  • Background : Lung cancer is one of the most common malignancy in the world. Types of lung cancer are Non small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. Subtypes of Non small cell lung cancer are adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and large cell carcinoma. Knowing the type of lung cancer is important in determining both treatment and prognosis. Recently, due to newly developed anti-cancer drugs, squamous cell carcinoma has relatively poor prognosis than non-squamous cell carcinoma. Case : We report a squamous cell lung cancer case treated with allergen removed Rhus verniciflua Stokes (aRVS) extract. The patients initially diagnosed stage squamous cell lung carcinoma, but she refused recommended operation. She initiated aRVS extract monotherapy in October. 2006. The follow up Computed tomography in March. 2007, she diagnosed stable disease of tumor response on aRVS treatment. However, this case was lost to follow up for 6 months while she was treated with tomotherapy. In October 2007, she came back to our cancer center after diagnosed stage IV metastasized lung to lung, and aRVS monotherapy was restarted. She had survived 2 years after metastasis of squamous cell lung carcinoma. Conclusion : Allergen removed Rhus verniciflua Stokes(aRVS) sucessfully prolonged overall survival of a squamous cell lung cancer patient.

  • Knowledge of molecular pathogenesis of non-small cell lung cancer has increased remarkably and changed the principles of treatment, especially during the past decade. These advancements have been limited mainly to adenocarcinoma of the lung. Recently, genetic alterations in squamous cell lung cancer (SQCLC) have been detailed and positive results of clinical trials using agents targeting these changes have indicated the potential for improved treatment outcomes for SQCLC.

  • Primary lung cancer is unusual in children; the squamous cell variant is extremely rare. Lung cancer is classified by histologic types into small-cell lung cancer, non-small cell lung caner, carcinoid, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and adenoid cystic carcinoma. Furthermore, non-small cell lung cancer is subclassified into adenocarcinoma, large-cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. The incidence of lung cancer is influenced by smoking, especially in squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. The present treatments for these tumors are chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgical resection depending on their histologic types or stages, but yield very poor survival rates. In this article, we report a case of basaloid squamous cell lung carcinoma in an 11-year-old boy who had symptoms of both leg weakness and back pain radiating to both legs. We confirmed the primary lung carcinoma cells by percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy. The metastatic carcinoma cells were identified at the bone marrow and lumbar spine. We treated with a combination chemotherapy and radiation therapy. However, he expired 4 months after the onset of disease.

  • The synchronous primary lung cancer is very rare cancer, proportion of synchronous lung cancer is about 1∼2% of total lung cancer, When pathologic type is same, preoperative diagnosis is very difficult and it may be misdiagnosed as lung to lung metastasis. We have experienced synchronous primary lung cancer of heterogenous squamous cell carcinoma.

  • Objectives: This study employed proteomic profiling to identify specific tumor markers that might improve early diagnosis of lung squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: Serum samples were isolated from 30 patients with stage I lung squamous cell carcinoma and 30 age-and gender-matched healthy controls, and proteomic profiles were obtained by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry. Results: Three highly expressed potential tumor markers were identified in the sera of stage I lung squamous cell carcinoma patients, with molecular weights of 3261.69, 3192.07, and 2556.92 Da. One protein peak with molecular weight 3261.69 Da was chosen as the candidate biomarker and identified as a fibrinogen alpha chain through a search of the IPI, NCBI or SWISS-PROT protein databases. Conclusion: As a potential tumor biomarker, fibrinogen alpha chain may be applicable for the early diagnosis and prognosis of lung squamous cell carcinoma patients.

  • Three cases of double primary lung cancer occured synchronously are reported with brief review of literature. The incidence of multiple primary lung cancer relatively rare but may become increasingly prevalent as early detection techinque and cancer therapy has improved. The patients were a 67, 69, and 65-year-old men with doulbe primary lung cancer of different cell type or same cell type with other bronchus origin (squamous cell+small cell, squamous cell+squamous cell, squamous cell+bronchioloaveolar cell) were identified with flexible bronchofiberoscopic biopsies. More careful diagnostic evaluation and management are thought to be necessary.

  • Spontaneous Pneumothorax as a complication of lung cancer is rare, as seen from the literature, comprising only 1.13 per cent of all pneumothoraces. All histologic types of lung cancer have been reported principally squamous cell carcinoma probably because of its relatively higher incidence. Beside the fact that it occurs in the same high risk population [Smokers, chronic bronchitis and those with emphysema], pneumothorax may reveal a cancer. Recently, we observed three cases of lung cancer with spontaneous pneumothorax, the one was squamous cell carcinoma and the others were adenocarcinoma. Three cases of spontaneous pneumothoraces occurred as a complication of neoplastic disease.

  • Background: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in the world. Many factors can protect against or facilitate its development. A TNF family member TRAIL, has a complex physiological role beyond that of merely activating the apoptotic pathway in cancer cells. Vitamin D is converted to its active form locally in the lung, and is also thought to play an important role in lung health. Our goal was to investigate the possible clinical significance of serum sTRAIL and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) levels in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Materials and Methods: Totals of 18 consecutive adenocarcinoma and 22 squamous cell carcinoma patients with stage-IV non-small cell lung cancer referred to our institute were included in this study. There were 12 men and 6 women, with ages ranging from 38 to 97 (mean 60.5) years with adenocarcinoma, and 20 men and 2 women, with ages ranging from 46 to 80 (mean 65) years with squamous cell carcinoma. Serum levels of sTRAIL and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) were measured in all samples at the time of diagnosis. Results: sTRAIL levels in NSCLC patients were higher than in the control group. Although there was no correlation between patient survival and sTRAIL levels, the highest sTRAIL levels were correlated with age and cigarette smoking in the adenocarcinoma patients. sTRAIL level in healthy individuals were correlated with serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3). Conclusions: Serum sTRAIL concentrations were increased in NSCLC patients, and correlated with age and smoking history, but not with overall survival.

  • Background: To investigate the related risk factors of postoperative nosocomial pneumonia (POP) in patients withI-IIIa lung cancer. Methods: Medical records of 511 patients who underwent resection for lung cancer between January 2012 to December 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Risk factors of postoperative pneumonia were identified and evaluated by univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: The incidence of postoperative pneumonia in these lung cancer patients was 2.9% (15 cases). Compared with 496 patients who had no pneumonia infection after operation, older age (>60), histopathological type of squamous cell carcinoma and longer surgery time (>3h) were significant risk factors by univariate analysis. Other potential risk factors such as alcohol consumption, history of smoking, hypersensitivity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and so on were not showed such significance in this study. Further, the multivariate analysis revealed that old age (>60 years) (OR 5.813, p=0.018) and histopathological type of squamous cell carcinoma (OR 5.831, p<0.001) were also statistically significant independent risk factors for postoperative pneumonia. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that being old aged (>60 years) and having squamous cell carcinoma histopathological type might be important factors in determining the risk of postoperative pneumonia in lung cancer patients after surgery.
