Part-I of this two-part paper develops an optimal algorithm for transient stability control to coordinate the preventive actions and emergency actions for a subset of contingencies with an identical unstable mode. In this portion, several subsets of contingencies having dissimilar unstable modes are dealt with. Preventive actions benefiting a subset of contingencies may go against the stability of others, thus coordination among the optimal schemes for individual subsets is necessary. The coordination can be achieved by replacing some preventive actions with contingency-specified emergency actions. It is formulated as a classical model of economic dispatch with stability constraints and stability control costs. Such an optimal algorithm is proposed based on the algorithm in Part-I of the paper and is verified by simulations on a Chinese power system.
Artificial neural network based pattern recognition method is one of the most probable candidate for on-line power system transient stability analysis. Especially, Kohonen layer is an adequate neural network for the purpose. Each node of Kehonen layer competes on the basis of which of them has its clustering center closest to an input vector. This paper discusses Kohonen's LVQ(Learning Victor Quantization) and points out a defection of the algorithm when applied to the transient stability analysis. Only the clustering centers located near the decision boundary of the stability region is needed for the stability criterion and the centers far from the decision boundary are redundant. This paper presents a new algorithm ratted boundary searching algorithm II which assigns only the points that are near the boundary in an input space to nodes or Kohonen layer as their clustering centers. This algorithm is demonstrated with satisfaction using 4-generator 6-bus sample power system.
In this paper, a method for optimal design of PID controller using the immune algorithm(IA) has been proposed to improve the stability of A.C.-D.C. power system. The process of this study is composed of formulation of basic controls on HVDC transmission system, mathematical model preparation for stability analysis, and supplementary signal control by an optimal PID controller using the IA. The dynamic property was verified through computer simulations regarding transient stability.
In this paper, a methodology for optimal design of PID controller using the modified genetic algorithm has been proposed to improve the transient stability at system fault in HVDC transmission system, mathematical model preparation for stability analysis, and supplementary signal control by an optimal PID controller using the modified genetic algorithm(MGA). The propriety was verified through computer simulations regarding transient stability. It means that the application of MGA-PID controller in HVDC transmission system can contribute the propriety to the improvement of the transient stability in HVDC transmission system and the design of MGA-PID controller has been proved indispensible when applied to HVDC transmission system.

Autoreclosing techniques have been used in power systems to maintain system stability and continuity of supply. Environmental and economical issues have driven significant increases in the development of distributed generation (DG). DG connected to distribution systems, however, may impose negative influences with respect to power quality, protection, and stability, because DG can cause some challenges to protection, especially to reclosing. For this reason, in order to improve the reliability and safety of the distribution system, the rules and guidelines suggest that the DG system needs to be rapidly disconnected from the system before reclosing. We present, in this paper, an adaptive reclosing algorithm considering the DG. The algorithm consists of an angle oscillation's judgment, the emergency extended equal-area criterion (EEEAC), the calculation of an optimal reclosing time, and a reconnection algorithm. Our simulation results for three different DG technologies with Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) indicate that we can maintain transient stability while the DG is protected against disturbances.

Based on the stability margin provided by the EEAC, the unstable contingencies can be classified into sets according to their unstable modes. This two-part paper develops a globally optimal algorithm for transient stability control to coordinate preventive actions and emergency actions. In the first part, an algorithm is proposed for a set of contingencies having identical unstable modes. Instead of iterations between discrete emergency actions and continuous preventive actions, the algorithm straightforwardly searches for a globally optimal solution. The procedure includes assessing a set of insufficient emergency schemes identified by the EEAC; calculating the related preventive actions needed for stabilizing the system; and selecting the scheme with the minimum overall costs. Simulations on a Chinese power system highlight its excellent performance. The positive results obtained are explained by analogizing settlements for 0-1 knapsack problems using the multi-points greedy algorithm.
The paper presents a generalized optimal active control algorithm for earthquake-resistant structures. The study included the weighting matrix configuration, stability, and time-delays for achieving control effectiveness and optimum solution. The sensitivity of various time-delays in the optimal solution is investigated for which the stability regions are determined. A simplified method for reducing the influence of time-delay on dynamic response is proposed. Numerical examples illustrate that the proposed optimal control algorithm is advantageous over others currently in vogue. Its feedback control law is independent of the time increment, and its weighting matrix can be flexibly selected and adjusted at any time during the operation of the control system. The examples also show that the weighting matrix based on pole placement approach is superior to other weighting matrix configurations for its self-adjustable control effectiveness. Using the time-delay correction method can significantly reduce the influence of time-delays on both structural response and required control force.
This paper presents a lateral stability control for rear wheel drive (RWD) vehicles using electronic limited slip differentials (eLSD). The proposed eLSD controller is designed to increase the understeer characteristic by transferring torque from the outside to inside wheel. The proposed algorithm is devised to improve the lateral responses at the steady state and transient cornering. In the steady state response, the proposed algorithm can extend the region of linear cornering response and can increase the maximum limit of available lateral acceleration. In the transient response, the proposed controller can reduce the yaw rate overshoot by increasing the understeer characteristic. The proposed algorithm has been investigated via computer simulations. In the simulation results, the performance of the proposed controller is compared with uncontrolled cases. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the vehicle lateral stability and handling performance.
The radius and coordinate of sliding circle are taken as searching variables in slope stability analysis. Genetic algorithm is applied for searching for critical factor of safety. In order to search for critical factor of safety in slope stability analysis efficiently and in a robust manner, some improvements for simple genetic algorithm are proposed. Taking the advantages of efficiency of neighbor-search of the simulated annealing and the robustness of genetic algorithm, a hybrid optimization method is presented. The numerical computation shows that the procedure can determine the minimal factor of safety and be applied to slopes with any geometry, layering, pore pressure and external load distribution. The comparisons demonstrate that the genetic algorithm provides a same solution when compared with elasto-plastic finite element program.
