  • This study was carried out to develop a microcomputer-based data acquisition and control system which was able to collect the data of engine performance test automatically and control the speed and load of the engine. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. The signal processing devices, which were able to measure cylinder pressure, coolant temperature, compositions of exhaust gas, fuel consumption, engine rpm and torque etc., were developed. The results of calibration showed that all of devices had high accuracy ranging from 0.3% to 0.69% respectively. 2. The PIA (peripheral interface adapter) for interfacing digital signal and PTM (programmable timer module) for displaying real time every 0.0408 sec were designed and developed. 3. An engine-speed control system using a stepping motor and driver was developed. The control system had the stability, and faster settling time than the manual control system. 4. The automatic control system of electrical dynamometer, which was able to control the speed and load of dynamometer, was developed with a SSD (shackleton system driver) and D/A converter. 5. The computer programs, which were able to collect and process the data of engine tests, were developed using both the machine language and BASIC.

  • V.42bis, a type of LZW(Lempel-Ziv-Welch) code, is well-known as theinter national standard is asynchronous data compression. In this paper, we analyze several undesirable phenomena arising from the application of v.42bis to high speed data transmission, and we propose a modified technique to overcome them. the proposed technique determines the proper size of the dictionary, one of important factors affecting the compression ratio, and improves the method of dictionary generation for a higher compression ratio. Furthermore, we analyze the problem of excessive mode changes and solve it to a certain degree by adjusting the threshold for mode change. By doing this, we can achieve smiller variation of the compression ratio in time. This improvement chtributes to easier and better design and control of the buffer in high speed data transmission.

  • In this paper, we propose a new and cost-effective RCP (Rapid Control Prototyping) system based on Matlab/Simulink and a DAQ (Data Acquisition) unit with the high speed USB communication interface. The proposed RCP system has a feature that a computer on which Simulink is running acts as a realtime controller and a DAQ unit performs data acquisition, transmission of the data to and from a computer, and the application of control data received from the computer. For its implementation, we develop 10 communication blocks each of which is constructed by using S-function. In order to increase the data communication speed and thus to reduce the sampling period of the overall control system, we propose to use a batch transfer strategy through the USB interface. The proposed RCP system has several advantages over existing methods such as good maintainability, portability due to the USB interface, low cost, and no necessity for C-code generation even though it can only be applied to control systems with moderate sampling rates. It is expected that the proposed RCP system can be useful in teaching control-related topics to undergraduate and graduate students.

  • This is the first of two companion papers that analyse ten years of on-site monitoring data for the Confederation Bridge to determine the validity of the original wind speeds and wind loads predicted in 1994 when the bridge was being designed. The check of the original design values is warranted because the design wind speed at the middle of Northumberland Strait was derived from data collected at shore-based weather stations, and the design wind loads were based on tests of section and full-aeroelastic models in the wind tunnel. This first paper uses wind, tilt, and acceleration monitoring data to determine the static and dynamic responses of the bridge, which are then used in the second paper to derive the static and dynamic wind loads. It is shown that the design ten-minute mean wind speed with a 100-year return period is 1.5% less than the 1994 design value, and that the bridge has been subjected to this design event once on November 7, 2001. The dynamic characteristics of the instrumented spans of the bridge including frequencies, mode shapes and damping are in good agreement with published values reported by others. The on-site monitoring data show bridge response to be that of turbulent buffeting which is consistent with the response predicted at the design stage.

  • A data acquisition and processing system. using an IBM PC, an AD converter, and a printer, has been developed to monitor rapidly and significantly varying signals. The sister takes live signals and computes and displays the trend of the moving averages of the signals in real time. The system has been applied to monitor the shaft horsepower and revolution and the speed of ships for their speed trial. The reliable interpretation of the measured data using moving average can eliminate unnecessary arguments between the owner and yard on the performance of the newly built ships. Other applications of the system-inspection of engine hunting, providing data for ship maneuvering analysis, vibration data analysis, extending to the ship performance monitoring system-are also demonstrated and discussed.

  • Due to the acceleration of an aging society, the need for lower limb exoskeletons to assist gait is increasing. And for use in daily life, it is essential to have technology that can accurately estimate gait phase even in the walking environment and walking speed of the wearer that changes frequently. In this paper, we implement an LSTM-based gait phase estimation learning model by collecting gait data according to changes in gait speed in outdoor level ground and stair environments. In addition, the results of the gait phase estimation error for each walking environment were compared after learning for both max hip extension (MHE) and max hip flexion (MHF), which are ground truth criteria in gait phase divided in previous studies. As a result, the average error rate of all walking environments using MHF reference data and MHE reference data was 2.97% and 4.36%, respectively, and the result of using MHF reference data was 1.39% lower than the result of using MHE reference data.

  • In Korea, the HEMU-400X(High-speed Electric Multiple Unit-400km/h eXpress) has been developed since 2007 and will be operated over 400km/h in 2013. It is necessary to prepare test-bed section in Honam high-speed railroad to take the maxim running speed test for the HEMU-400X developed. In order to determine proper test-bed sections for the maximum speed of 400km/h, TPS(Train Performance Simulation) program with the data of train model, running resistance, traction power and braking capacity was used to analyze the train performances such as locations, speeds and power consumptions by times. In this study, the specifications of the HEMU-400X project and the route conditions of the Honam high-speed railroad under construction were utilized for the TPS program to determine the optimal test-bed sections for the maximum speed of 400km/h.

  • Speed control of kerosene engine by the combination of a manual throttle and centrifugal weight type governor is not adequate for evaluating energy requirements in laboratory and field performance tests. This paper describes an engine speed control system. This system consists of Apple-II microcomputer, step motor set to the throttle shaft directly, step motor driving and interfacing circuit, engine performance data acquisition system for measuring load, speed and time and potentiometer as speed adjustor. The performance of this system was successful in maintaining engine speed within ${\pm}37$ rpm of reference speed indicated by computer and potentiometer.

  • The phase-locked loop technique developed in the 1930's has many advantages when applied to speed control. The speed control and analysis of a three phase induction motor using the PLL are described in this paper. In this system, the phase frequency detector (PFD) compares the actual motor speed from the pulses received from a shaft encoder and desired speed, and the difference adjusts the frequency of the inverter that feeds the motor, and excellent speed regulation in the order of 0.035(%) has been-obtained. A linear continuous model of the drive is developed and system response is analysed using conventional root locus techniques. Various compensating filters and feedback signals are considered and the need for addition of derivative feedback is shown. A sampled data model is used to study the effects of discrete PFD output. Stability limitson speed are predicted. A drive was implimented and experimental results are presented to verify theoretical predictions.

  • In this paper, the active monitoring and control system is developed. This system can monitor the status of high the speed spindle in real time during its processing, and can analyze its influence of dimensional accuracy and processing if any, and can control the machining condition to realize the machining system equipped with active monitoring and self-diagnostic features. Machining experiment was performed on 3 materials Al, Brass and S45C in order to derive the relation between active monitoring and control algorithm by the machining load. In addition, we measured surface roughness of processing specimen along with the data change of spindle rotating speed and conveying speed according to variation of machining load. Based on these experiments, we derived relations for each material that can be applied to the control algorithm to allow self control of the rotating speed and conveying speed according to the machining load.
