The current study examined speech rate and its variance in spontaneous Seoul Korean speech. The current study focused on factors affecting the variance of speech rate such as utterance length, individual speakers, and gender. The results revealed that, first, utterance length has a significant influence on speech rate. Longer utterances were spoken at a faster rate. Second, regarding the effect of utterance length, individual speakers differed significantly in their speaking rate. The variation between speakers and within speakers tended to increase as utterance length increases. Third, there were speakers' gender differences, indicating that males produced considerably faster speaking rate than females. Additionally, the current study implied that non-linguistic factors in spontaneous speech can affect the variance of speakers' speaking rate.
The purpose of this study was to characterize and determine variances of speaking fundamental frequency and vocal intensity depending on gender and three utterance conditions (spontaneous speech, reading, and counting). A total of 65 undergraduate students (32 male students, 33 female students) attending universities in Daegu, South Korea participated in this study. The subjects were all in their 20s. This study used KayPENTAX's Visi-Pitch IV (Model 3950) to measure the variances of speaking fundamental frequency (SFF0) and vocal intensity (VI). As a result, this study came to the following conclusions. First, it was found that both males and females showed no significant difference in SFF0 and vocal intensity among three utterance conditions. Second, this study sought to analyze differences in the variances of SFF0 between males and females. As a result, it was found that females showed significantly higher levels of four measured variances (SFF0 $SD^{**}$, SFF0 $range^{***}$, Min $SFF0^{***}$ and Max $SFF0^{***}$) than males on spontaneous speech. However, it was found that there was no significant difference between males and females in SFF0 range on reading or in SFF0 SD and SFF0 range on counting. It was found that there was no significant difference between males and females in the level of measured variances of vocal intensity depending on utterance conditions. Finally, this study made a comparison and analysis on differences in the variances of SFF0 and vocal intensity among utterance conditions. As a result, it was found that all the measured variances of SFF0 in males were most significantly reduced depending upon spontaneous speech which was followed by reading and counting respectively (SFF0 SD: p<.001, SFF0 range: p<.05, Max SFF0: p<.05). Females however, show no significant difference in the measured variances of SFF0 depending upon three utterance conditions. It was also found that the measured variances of vocal intensity in females were most significantly reduced depending on spontaneous speech that was followed by reading and counting (VI SD: p<.001, VI range: p<.001, Min VI: p<.01 Max VI: p<.05), while males showed no significant difference in the measured variances of vocal intensity depending on three utterance conditions. In sum, these findings suggest that variances of SFF0 in males are affected by three utterance conditions, while variances of vocal intensity in females are affected by three utterance conditions.
This study sought to compare breath competence in three different utterance conditions when reading a passage aloud, making a spontaneous speech, and singing. We tested 15 normal females (ages averaging $24{\pm}4.4$) and measured breath competence through an objective, aero-mechanical instrument called PAS (Phonatory aerodynamic system, model 6600, KAY Electronics, Inc). Breathing sets of inspiration and expiration were measured by breath group number, breath group duration, and the ratio of inspiration to expiration. The results from this study led us to the following conclusion: The breath group number and the breath group duration showed no significant difference. However, the only variance that we could find was in the ratio of inspiration and expiration. In significantly different speech patterns, singing resulted in the most varied ratio of inspiration and expiration, followed by reading a text aloud, and spontaneous speech. The average frequency rates and maximum intensity levels varied with regards to varying utterance conditions. This thus shows that breath competence and phonation competence have a closely interrelated relationship.
The purpose of this study is to compare the speech rate of advanced Korean(L2) learners and Korean native speakers in spontaneous utterances. Specifically, the current study investigated the difference of the two groups' speech pattern according to utterance length. Eight advanced Korean(L2) learners and eight Korean native speakers participated in this study. The data were collected by recording their conversation and physical measurements (speaking rate, articulatory rates, pause and several types of speech disfluency) were taken on extracted 120 utterances from 12 out of the 16 participants. The findings show that advanced Korean learners' speech pattern is similar to that of Koreans in the short-length utterance. However, in the long-length utterance, two groups show different speech patterns; while the articulatory rate of Korean native speakers increased in the long-length utterance, that of Korean learners decreased. This suggests that the frequency of speech disfluency factors might affect this result.
This study attempts to suggest a criterion of Korean language development. For this purpose we investigated speaking rates of the spontaneous utterances produced by 144 children, aged 3 to 8. We analyzed each subject's speaking rate and its relevance with speaker's age, gender and utterance length. To determine the relative contributions of variables to the speaking rate, multiple regression was conducted. Results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) The mean and maximum values of the speaking rate increased with the growth of age. (2) A statistically significant increase in speaking rate appeared at two-year intervals. (3) There was no significant difference between male and female groups in the speaking rate. (4) The multiple regression analysis has shown that along with the speaker's age, the utterance length(the mean number of syllables per utterance) is also important in estimating the speaking rates.
This study investigated the development of complex sentences in the early utterances of Korean-Chinese children. The subjects were 47(20 2-year-old, 15 3-year-old, and 12 4-year-old) Korean-Chinese children living in China. Each child's spontaneous natural speech during interaction with his/her caregiver was videotaped for about 30 minutes and analyzed for Korean complex sentences using Kim's(2000) categories and Korean Computerized Language Analysis 2.0(2000). Results showed that older children were higher in Mean Length of Utterance and in number and frequency of word types than younger children. The language development of bilingual children was delayed compared with monolingual children but the developmental sequence between bilingual and monolingual children was similar.
This study aims to discuss pitch slope on Korean intonation curve in spontaneous speech data. For this study, 656 utterances were taken in the spoken corpus and used 'close-copy stylization'. And then the physical feature of pitch movements was extracted for the study. The pitch slope was calculated on the basis of time and pitch range in each utterance. As a result, the average and distribution of pitch slope is similar between men and women in the range of the pitch movement except for essential differences. The slope of pitch movement confirms that there are no differences between men and women. Pitch slope on a scale of -10 to 10 is 90% of the entire pitch slope; pitch slope that moves by time scale without curve is 33.1%; pitch slope that moves half of the pitch bandwidth during the average time for pitch movement is 23.4%; pitch slope that moves 100% of pitch bandwidth during a half of the average time for pitch movement is 10.4%. Those results imply the possibility of standardization methods of Korean intonation by pitch slope.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between conversational function and question type in mothers' utterances and their infant's language development. The subjects were 20 infants from 1;07 to 1;11 years of age in Yanji, China. Each child's spontaneous natural speech during interaction with his/her mother was videotaped for about 30 minutes. The children and their mother's spontaneous utterances were transcribed and coded for the number of type and token of word, grammatical morpheme conversational function and type of question in mother's language input to her child. The result showed that mothers used questions as the most frequent conversational function with their infants. The number of questions in conversational function in mothers' utterances positively correlated with the type of word, type of morpheme and grammatical morpheme in infants' utterance. However, there was no correlation between mothers' language input and infant early language development.
The purpose of this paper is to extract the vowel formants of the ten adult male speakers in their twenties and thirties from the Korean Corpus of Spontaneous Speech [4], also known as the Seoul corpus, and to analyze them by comparing to earlier works on the Buckeye Corpus of Conversational Speech [1] in terms of the various linguistic factors that are expected to affect the formant distribution. The vowels extracted from the Korean corpus were also compared to those of the read Korean. The results showed that the distribution of the vowel formants from the Korean corpus was very different from that of read Korean speech. The comparison with English corpus and read English speech showed similar patterns. The factors affecting the Korean vowel formants were the interviewer sex, the location of the target vowel or the syllable containing it with respect to the phrasal word or utterance and the speech rate of the surrounding words.
