The Effect of Compressive Residual Stresses of Two-stage Shot Peening for Fatigue Strength of Spring Steel

  • Recently the steel parts used in automobiles are required to be used under high stress more than ever before due to the need of keeping the weight down. To achieve this requirement of the high strength steel, it must be necessary to decrease inclusion contents and surface defects as like decarburization, surface roughness etc. In this study, the surface conditions are measured to know the influence on fatigue properties by two cases of two-stage shot peening and single-stage shot peening. And for this study, three kinds of spring steel (JISG408l-SUP7, SAE 9254 and DIN 50CrV4) are shaped. This study shows the outstanding improvement of fatigue properties at the case of two-stage shot peening in the rotating bending fatigue test and it results from (1) decreasing the surface roughness (2) unchanging the surface hardness (3) increasing the compressive residual stress. Moreover, results also show fatigue failures originated at the inclusion near the surface, and this inclusion type is turned out to be an alumina of high hardness.

  • Inelastic model of Second Jindo Bridge is investigated to perform nonlinear dynamic analyses with various earthquake ground motions. The modal analysis is performed to obtain dynamic characteristics of the bridge and verify the model. It proves that the model has an appropriate dynamic characteristic and its natural frequency is relatively low. Four ground motions are chosen for time history dynamic analyses; El Centro, Kobe, Taft, and Mexico earthquake. Each ground motion multiplied by specified factors to investigate damages of the structure. The analyses prove that responses of the bridge depend on the duration time and the frequency characteristics of ground motion, not only peak acceleration. Static push-over analysis of steel pylon shows that the dynamic analysis over-estimates the seismic behavior of steel pylon definitely. Nonlinear spring hinge model is suggest to improve the shortage of the inelastic model could not deliberate local buckling damage. According to the time history analysis of nonlinear spring hinge model, it is proved that the inelastic beam element analysis overestimate the seismic capacity of steel pylon unquestionably with a large amount of errors.

Analytical investigation of thin steel plate shear walls with screwed infill plate

  • A behavior model for screw connections is developed to provide a better representation of the nonlinear response of thin steel plate shear walls (TSPSWs) with infill plates attached to the boundary frame members via self-drilling screws. This analytical representation is based on the load-bearing deformation relationship between the infill plate and the screw threads. The model can be easily implemented in strip models of TSPSWs where the tension field action of the infill plates is represented by a series of parallel discrete tension-only strips. Previously reported experimental results from tests of two different TSPSWs are used to provide experimental validation of the modeling approach. The beam-to-column connection behavior was also included in the analyses using a four parameter rotational spring model that was calibrated to a test of an identical frame as used for the TSPSW specimens but without the infill plates. The complete TSPSW models consisting of strips representing the infill plates, zero length elements representing the load-bearing deformation response of the screw connection at each end of the strips and the four parameter spring model at each beam-to-column connection are shown to have good agreement with the experimental results. The resulting models should enable design and analysis of TSPSWs for both new construction and retrofit of existing buildings.

This study shows the outstanding improvement of fatigue properties at the case of two-stage shot peening in the rotary bending fatigue test and this is assumed to be from (1) on low stress condition, the single stage shot peening is not affected by nonmetallic inclusion under metal. (2) it is possible that the two-stage shot peening increases the fatigue life and the high stress, but, that is affected by nonmetallic inclusion under metal. (3) so far, beeasily 50CrV4 have made high stress. But, results also show fatigue failures originated at inclusion near surface, and this inclusion type is turned out to be a alumina of high hardness.

  • The biggest topics in the automobile industry are light weightening and fuel efficiency improvement. There's a lot of research going on. It is focused on light weight materials. Light weight material is seen as the best way to reduce fuel consumption and to solve the problem of environmental pollution and resource depletion. For the light weight materials, new materials such as aluminum, magnesium, and carbon-hardening materials can be found. Research on the joining techniques of dual materials, improvement of material properties by improving the method of manufacture of existing materials, and studies on ultra-high strength steel sheets are expected to take up the most weight in lightweight materials. As the strength of the ultra-high strength steel sheets increases during forming, it is difficult to obtain dimensional precision due to the increase in elastic restoring force compared to mild or high strength steel sheets. Spring back is known to be affected by a number of factors due to poor plastic molding, and can be divided into the effects of the material spraying and the process. The study on the plasticitic variables were studied as plasticitic factors that can be controlled by a part company. Tensile testing of ultra-high strength materials was conducted to derive properties for plasticitic analysis and to analyze spring back with two factors controlling the height of the bead and blank holding force by adding tensile force and controlling the flow rate.

  • This paper presents full scale model tests on the various types of model piles carried out to estimate the behavior of laterally loaded steel-concrete composite piles. Subgrade-reaction spring system was developed to simulate the reaction of ground in laboratory condition. In addition, lateral behavior of piles under working load condition was estimated using composite loading system, which is available for independent loading in vertical and horizontal direction. Steel-concrete composite piles showed higher efficiency in lateral resistance rather than drilled shaft made of reinforced concrete. The lateral resistance of composite pile was larger than the summation of steel pile and concrete pile due to the composite effect by steel casing. The effect of shear key or strength of concrete on the behavior of composite pile was examined. The substitution of reinforcing bar by steel casing was also investigated.

  • Vehicle weight reduction is a known strategy to improve fuel efficiency and strengthen exhaust gas regulation. The use of high strength steel can satisfy safety, efficiency, emission, manufacturability, durability, and cost requirements. However, springback of high strength steel results in undesired shape defects. Springback is one of the most important issues of high strength steel for many applications in an automobile. Servo press has various capabilities to improve defects, process conditions, and productivity problems when forming a high strength steel. Especially, servo press can be set to function with variable slide motion in a single operation. In this study, the effect of servo press slide motion on 980MPa high strength steel was investigated through U-bending test.
