  • The purpose of this study is to develop an improved measuring system, which allows for effectively measure spring clamping forces. This system consists of eight or twelve measuring points in order to acquire the clamping force distribution of the whole range of spring clamp. Each measuring point consists of load cells equipped with 4 strain gauges. Using different bearings, we calibrate the roundness of the measuring points. For quality control and database construction, a software system is established. furthermore, uncertainty is calculated to validate the confidence of this system. Various experiments confirm the effectiveness of this measuring system.

  • A new technique is proposed for bridge structural damage detection based on spatial wavelet analysis of the time history obtained from vehicle body moving over the bridge, which is different from traditional detection techniques based on the bridge response. A simply-supported Bernoulli-Euler beam subjected to a moving spring-mass unit is established, with the crack in the beam simulated by modeling the cracked section as a rotational spring connecting two undamaged beam segments, and the equations of motion for the system is derived. By using the transfer matrix method, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the cracked beam are determined. The responses of the beam and the moving spring-mass unit are obtained by modal decomposition theory. The continuous wavelet transform is calculated on the displacement time histories of the sprung-mass. The case study result shows that the damage location can be accurately determined and the method is effective.

  • An analytical study about dynamic behavior of center pivot rocker arm type valve train system equipped with roller of diesel engine is developed. At first, a mathematical model for the dynamic analysis has been set up using the lumped parameter method. In that model, valve spring is divided as some mass elemehts so as to simulate spring surging, Then, how the design parameters, such as valve mass, rocker arm inertia, valve spring stiffness, and initial load on valve spring, affect valve dynamic behavior especially in the valve close area is scrutinized.

  • It is shown that the rate of wear can be related to 'index of wear intensity' using a leaf-spring in the disc on disk on wear tests. Since both upper and lower specimens have used the same hardness values, equivalent hardness of 'the index of wear intensity' used the mean hardness value of specimens. This index is derived from the external variables of load, sliding speed and the hardness of the sliding pairs. The wear behavior as the hardness of the sliding elements on the dry wear has been investigated using a disc on disc configuration. The materials of the specimens are used as ten kinds along their hardness. Using experimental data, we figured the relationship between wear rate and index of wear intensity. A newly wear equation had been derived the result using a leaf-spring in disc on disc wear system.

  • In this study, the properties of coil spring made by Cu-Zn-Al and B added shape memory alloys are investigated. The measurement of recovery displacement and energy with increasing weight, and thermocycling properties have been studied using displacement measuring device. Transformation temperature and phase change by thermocycling have been also investigated by DSC and X-ray diffractometer. Grain size of the alloy is refined from 1.2mm to $400{\mu}m$ by 0.06wt% of B addition. The maximum recovery energy of the coil spring for B added alloy is larger than that of no B added alloy, it is because of grain refinement. And shape memory ability of the coil spring by thermocycling decrease with increasing thermocycling after thermocycle under load. The degradation of shape memory properties of coil spring by thermocycling is improved by B addition.

  • In this paper, back pressure forging processes of which back pressures are exerted by mechanical forces including spring reaction are simulated by three-dimensional finite element method. The basic three-dimensional approach extended from two-dimensional approach is accounted for. An axisymmetric backward and forward extrusion process having a back pressing die, which is exposed to oscillation of forming load due to variation of reduction ratios with stroke and its related frequent variation of major deforming region, is simulated by both two and three dimensional approaches to justify the presented approach by their comparison. A three-dimensional forging process having a back pressing die attached to the punch by a mechanical spring is simulated and the results are investigated to reveal accuracy of the presented approach.

  • This paper presents the load modeling process and bus load models for KEPCO power system. At first, load devices commonly used in KEPCO power systems were selected, and tested for measuring the voltage and frequency sensitivity of active and reactive power. From this test, about 40 voltage and frequency dependent load models have been obtained. The bus load composition rate for KEPCO power system has been determined using the various recent surveys and papers in order to develop the load model for a power system bus. To verify the accuracy of developed bus load models, the field test for measuring active and reactive power according to artificial variation of the bus voltage was performed at 8 substations for spring summer, autumn, winter cases. With data of this seasonal field test, more reliable bus load models for KEPCO power systems were developed.

  • The safety and the durability of the shock absorber as an automotive chassis part under the fatigue load can be predicted in this study. The fatigue life becomes constant from 0.5 to 0.75 at the change of load which is the amplitude load divided by average load. But its life is sharply decreased at the change of load from 0.75 to 1.5. The influence of fatigue life according to the change of load can be predicted by these results. As the value of maximum damage is 9.61 at the middle part of upper side on shock absorber under the concentrated load, there is the greatest possibility of destruction at this part. The spring of shock absorber becomes nearly the state of pure shear and the uniaxial or biaxial stress exists at the rest part of it under the fatigue load.

  • In this paper, an analytical method is proposed to study the effect of crack and axial load on vibration behavior and stability of the cracked columns. Using the local flexibility model, the crack has been simulated by a torsional spring with connecting two segments of column in crack location. By solving governing eigenvalue equation, the effects of crack parameters and axial load on the natural frequencies and buckling load as well as buckling load are investigated. The results show that the presents of crack cause to reduction in natural frequencies and buckling load whereas this reduction is affected by the location and depth of the crack. Furthermore, the tensile and compressive axial load increase and decrease the natural frequencies, respectively. In addition, as the compression load approaches to certain value, the fundamental natural frequency reaches zero and instability occurs. The accuracy of the model is validated through the experimental data reported in the literature.

  • The wheel bearing in vehicles has been improved to unit module by joining a bearing to a hub in order to achieve weight reduction and easy assembly. Currently, the contact force between a raceway and balls of a bearing is applied as the external force in order to analyse the structure of the unit type bearings. In this paper, simplified boundary conditions are discussed for structure analysis of wheel bearing unit. From the procedure, the contact conditions of balls and race in wheel bearing unit are considered as equivalent non-linear spring elements. The end node of a spring element is constrained in displacement. And the external force of boundary conditions is applied at the contact point between tire and road. For the evaluation of this analysis, its results for the force of spring elements are compared with contact forces of calculated results. and also maximum equivalent stresses of analysis are compared with results of test at the flange of inner ring. The analysis results with proposed boundary conditions are more accurate than results from analysis which is generally used.
