A bunker bed is a type of furniture that efficiently utilizes a narrow indoor space by having a high bed and using the empty space below as a living and storage space. The demand for multi-purpose furniture is increasing due to the recent increase in single-person households and wide-spread shared accommodation. According to the consumer research, one of the major drawbacks of a bunker bed was to get on and off the bed through a ladder or stairs. In order to overcome these problems, it was confirmed that the height adjustment function that can easily adjust the minimum and maximum heights of the bed was necessary. In this study, a height adjustable bunker bed was designed by using a gas spring that generates a repulsive force by the compressed gas inside. The design process consisted of the following three steps: Firstly, the hysteresis characteristics due to a friction and spring constant of a commercial gas spring were confirmed by measuring the repulsive force vs. compressed displacement. Secondly, requirements of the vertical lifting force exerted on the bed against gravity force were derived. Finally, the height-adjustable bed using the four-bar link mechanism was designed with 4 parameters so that the bed weight of 60-70 kgf could be adjusted to 800 mm in height by an affordable initial operation force. The performance was verified through prototype production and the results of vertical displacement and force to move were nearly the same as designed. In addition, an electrically operated height-adjustable bed was also designed with linear actuators and the performance was proved with the prototype.
To reduce the cost and the time of transport in Eurasian railroad networks such as TKR(Trans-Korea Railway), TCR(Trans-China Railway) and TSR(Trans-Siberia Railway) owing to the problem of different track gauges (narrow/standard/broad gauge), it is important to develop the gauge - adjustable wheelset system to adapt easily to these gauges. Moreover, this system accomplishes periodically a conversion operation from the gauge variable segment between different gauge. Gauge adjustable compression coil spring during conversion process accomplishes repetitively a central role for operation mechanism between flange and locking part. Therefore, to assure the safety of the gauge-adjustment wheelset system, it is necessary to stress analysis of the optimized spring in the system. In this study, it was performed to optimal design of the spring for stress analysis by using the genetic algorithm.
Sliding wear tests have been performed to evaluate the effect of normal load decrease on the wear depth of nuclear fuel rods in room temperature air. The objectives of this study are to quantitatively evaluate the supporting ability of spacer grid springs, to estimate the wear depth by using the contacting force decrease and to compare the wear behavior with increasing test cycles (up to $10^7$) at each spring condition. The result showed that the contacting load decrease depends on the spring shape and the applied slip amplitude. The estimated wear depth is smaller when compared with measured wear depth. Based on the test results, the wear mechanism, the role of wear debris layer and the spring shape effect were discussed.
Springback is one of factors affecting precision in metal forming. Its effect is particularly prominent in bending process. In this study, bending and forging process are used in order to manufacture a micro spring with two bending region from $60{\mu}m$ diameter wire. Springback in the process lowers the precision of the micro spring. Overbending for springback compensation has wide usage in a general way. However, this method requires repeated modifications of press dies until the tolerance is allowable, which causes that production cost and time increase. In this paper, we analyzed the mechanism of springback in the forming process of the micro spring using finite element method. In addition, a simple method to control springback without modifying dies was proposed by performing numerical analysis with various parameters.
In this paper, an exact mathematical model is derived for an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve actuator driven by an H-bridge converter. Particularly, a spring torque model of the EGR valve is proposed. The spring torque model is proposed by converting spring force and Coulomb frictional force in linear motion into a rotational torque. Moreover, a mechanical end-stop model was proposed by the valve mechanism. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified by comparing the experimental results with the simulated results.
In this paper, fretting wear tests were conducted in air at room temperature (RT) and in water at high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) environment to analyze the wear characteristic. As for the supporting condition between the tube and spring/dimple, the gap of 0.2 mm in air at RT and the normal force of 10 N and the slip of $50\;{\mu}\;m$ in water at HTHP were applied. Four different shapes of spring/dimple specimen (type A, B, C, D) were used. Detail eaxamination of wear scar was also performed using SEM micrographs. As a result, in the case of the spring of truncated wedge, severer wear occurs than the others. Protrusion part was found and larger in air at RT. It is thought that the difference in the wear volume and the protrusion is caused by the different wear mechanism corresponding to the different environment.
Dynamic Load/unload (L/UL) mechanism is an alternative to the contact start stop (CSS) technology which eliminates stiction and wear failure modes associated with CSS. Other benefits of L/UL include increased areal density due to smooth disk surfaces, thinner overcoats, and lower head flying height Improved shock resistance due to elimination of head slap, and reduced power consumption. Inertia latch mechanism becomes important for mobile disk drives because of non operating shock performance. Various types of latch designs have been introduced in hard disk drives to limit a rotary actuator from sudden uncontrolled motion. In this paper, a single spring inertia latch is introduced for a small form optical disk drive, which uses a rotary actuator for moving an optical pick-up. A new small inertia latch with single spring is designed to ensure both feasible and small size. The shock performance of the new inertia latch is experimentally verified.
In this study, we establish hyper-elastic haptic feedback in a virtual environment using finite element analysis techniques and develop a Force Torque (FT) sensor utilization method for application in tele-operation environments. In general, regarding haptic feedback data, in a tele-operation environment, the user is provided with feedback according to the measured force data when the model is inserted through an FT sensor. Conversely, in a virtual environment, the press-fitting model can be expressed through the spring-damper system rather than an FT sensor to provide feedback. However, unlike rigid and the elastic bodies, the hyper-elastic body represented by a spring-damper system in a virtual environment is a simple impedance model using stiffness and damping coefficients; it is limited in terms of providing actual feedback. Thus, in this study, haptic feedback was implemented using the data obtained from POD-RBF analysis results during hyper-elastic press-fitting experiments. The haptic feedback mechanism developed in this study was verified by comparing the FT sensor feedback data measured and calculated through hyper-elastic press-fitting experiments with spring-damper feedback data. Subsequently, the POD-RBF analysis feedback was compared and evaluated against the feedback mechanism of each environment through the test subject, and the similarities between the POD-RBF analysis feedback and FT sensor data feedback were verified.
Changes in the alcohol-soluble free amino acids during germination of a spring grain, Wanju and two winter grains, Sedohadaka and Nonsankwa No.1-6 which are differing in their degree of spring (winter) habits, were investigated by thin layer chromatography. The results obtained are as follows. 1. Throughout the germination period, 25 ninhydrin positive components; 22 amino acids including two amides and 3 unknown spots were detected. It is interesting to note that identification of histidine was confined to Wanju and Sedohadaka but Nonsankwa No.1-6, which has the lower degree of spring habit. 2. Except the quiescent seeds, the major components were generally composed of the acidic and neutral amino acids together with glutamine and asparagine. 3. Proline was contained in higher quantity except from the stage of quiescent seeds, but the outstanding difference among the varieties was not recognized. Whether this component is related to the mechanism of spring habit in barley or not is a problem to be studied more. 4. In all the varieties, most of the changes in amino acid levels during germination were usually in the same direction and of the same pattern under the temperature controlled not to be varnalized. In view of the results above, the changes in the amino acid levels seem to be more affected by the changes of growing circumstances and the subsequent metabolic activities of certain enzymes than by the characteristics of varieties themselves.
A variable release torque-based compliance spring-clutch (VCSC) is presented. VCSC is a safe joint to reduce the impact of collisions between humans and robots. It is composed of four functional plates, balls, springs to make some functions in compliant movement, release mechanism, gravity compensation during its work. Also, it can estimate torque applied to a joint by using distance sensor and parameters of cam profile. The measured variable torque of prototype is 4.3~7.6 Nm and release torque is 4.3 Nm. In our future studies, a calibration for torque estimation will be conducted.
