  • A triblock copolymer based on $poly(\varepsilon-caprolactone)$ (PCL) as the hydrophobic part and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as the hydrophilic portion was synthesized by a ring-opening mechanism of ${\varepsilon}-caprolactone$ with PEG containing a hydroxyl group at bot h ends as an initiator. The synthesized block copolymers of PCL/PEG/PCL (CEC) were confirmed and characterized using various analysis equipment such as 1H NMR, DSC, FT-IR, and WAXD. Core-shell type nanoparticles of CEC triblock copolymers were prepared using a dialysis technique to estimate their potential as a colloidal drug carrier using a hydrophobic drug. From the results of particle size analysis and transmission electron microscopy, the particle size of CEC core-shell type nanoparticles was determined to be about 20-60 nm with a spherical shape. Since CEC block copolymer nanoparticles have a core-shell type micellar structure and small particle size similar to polymeric micelles, CEC block copolymer can self-associate at certain concentrations and the critical association concentration (CAC) was able to be determined by fluorescence probe techniques. The CAC values of the CEC block copolymers were dependent on the PCL block length. In addition, drug loading contents were dependent on the PCL block length: the larger the PCL block length, the higher the drug loading content. Drug release from CEC core-shell type nanoparticles showed an initial burst release for the first 12 hrs followed by pseudo-zero order release kinetics for 2 or 3 days. CEC-2 block copolymer core-shell type nanoparticles were degraded very slowly, suggesting that the drug release kinetics were governed by a diffusion mechanism rather than a degradation mechanism irrelevant to the CEC block copolymer composition.

  • Devolatilization is an important mechanism in the gasification and pyrolysis of woody biomass, and has to be accordingly considered in designing a gasifier. In order to describe the devolatilization process of wood particle, there have been proposed a number of empirical correlations based on experimental data. However, the correlations are limited to apply for various reaction conditions due to the complex nature of wood devolatilization. In this study, a simple model was developed for predicting the devolatilization of a wood particle in a fluidized bed reactor. The model considered the drying, shrinkage and heat generation of intra-particle for a spherical biomass. The influence of various parameters such as size, initial moisture content, heat transfer coefficient, kinetic model and temperature, was investigated. The devolatilization time linearly increased with increasing initial moisture content and size of a wood particle, whereas decreases with reaction temperature. There is no significant change of results when the external heat transfer coefficient is over 300 $W/m^2K$, and smaller particles are more sensitive to the outer heat transfer coefficient. Predicted results from the model show a similar tendency with the experimental data from literatures within a deviation of 10%.

  • A new approach to retrieve the single-scattering albedo (SSA) of Asian dust plume, mixed with pollution particles, using multi-wavelength Raman lidar system was suggested in this study. Asian dust plume was separated as dust and non-dust particle (i.e. spherical particle) by the particle depolarization ratio at 532 nm. The vertical profiles of optical properties (the particle extinction coefficient at 355 and 532 nm and backscatter coefficient at 355, 532 and 1064 nm) for non-dust particle were used as input parameter for the inversion algorithm. The inversion algorithm provides the vertical distribution of microphysical properties of non-dust particle only so that the estimation of the SSA for the Asian dust in mixing state was suggested in this study. In order to estimate the SSA for the mixed Asian dust, we combined the SSA of non-dust particles retrieved by the inversion algorithms with assumed the SSA of 0.96 at 532 nm for dust. The retrieved SSA of Asian dust plume by lidar data was compared with the Aerosol Robotics Network (AERONET) retrieved values and showed good agreement.

  • TRISO(tri-isotropic)-coated fuel particle technology is utilized owing to its higher stability at a high temperature and Its efficient retention capability for fission products In the HTGR(high temperature gas-reeled reactor). The typical spherical TRISO fuel panicle with a diameter of about 1mm is composed of a nuclear fuel kernel and outer coating layers. The outer coating layers consist of a buffer PyC(pyrolytic carbon) layer, Inner PyC(1-PyC) layer, SiC layer, and outer PyC(O-PyC) layer Most of the Inspection Items for the TRTSO-coated fuel particle depend on destructive methods. The coating thickness of the TRISO fuel particle can be nondestructively measured by the X-ray radiography without generating radioactive wastel. In this study, the coaling thickness for the simulated TRISO-coated fuel particle with $ZrO_2$ kernel Instead of $%UO_2$ kernel was measured by using micro-focus X-ray radiography with micro-focus X-ray generator and flat panel detector The radiographic image was also enhanced by image processing technique to acquire clear boundary lines between coating layers. The coaling thickness wat effectively measured by applying the micro-focus X-ray radiography The inspection process for the TRISO-coated fuel particles will be improved by the developed micro-focus X-ray radiography and digital image processing technology.

  • Microstructural characteristics of semi-solid state processed hypereutectic Al-Si alloys have been investigated. Main concern of the present study is to investigate the effects of P and Sr addition on the size and morphology change of the primary Si particles. Refinement of the primary Si particles was observed with the addition of P and Sr at the early stage of semi-solid state processing, but such a refining effects became negligible resulting in Si particles with a near-spherical morphology with continuous stirring. This implies that the microstructural transformation mechanism became more dependent to stirring effects than to the alloying effects during semi-solid state processing. Brittle fracture and agglomeration were proposed as the mechanisms for microstructural alterations during semi-solid state processing.

  • Silica powders were prepared from $SiCl_4$-$H_2$O system by chemical vapor deposition process, and investigated on size control of the products with reaction conditions. The products were amorphous and nearly spherical particles with 130nm~50nm in size. The size distribution became narrow with the increase of [$H_2$O]/[SiCl$_4$] concentration ratio. The particle size decreased with the increase of reaction temperature, [$H_2$O]/[SiCl$_4$] concentration ratio and total flow rate. The specific surface area measured by BET method was about three times larger than that of electron microscope method.

  • A plunge pool is often employed as an energy-dissipating device at the end of a spillway or a pipe culvert. A jet from spillways or pipes frequently generates a scour hole which threaten the stability of the hydraulic structure. Existing scour prediction formulas of plunge pool of spillways or pipe culverts give a wide range of scour depths, and it is, therefore, difficult to accurately predict those scour depths. In this study, a new experimental method and new sour prediction formulas under submerged circular jet for large bed materials with shallow tailwater depths were developed. A major variable, which was not used in previous scour prediction equations, was the ratio of jet size to bed material size. In this study, jet momentum acting on a bed particle and jet diffustion theory were employed to derive scour prediction formulas. Four theoretical formulas were suggested for the two regions of jet diffusion, i.e., the region of flow establishment and the region of established flow. The semi-theoretically developed scour prediction formulas showed close agreement with laboratory experiments performed on movable bed made of large spherical particles.

  • $TiO_2$ nanostructures with various morphologies like cubes, spheres, hexahedral pillars and spherical tubes were synthesized by microwave-assisted hydrothermal process. Each structure was obtained by changing the relative concentrations of titanium tetraisoproxide (TTIP), tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) and ethanol. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electoron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis were used to characterize the synthesized $TiO_2$ nanostructures. From these results, it has been proved that $TiO_2$ structure could be controlled to have specific morphology, size, surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution.

  • Tin oxide ($SnO_2$) nanoparticles have been synthesized by solution combustion method using citric acid as a fuel. The oxide to fuel ratio has been varied to obtain ultrafine nanoparticles with better surface area; such particles will be useful in many applications. With this synthesis method, spherical particles are formed having a particle size in the range of 11-30 nm and BET surface area of ~ $24m^2/g$. The degree of agglomeration of $SnO_2$ nanoparticles has been calculated.
