The mapping of the spin-spin relaxation time T2 in pixed-by-pixel was suggested as a quantitative diagnostic tool in medicine. Although the CPMG pulse sequence has been known to be the best pulse sequence for T2 measurement in physics NMR, the supplied pulse sequence by the manufacture of MRI system was able to obtain the maximum of 4 CPMG images. Eight or more images with different echo time TEs are required to construct a reliable T2 map, so that two or more acquisitions were required, which easily took more than 10 minutes. 4-echo CPMG imaging pulse sequence was modified to generate the maximum of 8 MR images with evenly spaced echo time TEs. In human MR imaging, since patients tend to move at least several pixels between the different acquisitions, 8-echo CPMG imaging sequence reduces the acquisition time and may remove any misregistration of each pixel's signal for the fitting T2. The resultant T2 maps using the theoretically simulated images and using the MR images of the human brain suggested that 8 echo CPMG sequence with short echo spacing such as 17∼20 msec can give the reliable T2 map.
The purpose was to reduce the distortion of the image that occurs in the temporal bone area due to the very strong differences in susceptibility. A new SS-TSE technique was applied when examining the diffusion-weighted image of the temporal bone, where the auditory and facial nerves to be imaged were very thin and were adjacent to the cranial base including bone and air. This study was conducted from March 2020 to August of the same year, targeting 32 subjects who underwent the diffusion-weighted imaging of the temporal bone. To compare the distortion, existing SS-EPI technique and the new SS-TSE technique were both applied on the temporal bone area. As a result of the study, applying the new SS-TSE technique appeared to lower the distortion of images by 87.44, 46.13 and 42.35 % on the b-value 0, 800 and the ADC images, respectively. In conclusion, when using the new SS-TSE technique on the temporal bone DWI, distortion can be reduced, and thus images with high diagnostic value can be obtained.

Purpose : To find sensitivity of MRI imaging methods to slow flow phantom study was performed with conventional Spin-Echo, gradient echo based Phase Contrast, fast GRASS, and heavily T2-weighted Fast Spin Echo pulse sequences. Materials and Methods : A siphon driven flow phantom was constructed with a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt catheter and a GE phantom to achieve continuous variable flow. Four different pulse sequences including Spin-Echo, Phase Contrast, GRASS and Heavily T2-weighted Fast Spin Echo were evaluated to depict slow flow in the range from 0.08 ml/min to 1.7 ml/min and to compare signal intensities between static fluid and flowing fluid. Results : In the slow flow above 0.17 ml/min conventional Spin-Echo showed superior apparent contrast between static and flowing fluid while GRASS was more sensitive to the very slow flow below 0.17 ml/mim. It was not accurate to calculate flow and velocity below 0.1 ml/min with a modified PC imaging. Conclusion : Four different MR pulse sequences demonstrated different sensitivity to the range of slow flow from 0.08 ml/min to 1.7 ml/min. This finding may be clinically useful to measure CSF shunt flow or detecting CSF collection and thrombosis.
To evaluate the accuracy and extent in the localization of cerebral motor coutex activation using a gradient- echo echo planar imaging(GE-EPI) compared to spin-echo echo planar iimaging(SE-EPI) on 3T MR imaging. Functional MR imaging of cerebral motor cortex activation was examined in GE-EPI and SE-EPI in five healthy male volunteers. A right finger movement was accomplished with a paradigm of 6 task and rest, periods and the cross-correlation was used for a statistical mapping algorithm. We evaluated any sorts of differenced of the time seried and the signal intensity changes between the rest and task periods obtained with two technoques. The qualitative analysis was distributed with activation sites of large veins and small veins by using two techniques and was found that both the techniques were clinically uesful for delineating large veins and small veins in fMRL Signal intensity charge of the rest and activation periods provided simmilar activations in both methods(GE-EPI : 0.93$\pm$0.11, SE-EPI : 0.80$\pm$.015) but the signal intensity in GE-EPI(133.95$\pm$15.76) was larger than in SE-EPI(74.5$\pm$18.90). The average SNRs of EPI raw data were higher at SMA in SE-EPI(48.54$\pm$12.37) than GE-EPI(41.4$\pm$12.54) and at M1 in SE-EPI(43.24$\pm$11.77) than GE-EPI(38.27$\pm$6.53). The localization of activation voxels of the GE-EPI showed a larger vein but the SE-EPI generally showed small vein. Then the analysis results of the two techniques were used for a statistacal paired student t-test. SE-EPI was found clinically useful for localizing the cerebral moter cortex cativation on 3.0T, but showed a little different activation patterns comparad to GE-EPI. In conclusion, SE-EPI may be feasible and can detect true cortical activation from capillaries and GE-EPI can obtain the large veins in the motor cortex activation on 3T MR imaging.
An echo planar imaging (EPI)-based spin-echo sequence Is often used to obtain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data on most of the clinical MRI systems, However, this sequence is confounded with the susceptibility artifacts, especially on the temporal lobe in the human brain. Therefore, the objective of this study was to design a pulse sequence that relatively immunizes the susceptibility artifacts, but can map diffusion tensor components in a single-shot mode. A multi-slice multi-echo pulsed-gradient spin-echo (MePGSE) sequence with eight echoes wasdeveloped with selective refocusing pulses for all slices to map the full tensor. The first seven echoes in the train were diffusion-weighted allowing for the observation of diffusion in several different directions in a single experiment and the last echo was for crusher of the residual magnetization. All components of diffusion tensor were measured by a single shot experiment. The sequence was applied in diffusive phantoms. The preliminary experimental verification of the sequence was illustrated by measuring the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) for tap water and by measuring diffusion tensor components for watermelon. The ADC values in the series of the water phantom were reliable. The MePGSE sequence, therefore, may be useful in human brain studies.

Purpose : To determine the diagnostic accuracy of four different sequences : moderately T2 weighted, two heavily T2-weighted single shot turbo spin-echo sequence and breath-hold axial-2D balanced turbo field-echo sequence(bFFE) for characterization of focal lesions. Materials and Methods : During the 3-month period between June and August 2005, seventy-six patients were proved to have ninety-three focal hepatic lesions on MR imaging. The patients consisted of 49 men and 27 women (age range, 15-75 years; mean age, 56.23 years). All MR images were acquired on a 1.5-T MR using the following sequences: 1. A breath-hold axial T2-weighted single shot turbo spin-echo sequence, 2. a breath-hold axial-2D balanced turbo field-echo sequence. Two radiologists performed quantitative analysis. Another radiologist measured the lesion-to-liver contrast-to-noise ratio at the region-of-interest in the four sequences. Results : There was no significant difference in inter-observer variability between the four sequences. The accuracy for both cyst and malignancy of moderate T2 weighted MRI (echo time: 80 msec) was also highest. There was significant difference for lesion characterization between moderate T2 weighted MRI and balanced steady state procession (p-value: 0.004) in the second reader. For longer echo time, the CNR of cystic lesions were markedly increased in comparison to lesions of other component. Conclusion : The accuracy and inter-observer variability of single shot turbo spin echo T2 weighted sequence was higher than bFFE. Although there was no statically significant difference, moderate T2 weighted MRI (echo time: 80 msec) was more accurate than heavily T2 weighted sequence (echo time: 300 msec). If the results for lesion characterization is equivocal in TE 80, the addition of heavily T2 weighted MRI (echo time: 180 msec) can be helpful.
T1-, and T2-weighted imagings and FLAIR (fluid attenuated inversion recovery) imaging are fundamental imaging methods in the brain. T1-weighted imaging is a spin-echo sequence with short TR and short TE and produces the tissue contrast by different T1 relaxation times. In other words, short TR maximizes the difference of the longituidinal magnetization recovery between the tissues. T2-weighted imaging is a spin-echo sequence with long TR and long TE and produces the tissue contrast by different T2 relaxation times. Long TE maximizes the difference of the transverse magnetization decay between the tissues. FLAIR is an inversion recovery sequence using 180 degree inversion pulse. 2500 msec of inversion time is applied to suppress the CSF signal.
MnAPSO-34 and Mn-impregnated SAPO-34(Mn-SAPO-34) sample were prepared with various manganese contents and studied by electron spin resonance(ESR) and electron spin echo modulation(ESEM). Electron spin echo modulation analysis of 0.07mo1 % Mn(relative to p) in MnAPSO-34 with adsorbed D$_{2}$O shows two deuteriums at 0.26 nm and two at 0.36 nm from Mn. This suggests that two waters hydrate an MnO$_{4}$ configuration with a D-O bond orientation for the waters as expect for a negatively charged site at low manganese content (0.1 mol%), the ESR spectra of MnAPSO-34 and MnH-SAPO-34 exhibit the same parameters(g 2.01 and A 89 G), but the spectra obtained from MnAPSO-34 samples are better resolved. The decomposition temperature of as-synthesized MnAPSO-34 were in the range of 200-600 $^{\circ}C$ of the morpholine which is 12 $^{\circ}C$ higher than that in as-synthesized MnH-SAPO-34. Infrared spectra showed that the position of a band at 3450 $cm^{-1}$ / shifted about 15 $cm^{-1}$ / toward higher energy in MnAPSO-34 versus MnH-SAPO-34. The modulation depth of the two-pulse ESE of MnAPSO-34 with adsorbed D$_{2}$O is deeper than that of MnH-SAPO-34 with adsorbed D$_{2}$O. Three-pulse ESEM of MnAPSO-34 and MnH-SAPO-34 with adsorbed deuterium oxide shows that the local environments of manganese in the hydrated samples are different, suggesting that Mn(II) is framework substituted in MnAPSO-34 since it obviously occupies an extraframework position in MnH-SAPO-34.
