  • This study simulates the responses of large-scale bridge piers under pseudo-dynamic tests to investigate the performance of four types of numerical models that consider the nonlinear behavior of the pier and the rocking behavior of the footing. In the models, beam-column elements with plastic hinges are used for the pier, two types of foundation models (rotational spring and distributed spring models) are adopted for the footing behavior, and two types of viscous damping models (Rayleigh and dashpot models) are applied for energy dissipation. Results show that the nonlinear pier model combined with the distributed spring-dashpot foundation model can reasonably capture the behavior of the piers in the tests. Although the commonly used rotational spring foundation model adopts a nonlinear moment-rotation property that reflects the effect of footing uplift, it cannot suitably simulate the hysteretic moment-rotation response of the footing in the dynamic analysis once the footing uplifts. In addition, the piers are susceptible to cracking damage under strong seismic loading and the induced plastic response can provide contribution to earthquake energy dissipation.

  • In Korea more than ninety bridges are collapsed every year by flood, which causes the scour of pier foundation. Researches on the quantitative assessment method to assess the integrity of bridge against scour have not been organized systematically in the bridge design practice and maintenance area. In this study, dynamic characteristics assessment experiments are carried out as an emergency inspection method to assess the integrity of the pier foundation for scour after a flood. According to the dynamic characteristics assessment experiment, which simulates foundation scour of the spread footing pier, foundation scour can be evaluated by the first mode natural frequency of the pier.

  • The size of spread footings was found to be unnecessarily large from some actual engineering practices constructed in Taiwan, due to the strict design provisions related to footing uplift. According to the earlier design code in Taiwan, the footing uplift involving separation of footing from subsoil was permitted to be only up to one-half of the foundation base area, as the applied moment reaches the value of plastic moment capacity of the column. The reason for this provision was that rocking of spread footings was not a favorable mechanism. However, recent research has indicated that rocking itself may not be detrimental to seismic performance and, in fact, may act as a form of seismic isolation mechanism. In order to clarify the effects of the relative strength between column and foundation on the rocking behavior of a column, six circular reinforced concrete (RC) columns were designed and constructed and a series of rocking experiments were performed. During the tests, columns rested on a rubber pad to allow rocking to take place. Experimental variables included the dimensions of the footings, the strength and ductility capacity of the columns and the intensity of the applied earthquake. Experimental data for the six circular RC columns subjected to quasi-static and pseudo-dynamic loading are presented. Results of each cyclic loading test are compared against the benchmark test with fixed-base conditions. By comparing the experimental responses of the specimens with different design details, a key parameter of rocking behavior related to footing size and column strength is identified. For a properly designed column with the parameter higher than 1, the beneficial effects of rocking in reducing ductility and the strength demand of columns is verified.

  • New design method about the spread footing was developed using only soil and geosynthetics. This footing will be able to replace the concrete footing at constructing the foundation of small structures. As shown in Fig-3(b), after excavating the ground in semicircular shape, geosynthetics is layed on the semicircular shape of ground and let the soil filled. Geosynthetics of upper side are fixed tightly each other It can be thought to be a kind of great bag with semicircular shape. We performed two kinds of experiments to investigate the deformation and the failure shape of spread footing reinforced by geosynthetics. First, after making model ground with aluminium rods, the lattice point of 1cm ${\times}$ 1cm size of the side of aluminium rods have been painted with various kinds of colors. We have observed the movement of painted rods during loading. Second, we have taken pictures about failure process using B-shutter method. Analysing the behavior of model ground reinforced in a semicircular shape, we could know the reinforced one has much greater and wider plastic area than unreinforced one at failure. Based on the experimental results, new design method was proposed, which has a possibility to apply at the field works.

  • Recently a method for increasing the bearing capacity by laying the reinforcing materials with three or four layers as a method reinforcing the ground was studied recently. The purpose of this study is to examine the method for increasing shear-strength factor of the ground by reinforcing the ground under the foundation. According a method of wrapping ground with bakk-shape or semicircle-shape by geotextile was developed in this study and it looks likes anaspect that spreading footing exits under spread footing. A simulation loading-test using Aluminum sticks was carried out in order to examine the mechanism about bearing capacity of spread footing reinforced by geotextile. Increase of ultimate bearing capacity was verified in this simulation loading-test when charging loads to spread footing, which is propose from this study, reinforced by geotextile. And moving directions of points of the ground were also checked by grid-type indication method, and the areas where plastic failure appeared were checked by B-shutter photographing.

  • A rule based system for foundation design of building structures is developed with CLIPS in this study. The types of foundation and the allowable bearing capacity of supporting soil inferred by the rule based system for selection of foundation type, called SOFTEX, are transferred to a structural design program for building foundation. The allowable bearing capacity is calculated with N values of Standard Penetration Test. The foundation types such as independent spread footing, wall footing, combined footing and mat foundation can be inferred by the foundation merge procedure developed in this study. This procedure is based on the analysis data from the super structure and the estimated bearing capacity. By using this integrated system, structural engineers with less experience in foundation design can design the foundation system for the given superstructure and the site condition with relative ease.

  • As the connection between spread footing and pile is very important structural connection, it acts as the inter-loading medium to transfer the rail loads applied by superstructure to ground through the body pile of foundation. The experimental study is the method how to reinforce the pile cap between steel pile and footing utilizing perfobond plate with protruding keys. It were experimented on the compression punching tests and bending moment tests against the vertical loading and horizontal loadings acting on head of steel tube pipe. As a result, the tension capacity of the perfobond plate exhibited the superior performance due to the interlocking or dowel effects by the sheared keys of perfobond plate, and there were showing the sufficient strength and ductile capacity against the bending moment of horizontal loading tests. Therefore, it is judged that "the embedded method of perfobond plate in pile cap and footing" which is utilizing the shear connection of perfobond plate with protruding keys has a sufficient structural stability enough to be replaced with the current specification of reinforced method of pile cap with vertically deformed rebar against the vertical compression loads and bending moments that are able to occur in the combination structure of steel pile and the footing foundation.

  • Foundation failure due to bridge scour during floods is the leading cause of bridge failure. Performed were the evaluation of bridge scour vulnerability and prioritization on real bridges registered in the National Highway Bridge Inventory of the capital region. The case studies for 30 national highway bridges consist of site investigation including boring test, bridge scour analysis fur the design flood, bearing capacity evaluation of the bridge foundation before and after scour, comprehensive evaluation of bridge scour vulnerability, and prioritization. Nine of 26 spread (feting bridges showed the potential future vulnerability to scour with significant decrease in the bearing capacity of foundations due to scour and the remaining 17 spread footing bridges were expected to maintain their stability to resist the effects of scour. Three of 4 pile foundation bridges exhibited considerable decrease in the bearing capacity of foundation after scour.

  • In order to reuse existing onshore turbine foundations, it is important to redesign and reinforce the existing foundations according to the upgraded tower diameter and turbine load. In the present study, a slab extension reinforcement method and structure details of an anchorage part were examined in consideration of the reuse of spread footings, which are the most widely used foundation type in onshore wind turbine foundations. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the load resistance performance of a reinforced spread footing according to structure details of an anchorage part. The results showed that (1) the strength of an anchorage part could be increased by more than 30 % by adding reinforcement bars in the anchorage part, (2) pile-sleeves attached to an anchor ring contributed to an increase in rotational stiffness by preventing shear slip behavior between the anchor ring and the concrete, and (3) slab connectors contributed to an increase in the strength and deformation capacity by preventing the separation of new and old concrete slabs.
