This study is designed to understand marital relationships of the rural couples in Korea. The primary purposes of this study are to examine the relationship between marital satisfaction and role evaluation of the spouse and to construct a path model in which shows the relationships among background variables, role evaluation of the spouse and marital satisfaction. Structured guestionnaires from 435 couples with school-age children and teenagers living in rural area are analyzed in this study. The major findings are as follows : 1. Factor analysis of the role evaluation of the spouse results I 4 factors for both husbands and wives; emotional support-sexual role child socialization-economic role, kinship role and housekeeping role. 2. The most important factor influencing the marital satisfaction is the role evaluation of the spouse o emotional support-sexual relation. While the number of children, and role evaluations of the spouse influence directly on the marital satisfaction of the wives, age, level of education, level of income and husband's occupation influence indirectly through role evaluations of the spouse on that of wives. 3. For husbands, family life cycle and their occupation influence indirectly on the marital satisfaction of the husbands and the marital satisfaction of them is also mediated by role evaluations of the wieves. Level of income of the family not only influences directly on marital satisfaction but influences on it indirectly. 4. Marital satisfaction is mediated by role evaluations of the spouse. The role evaluation of the spouse on emotional support-sexual relation has the most powerful effect on the marital satisfaction for both wives and husbands. About 60 percent of the variance in the marital satisfaction of rural couples can be explained by the role evaluation of the spouse. therefore, the result of the result of the study indicates that the role evaluation of the spouse on emotional support-sexual relation plays a significant part in determining the marital satisfaction of rural couples.
This study sought to investigate the spousal role expectation of married childbearing women in the social milieu. The purpose of this study was to determine the spouse's role expectation which influences marital quality and marital satisfaction, thereby contributing to married women's psychological well-being and family health. Data collection was done in the prenatal care center of 212 early adult, married, middle class women living in the urban area by interview. Using content analysis, 701 answers were recoded by 12 categories of role expectation as family integration, health maintenance, father role taking, personal maturity, communication and respect, social confidence, division of domestic labor, relationship with extended family, recreation and hobby, social support for wife's self actualization, faith in sexual relationship, and security in economic status. The influence of the altered gender role in modern society, women's expectation is derived from somewhat masculinity and feminity in role expectation. The results are discussed in relation to prototype of gender role and relationships. These finding will assist nurse in the understanding and intervening the marital problem and women's health.
The purpose of this study was to contribute to family nursing aimed at reducing stress and improving the coping abilities of parents with kindergarten or early primary school aged children. Data were collected through self- reported questionnaires over a period of one month between November 1994 and December 199t in the Kyoung-in area. The subjects consisted of 198 parents (99 mothers and 99 fathers) of children attending 1 elementary school and 2 kindergartens. The levels of general stress and of parental role stress were measured with the General stress scale and the Parental role stress scale, respectively, while the Coping scale was used to measure the level of coping. The data were analyzed by a SAS program using paired't-test and oneway ANOVA. The results were as follows : 1. The level of general stress was significantly higher in mothers than in fathers. Mothers experienced significantly greater level of parental role stress than fathers did. In contrast, fathers revealed significantly greater scores in coping than mothers. 2. General stress experienced by fathers was different according to education, occupation, health status, satisfaction with family life and support from spouse. Occupation, health status, satisfaction with family life, satisfaction with spouse and support from spouse influenced parental role stress experienced by fathers. There was no correlation between level of coping and general characteristics. 3. In mothers, the level of general stress was different according to their health status, family type, and number of children, while parental role stress was related to satisfaction with family life, satis-faction with spouse and family type. There was no correlation between level of coping and general characteristics. The above findings indicate that the mothers did not develop more coping strategies than the fathers, despite their experience of greater stress than the fathers. Hence, nursing intervention for managing stress and improving coping abilities should be provided for mothers. In particular, fathers should actively participate in parenting, and support their spouse.
The purpose of this study is to examine how midlife working women's psychological well-being is associated with their reward/cost of family role and work role according to their kinds of job. For empirical research, 627 married working women living in Seoul, aged between 40-55 answered the structured questionnaire. The subjects consisted of 301 professional working women and 326 non-professional working women. The data were analysed by the frequencies, mean, oneway ANOVA, and multiple regression. The major findings were as follows 1) Two sub areas of midlife working women's psychological well-being-self esteem and life satisfaction-were higher than an average level. 2) The more midlife working women performed family role and work role, they perceived reward more than cost. 3) For the professional working women, the more they perceived the reward of family role and work role, the higher their psychological well-being was. The more they perceived the cost of family role and work role, the lower their psychological well-being was. These consequencies applied to not only general reward/cost of family role and work role but also interrole reward/cost between family role and work role. For the non-professional working women, general and interrole reward of family role and work role had the positive effects on psychological well-being. Their general cost of spouse role, general and interrole cost of mother role, general cost of work role had the negative erects on psychological well-being. However interrole cost between spouse role and work role did not have a significant effect on psychological well-being. Finally, the result of multiple regression analysis showed that general reward of work role had the largest positive effect on midwife working women's self-esteem. General reward/cost of spouse role had the largest effect on their life satisfaction.
This study examined the social wellbeing of working mothers of preschool children with the aim of identifying relationships between social wellbeing and influencing factors, focusing on the individual, relationship, and work environment of the mothers. Data on 390 working mothers were used for this study. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 program and descriptive statistics. Pearson's correlation analyses and hierarchical regression analyses were performed. The results show that social wellbeing has significantly positive correlations with education, monthly household income, number of children, age of the first child(8 and over), social capital for childcare, division of childcare, maternal role values, spouse's beliefs about paternal parenting involvement, and family-supportive work environment, as well as significantly negative correlations with weekly working hours, sociological ambivalence, spouse's beliefs about father's breadwinner role and gender-role values, job overload, and gender-role attitudes of coworkers. In addition, hierarchical regression revealed that spouse's beliefs about paternal parenting involvement and a family-supportive work environment were significantly positive predictors of working mothers'social wellbeing, whereas working mothers'sociological ambivalence toward their roles, job overload, and gender-role attitudes of coworkers were significantly negative predictors of working mothers'social wellbeing. These results point to ways of changing education and policy to improve the social wellbeing of working mothers.
This study is to find the relation between role performance on employed wives and husbands in family and family life contribution family life satisfaction and to found out variables which influence them. The samples were selected from the employed wives with children more than one in Seoul. Among 900 respondents 684 employed wives were finally selected as data. The major results are as follows: 1) Their husbands' role performance was affected by the level of communica-tion support from family members to their employment and that their own role performance was affected by the level of sex role attitude the level of communication degree of resourcefulness recognition and support from family members to their employment. 2) They contribution to family life was affected by type of wive's occupation sex role attitude job satisfaction husbands' role as spouse performance wive's role as spouse performance parent's role and economic role. 3) Influential variables on the degree of famil life satisfaction were income the level of communication the degree of resourcefulness recognition support from family members to their employment job satisfaction wive's role as parent and contribution to self·child-care However their contribution to housework was adversely affected family life satisfaction.
The purpose of this study was to analyze relationship between the role conflict and self-reported climacteric symptoms in the middle-aged industrial female workers. The data were collected by self-reported questionnaire from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30, 1996. The subjects were 201 women whose age, between 40 and 59 years. The analysis of data was t-test, ANOVA, $Scheff{\grave{e}}$ test, Pearson correlation coefficient analysis, Stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results were as follows : 1. 54.8% of the respondents had their climacteric symptom in middle life. 2. Age and religion affected significantly self-reported climacteric symptoms(F=4.2, P=.007 ; t=-2.1, P=0.42). 3. A comparison between two groups, with high and low rate of self-reported climacteric symptoms, indicated that for middle-aged industrial female workers when role conflict is high, climacteric symptoms is high(t=7.8, P=.000). 4. The relationship between self-reported climacteric symptoms and role conflict was positively significant(r=.5, P=.000). 5. The role conflict as a spouse affected significantly self-reported climacteric symptoms(F=52.6, P=.000). Role conflict the role as a spouse was explained 21% of self-reported climacteric symptoms. In conclusion, role conflict is the dominant factor in influencing self-reported climacteric symptoms.
The main purpose of the research was to prove, in a practical sense, the relationship among perceived equity, role stress and life satisfaction of employed wives working in sales departments. The subjects were employed wives working in sales departments who have at least one child and a spouse, living in Seoul and the Metropolitan area. The final data analysis used 487 out of 668 questionnaires. Statistical analyses were carried out using SPSS/PC WIN which included frequencies, mean, percentages, Pearson's correlation, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, factor analysis, multiple regression analysis. The findings of the study were as follows: 1) As their education level was low, the education level of their spouse was high, the communication level between couples was high, and the self-oriented perfectionism was low, their perceived emotional relationship was equal. As they were old, the communication level between couples was high, and the self-oriented perfectionism was low, their perceived position in sharing household chores was equal. On the other hand, as they were younger, the education level of their spouse was high, the reason for getting a job lay in supporting the family, and overtime hours worked, there was a higher level of role stress. 2) The influential variables which affect the life satisfaction, in order of importance, were communication level between couples, mother's role stress, age, non-financial reason of getting a job, and sharing household works. For relative contribution degree about life satisfaction, psychological variables among independent variables were revealed as the most influential ones. Thus, efficient communication between couples affected the life satisfaction to a great degree. Furthermore, the study proved that not only role stress variables but also perceived equity variables contributed to the life satisfaction.
The purpose of this study is to construct an evaluation and improvement program of the spousal role in middle-aged rural couples. Based on the results of the previous survey conducted for the development of a program in 2001 and a review of previous research, this program consisted of four sessions, such as the history of my marriage-change and continuance, equal spouse role-individuation and integration, healthy role performance and communication, and the improvement of relations and the giving tree. Also the improvement indicators can be used as an educational tool for the educational program of the four sessions that were developed. The educational program was accomplished by giving lectures and activities for one hour per session. The effectiveness of the educational program on every role area except the economical role area was proved to be significant.
The purpose of this study was to contribute to family nursing in the areas of reducing stress and improving coping for parents of mentally retarded children. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires during a period of 2 months between November 1994 and January 1995 in the Kyoung-in area. The subjects consist of 176 parents (88 mothers and 88 fathers) of mentally retarded children attending schools for the handicapped. The levels of general stress and of parental role stress were measured with the General stress scale and the Parental role stress scale, respectively. The coping scale developed by Folkman & LaZarus was adopted to measure the level of coping, and the patterns of adaptation scale developed by Damrosch & Perry was adopted to measure the patterns of adaptation. The data were analyzed by a SAS program using Fisher's exact test, paired t-test, and oneway ANOVA. The results are as follows ; 1. The level of general stress was significantly higher in mothers than in fathers. Mothers experienced a significantly greater level of parental role stress than fathers did. No significant difference in the level of coping was observed between mothers and fathers. There were differences in maternal and paternal patterns of adaptation. 2. The adaptation pattern of fathers was different according to their level of general stress, parental role stress and coping. The adaptation pattern of mothers was not different according to their level of general stress and parental role stress, but was according to their level of coping. 3. General stress experienced by fathers was different according to education, health status and support from their spouses. Satisfaction with family life, satisfaction with spouse and the support from spouse influenced coping used by fathers. Their level of parental role stress was not associated with any of their general characteristics. 4. In mothers, the level of general stress was different according to their health status, the level of parental role stress was related to satisfaction with family life and satisfaction with spouse. Their level of coping was associated with the sup port from spouse. The above findings indicate that mothers did not have more coping strategies than fathers did, despite the results which showed that mothers experienced greater stress than fathers did. Especially, the adaptation pattern of mothers was different according to their level of coping. Hence, nursing interventions directed at managing stress and improving coping should be used with mothers who use adaptation pattern 1. In particular, fathers should actively participate in parenting, and support their spouses.
