  • Some open jet wind tunnels have been operating under limitations due to large pressure fluctuations at some wind tunnel speeds. The Hyundai Aero-acoustic full scale Wind Tunnel (HAWT), which was completed in 1999, shows that most of the specifications were fulfilled but wind tunnel pulsations at some wind speeds were observed. Hyundai Motor Company started the wind tunnel modification in order to solve this problem in 2001. After the modification work the amplitude of pressure fluctuation was reduced and below required level over full wind speed range. Aero-acoustic performance, e.g. background noise, as well as aerodynamic performance were improved after this work.

  • In this study, the effects of the power transmission units on the rotational accuracy are investigated experimentally in a hydrostatic spindle. The effects of warm up time, unbalancing and the position of measuring sensor are pre-examined for the determination of measuring conditions. The misalignment of the power transmission units and the vibration excited by the fluctuation of belt are considered as the dominant parameters of error motion. The variation and scatter of run out at the range of 0 to 3,000rpm in rotational speed are appropriated for the camparison of availabilities of the transmission units to precision spin- dles.

  • The depth dependent sound fields have been calculated for a single frequency source to reveal the fluctuating sound energy at both near the surface and the bottom of the water layer. Those fluctuation are mainly due to the mode function behavior along the depth where the sound-speed gradient acts like trapping lower mode sound energy in those medium.

  • The load of electric railroad can generate voltage fluctuation in the electric railway system because of high speed of the electric railroad and frequent movement and stop. This voltage fluctuation of electric railway system can cause not only voltage imbalance but also harmonic in the utility grid. Therefore the electric railroad system is in need of the reactive power compensation, such as static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and static var compensator (SVC). Especially, the battery energy storage system (BESS) can control the real and reactive power at the same time. In this paper, the electric railway system using BESS has been modeled to show its voltage compensation effect using Matlab/Simulink.

  • Oscillatory wheel load fluctuation of considerable amplitude is almost always observed on railway vehicle running at high speed. From the acceleration measured on the axle-box, the frequency of this fluctuation is estimated to be approximately within 70 Hz. By the conventional measuring method, continuous outputs of wheel load can not be obtained, so it is difficult to investigate such a high frequency phenomenon exactly. We have developed a new method of measuring the forces and derailment coefficient continuously, using two pairs of strain gauge bridges whose output phases are shifted by 90 degree, and summing up the outputs with a weighting function. This method is available for measuring the forces between wheel and rail up to high frequency. In this paper, continuous method of measuring forces between wheel and rail and derailment coefficient.

A Variable Speed Limits Operation Model to Minimize Confliction at a Bottleneck Section by Cumulative Demand-Capacity Analysis (대기행렬이론을 이용한 병목지점 충돌위험 저감 가변속도제어 운영모형)

  • This study proposed a Variable Speed Limits(VSL) algorithm to use traffic information based on Cumulative Demand-Capacity Analysis and evaluated its performance. According to the analysis result, the total of delay consisted of 3 separate parts. There was no change in total travel time although the total of delay decreased. These effects was analysed theoretically and then, evaluated through VISSIM, a microscopic simulator. VISSIM simulation results show almost same as those of theoretical analysis. Furthermore in SSAM analysis with VISSIM simulation log, the number of high risk collisions decreased 36.0 %. However, the total delay decrease effect is not real meaning of decrease effect because the drivers' desired speed is same whether the VSL model is operated or not. Nevertheless this VSL model maintains free flow speed for longer and increases the cycle of traffic speed fluctuation. In other words, this is decrease of delay occurrence and scale. The decrease of speed gap between upstream and downstream stabilizes the traffic flow and leads decrease number of high risk collision. In conclusion, we can expect increase of safety through total delay minimization according to this VSL model.

Analysis of the PTO Driveline Rattle Noise on an Agricultural Tractor (농업용 트랙터 PTO 전동라인의 래틀 소음 분석)

  • In this study, we analyze the rattle noise of a power takeoff (PTO) driveline and develop a PTO driveline resonance model. We measured the rattle noise of the PTO driveline on the output shaft and, by analyzing the rattle noise in the time domain, we determine that the engine expansion stroke period matches the sound pressure of rattle noise. This finding helped us demonstrate that the rattle noise is caused by the collision between the PTO driving gear and the gear driven by the engine expansion stroke; the torsional vibration caused by this collision is affected by the angular velocity fluctuation of the PTO drive shaft. By measuring the angular velocity of the PTO drive shaft, we confirm that the angular velocity fluctuation of the engine flywheel tends to excessively amplify the PTO drive shaft angular velocity fluctuation. We conclude that the resonance, which occurs when the operating frequency of the engine is close to the natural frequency of the tractor power transmission system, causes the excessive angular velocity fluctuation of the PTO drive shaft. We performed a modal analysis of the PTO driveline resonance and, using the characteristic equation, we show that the resonance occurs when the engine rotation speed is close to 850 rpm, which matches the natural frequency of the PTO driveline.

  • When the trains runs at a high speed in the tunnel, passengers feel a pain in the ear that fast pressure fluctuation inside the tunnel being delivered with pressure fluctuation inside the passenger car. These phenomena are called "aural discomfort". Aural discomfort increase the passengers' uncomfort so that it is decreased a service level and serious case, it is able to damage the ear of the passenger. therefore aural discomfort must be considered the high-speed railroad tunnel cross-section design. To solve the problem of aural discomfort in a railway tunnel, some countries have standards on aural discomfort. It has been studied that different countries have different standards on aural discomfort. For that reason, the criteria of aural discomfort was reviewed through the standards of Kyungbu HSR line and different countries in this paper. And then Numerical Analysis of the Characteristics with tunnel cross-section change has been used for the selection of the optimum cross-section of Honam. The numerical analysis results were compared to field test results in order to verifying the reliability of the numerical analysis.
