as the pulmonary veins, the phrenic nerve or the esophagus are not, or if at all, minimally affected, which results in a favorable safety profile that is expected to be superior to the current standard of care without compromising efficacy. Nevertheless, the exact mechanisms of electroporation are not yet entirely understood on a cellular basis and pulsed electrical field protocols of different manufactures are not comparable among one another and require their own validation for each indication. Importantly, randomized controlled trials and comparative data to current standard of care modalities, such as radiofrequency- or cryoballoon ablation, are still missing. This review focuses on the "pearls" and "pitfalls" of PFA, a technology that has the potential to become the future leading energy source for PVI and beyond.

  • We evaluated the effects of various factors (e.g., serum, inhibitors of protein synthesis, and cytoskeleton and protein kinases) on early PMA-induced THP-1 cell adhesion using an adhesion assay with Sulforhodamine B (SRB) staining, which was used to assess the proliferation of the attached cells. THP-1 cell adhesion to a plastic substrate was detected 1 hr after exposure to Phorbol 12-Myristate 13-Acetate (PMA) and peaked after 18 hr. At concentrations > 25 nM PMA, the level of adhesion did not change. Based on our preliminary results, we used 25 nM PMA and 5 hr of culture as standard assay conditions. Early PMA-induced cell adhesion was not affected by the presence of serum or PD 98059 in the culture medium, but was affected by the addition of PKC inhibitors and cycloheximide. In the presence of actin inhibitor with PMA, the cell adhesion increased when comparing with PMA treatment only. Thus, early PMA-induced adhesion of THP-1 cells does not require serum in the culture medium, MAP-kinase activation, or actin polymerization, but does require de novo protein synthesis and PKC activation. Our SRB-based cell adhesion assay may be used to screen other PKC inhibitors.

  • In this paper, the effect of soft handoff technique on CDMA cell coverage is analyzed in a lognormally shadowed channel, which uses the Hata propagation model, Also, the rate of increase for the cell coverage is analyzed by calculating the hard and soft handoff margin. When the outage probability is 0.02 and the standard deviation of the received signal is 2.5 dB in a lognormally shadowed channel, the transmit power of the mobile station which is located in the cell boundary is increased by the hard handoff margin of 5.13 dB and by the soft handoff margin of 3.68 dB, respectively. So, the rate of increase for the cell coverage is 1.39 in case of using the soft handoff technique. It is shown that if the (E$\_$b//N$\_$0/)$\_$req/ value is 7 dB, the cell coverage of the CDMA cellular system with soft handoff technique in city area is 3.33 km in case of the 850 MHz frequency and 1.36 km in case of the 1900 MHz frequency. Also, the accurate cell coverage with soft handoff technique is supported that could be serviced by the base-station in CDMA cellular system.

  • Tumor response to antineoplastic drugs is not always predictable. This is also true for bladder carcinoma, a highly recurrent neoplasia. Currently, the combination of cisplatin and gemcitabine is well accepted as a standard protocol for treating bladder carcinoma. However, in some cases, this treatment protocol causes harmful side effects. Therefore, we investigated the roles of the genes TP53, RASSF1A (a tumor suppressor gene) and hMLH1 (a gene involved in the mismatch repair pathway) in cell susceptibility to cisplatin/gemcitabine treatment. Two bladder transitional carcinoma cell (TCC) lines, RT4 (wild-type TP53) and 5637 (mutated TP53), were used in this study. First, we evaluated whether the genotoxic potential of cisplatin/gemcitabine was dependent on TP53 status. Then, we evaluated whether the two antineoplastic drugs modulated RASSF1A and hMLH1 expression in the two cell lines. Increased DNA damage was observed in both cell lines after treatment with cisplatin or gemcitabine and with the two drugs simultaneously, as depicted by the comet assay. A lack of RASSF1A expression and hypermethylation of its promoter were observed before and after treatment in both cell lines. On the other hand, hMLH1 downregulation, unrelated to methylation status, was observed in RT4 cells after treatment with cisplatin or with cisplatin and gemcitabine simultaneously (wild-type TP53); in 5637 cells, hMLH1 was upregulated only after treatment with gemcitabine. In conclusion, the three treatment protocols were genotoxic, independent of TP53 status. However, cisplatin was the most effective, causing the highest level of DNA damage in both wild-type and mutated TP53 cells. Gemcitabine was the least genotoxic agent in both cell lines. Furthermore, no relationship was observed between the amount of DNA damage and the level of hMLH1 and RASSF1A expression. Therefore, other alternative pathways might be involved in cisplatin and gemcitabine genotoxicity in these two bladder cancer cell lines.

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop a cell phone addiction scale for Korean parents of young children, and to evaluate the reliability and validity of the developed scale. Methods: The scale was developed through construction of a conceptual framework, generation of initial items, verification of content validity, selection of secondary items, preliminary study, and extraction of final items. Participants were 465 parents and 178 children. Data were analyzed using item analysis, factor analysis, criterion related validity, internal consistency, and split-half reliability. Results: Twenty items were categorized into three factors explaining 60.3% of total variance. Factors were named as withdrawal - 4 items, loss of control - 9 items, and persistence - 7 items. Scores for the scale were significantly correlated with self-control, impulsiveness, cell phone use, and cell phone addiction of children as measured by a scale for Korean children. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the 20 items was .94, and Guttman coefficient was .87. Scale scores identified children as high risk users, at risk users, or average users by standard scores. Conclusion: The results suggest that the cell phone addiction scale for Korean parents is a reliable and valid instrument to measure cell phone addiction in young children.
