  • In this paper, we propose a generalized index independent stability condition for a descriptor systemwithout any transformations of system matrices. First, the generalized Lyapunov equation with a specific right-handed matrix form is considered. Furthermore, the existence theorem and the necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotically stable descriptor systems are presented. Finally, some suitable examples are used to show the validity of the proposed method.

  • Transient stability analysis is concerned with a power system's response to unwanted disturbance. Recently, direct method which utilize the stable region of stable equilibrium point is used to analyze transient stability This paper focuses on the controlling UEP method using the fractal behaviours. In the controlling UEP method, many algorithms are used to find controlling UEP However, the existence of fractal region gives difficulty in finding the controlling UEP. So, this paper observes the fractal feature arid introduce the fractal index to explain how much the fractal region occupies in the entire space. Using an improved algorithm from the view point of fractal index, we are going to find the controlling UEP.

  • In this paper, a controller design method is proposed for haptic interface considering transparency and robust stability. For this, a performance index for the transparency as performance measure is defined in the points of impedance matching and the optimal solution which is minimizing the performance index is obtained by solving H2 optimal problem. In haptic interface, the modeling uncertainties can be restricted to that of haptic device. To implement the robust stabilizing haptic controller to the uncertainties of haptic device, a robust stable condition using H$\infty$ norm from small gain theorem is proposed. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed haptic controller design scheme, numerical examples and experimental results are illustrated for virtual wall consisting of stiffness and damping factor.

  • In this paper there are different methods used to study the voltage stability, such as the P-V curve method. Jacobian method and the voltage collapse proximity indicator(L-index) method. The P-V curve method is to check operating margin from the maximum operating point. The Jacobian method is to check the eigenvalue or the minimum singular value of the load flow Jacobian matrix. If the power system is unstable, one of the eigenvalues, at least, has crossed the imaginary axis. The L-index method is to quantify how to close a particular operating point. This paper describes these methods to select the best location of FACTS and demonstrate the effectiveness of STATCOM of voltage stability on the IEEE 9-bus system.

  • Slope stability is affected by various factors. For safety management of slopes, monitoring systems have been widely constructed along railway lines. The representative data from the systems are variations of ground profile such like ground water level and pore water pressure etc. and direct displacement measured by ground clinometer and tension wire sensor. Slopes are mainly effected by rainfall and rainfall causes the decrease of factor of safety(FOS). Because FOS varies linearly by the variation of ground water level and pore pressure, it has a weak point that could not define the time and proper warning sign to secure the safety of the train. In this study, alternative of FOS such as reliability index and probability of failure is applied to slope stability analysis introducing the reliability concept. FOS, reliability index, probability of failure and velocity of probability of failure of the slopes by variation of ground water level are investigated for setting up the specification of safety management of slopes. By executing case study of a slope(ILLO-IMSUNGLI), it is showed to be applied to specification of safety management.

  • The major focus of this study is to evaluate a newly developed stream naturalness index system 'Habitat-riparian Indexing System (HIS).' There have been many studies that have assessed stream naturalness in order to provide information required for restoration. The results of these studies were enough for the purpose of the studies; however, the methodologies were limited especially with respect to rapid measurement and the representation of ecological habitats. Therefore, we derived crucial variables from a popularly utilized method and merged them with other criteria obtained from overseas approaches, resulting in the development of the HIS method. The stability of HIS was evaluated by comparing the results with the Stream Naturalness Index (SNI) of Cho (1997). We monitored 100 stream sites in the Nakdong River system using the two different methods for two sampling periods (spring and autumn), and the results were compared using statistical analyses. The determination coefficients between the index values from two methods were c.a. 0.6 for both seasons, and statistics revealed that HIS had a relatively higher stability, providing index values for stream environments. The results of this work suggest a possibility of the utility of HIS for other stream habitats.

  • On the study of surface activity in excized lung extracts of various pulmonary diseases, following facts were concluded. 1]The minimum surface tension measured in lung extracts of tuberculous tissue surrounding cavitary lesion was 26.3dyne/cm and its stability index was 0.53. 2]Macroscopically almost normal lung tissue at a distance of tuberculous lesion in same lobe revealed 21.3 dyne/cm of minimum surface tension in extracts and its stability index showed 0.66. This low surface activity may be due to the chronic pneumonitis microscopically. 3] In the atelectatic lung which had been collapsed by chronic empyema the extracts revealed much higher minimum surface tension in 27.3 dyne/cm and its stabillry index revealed the least value of 0.47 without correlation of duration of disease. This suggests that the longstanding collapsed lung may be soon collapsed even after mechanical full expansion because of lack of surfactant.

  • Fluorinated polymaleimides with high thermal stability and low optical absorption loss in the optical communication wavelength of $1.55{\mu}m$ were investigated for application in low-loss waveguide materials. The fluorinated polymaleimides were prepared from two monomers phenylmaleimide (H-PMI) and pentafluorophenylmaleimide (F-PMI). All synthesized copolymers had high thermal stability (decomposition temperature $(T_d)=380-430^{\circ}C$). The refractive index of the copolymers could be tuned from 1.4969 to 1.5950 in the TE mode and from 1.4993 to 1.5932 for the TM mode at 632.8 nm by copolymerizing different weight ratios of H-PMI and F-PMI. The refractive index of the copolymers decreased with increasing F-PMI content. In addition, when the amount of F-PMI was increased, optical loss and absorption loss at 632.8 nm and 1550 nm, respectively, decreased.

  • This paper deals with the gait optimization of via points on biped robot. ZMP(Zero Moment point) is the most important index in a biped robot's dynamic walking stability. To stable walking of a biped robot, leg's trajectory and a desired ZMP trajectory is required, balancing motion is solved by FDM(Finite Difference Method). In this paper, optimal index is defined to dynamically stable walking of a biped robot, and genetic algorithm is applied to optimize gait trajectory and balancing motion of a biped robot. By genetic algorithm, the index of walking parameter is efficiently optimized, and dynamic walking stability is verified by ZMP verification equation. Genetic algorithm is only applied to balancing motion, and is totally applied to whole trajectory. All of the suggested motions of biped robot are investigated by simulations and verified through the real implementation.

  • Background: The foot is a complex body structure that plays an important role in static and dynamic situations. Previous studies have reported that altered foot posture might affect knee joint strength and postural stability, however their relationship still remains unclear. Objects: The purpose of this study was to identify whether pronated foot posture has an influence on knee isokinetic strength and static and dynamic postural stability. Methods: Forty healthy young males aged 18 to 26 years were included. Foot posture was evaluated using the Foot Posture Index-6 (FPI-6), and the subjects were divided into two groups according to their FPI-6 scores: a neutral foot group (n = 20, FPI-6 score 0 to +5) and a pronated foot group (n = 20, FPI-6 score +6 or more). Biodex Systems 3 isokinetic dynamometer was used to evaluate knee isokinetic strength and hamstring to quadriceps ratio at three angular velocities: 60°/sec, 90°/sec, and 180°/sec. The static and dynamic postural stability in a single-leg stance under the eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions were measured with a Biodex Balance System. Results: There were no significant differences between the groups in knee isokinetic strength and static postural stability (p > 0.05), but there was a significant difference in the medial-lateral stability index (MLSI) for dynamic postural stability under the eyes-closed condition (p = 0.022). The FPI-6 scores correlated significantly only with the dynamic overall stability index (OSI) and the MLSI (OSI: R = 0.344, p = 0.030; MLSI: R = 0.409, p = 0.009) under the eyesclosed condition. Conclusion: Participants with pronated foot had poorer medial-lateral dynamic stability under an eyes-closed condition than those without, and FPI-6 scores were moderately positively correlated with dynamic OSI and dynamic MLSI under the eyes-closed condition. These results suggest that pronated foot posture could induce a change in postural stability, but not in knee isokinetic strength.
