  • We use a Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) technique to derive the orbital parameters of spectroscopic binary stars. Using measured radial velocity data of five double-lined spectroscopic binary systems (i.e., EQ Tau, V376 And, V776 Cas, V2377 Oph and EE Cet), we find the corresponding orbital and spectroscopic elements. Our numerical results are in good agreement with those obtained by other groups via more traditional methods.

  • We proposed a new technique to precisely calibrate the angle of incidence in spectroscopic ellipsometer. The proposed technique can be useful to the thickness measurement of semiconductor thin films and optical thin films. The usefulness has been confirmed experimentally. We cut a block of optical glass into two pieces and made a prism as well as a slab using each piece. The apex angle and the angle of the minimum deviation of prism were measured. From these angles, the refractive index of glass material was calculated. From the analysis of the spectro-ellipsometric data collected near Brewster's angle, we could not only determine the error in the angle of incidence in the spectroscopic ellipsometer, but also calibrated the angle of incidence to the accuracy of 0.01 degree.

  • Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect deals with the enhancement of the Raman scattering intensity by molecules in the presence of a nanostructured metallic surface. The first observation of surface-enhanced Raman spectra was in 1974, when Fleischmann and his group at the University of Southampton, reported the first high-quality Raman spectra of monolayer-adsorbed pyridine on an electrochemically roughened Ag electrode surface. Over the last thirty years, it has developed into a versatile spectroscopic and analytical technique due to the rapid and explosive progress of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This review article describes the recent development in field of surface-enhanced Raman scattering research, especially fabrication of various SERS active substrates, mechanism of SERS effect and its various applications in both surface sciences and analytical sciences.

  • The spectra of scattering light fromlaser-produced plasma near its fundamental and second harmonic wavelength were observed respectively by means of spectroscopic technique. The experimental results and the generation mechanism of nonlinear effects such as the second garmonics and the brillouin scattering were analysed theoretically. The spectra of reflected laser light became wider than that of incident laser light. And the peak of spectrum of reflected light shifted to red-side from that of incident light. The second harmonic light is generated from the nonlinear interaction of the incident laser light and the electron plasma wave excited in resonance region by the oblique incidence of laser light to the plasma. The Brillouin backscattering from laser-produced plasmas of hydrogen and deuterium has shown an isotope effect in the red-side region of the generated second harmonic light. This isotope shift is explained by the parametric instability at the cutoff (resonance) region using frequency-and phase-matching conditions of the waves.

  • Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Imaging is a methodology combining the imaging and spectroscopy. It can provide the spectrum of each areas of image so that one can easily compare the spectrum of one position to another position of the image. In this study, we developed pulse sequence or the spectroscopic imaging method, RF wave forms or the saturation of water signal, computer simulations to validate our method, and confirmed the methodology with phantom experiment. Then we applied the spectroscopic method to human subject and identified a few important metabolites in in vivo. To develope a water saturating RF waveform, we used Shinnar-Le-Roux algorithm and obtained maximum phase RF waveform. With this RF pulse, it could suppress the water signal to 1:1000. The magnet is shimmed to under 1.0ppm with auto-shimming technique. The saturation bandwidth is 80Hz(2ppm). The water and fat seperation is 3.3ppm(about 140Hz at 1 Tesla magnet), the bandwidth is enough to resolve the difference. But we are more concerned about the narrow window in between the two peaks, in which the small quantity of metabolites reside. We performed the computer simulation and phantom experiments in 8*8 matrix form and showed good agreement in the image and spectrum. Finally we applied spectroscopic imaging to the brain of human subject. Only the lipid signal was shown in the periphery region which agrees with the at distribution in human head surface area. The spectrum inside the brain shows the important metabolites such as NAA, Cr/PCr, Choline. We here have shown the spectroscopic imaging which is normally done above 1.5 Tesla machine can be performed in the 1 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging Unit.

  • The extent of UV-curing photo-polymerization reaction was monitored by near-IR spectroscopic method. Acrylates containing quaternary ammonium salts and Darocur 1173 were used as reactive monomer and a photo initiator, respectively. The extent of photo-polymerization reaction was obtained from the conversion ratio of acrylate double bond calculated from the intensities of measured bands at 1615 nm and at 2105 nm. Near-IR spectroscopic methods can be an useful tool for the monitoring of the progress of photo-polymerization.

  • The technique of Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (SE) has been examined with emphasis on its inherent sensitivity to the existence of thin films or surface equivalents. A brief review of related theories like the Fresnel reflection coefficients, the effect of a multilayer upon reflectivities, together with the validity of the effective medium theory and the modelling procedure, is followed by a short description of the experimental setup of a rotating polarizer type SE as well as the necessful expressions which lead to tan and cos. Out of its numerous, successful applications, a few are exampled to convince a reader that SE can be applied to a variety of research fields related to surface, interface and thin films. Specifically, those are adsorption and/or desorption on metals or semiconductors, oxidation process, formation of passivation layers on an electrode, thickness determination, interface between semiconductor and its oxide, semiconductor heterojunctions, surface microroughness, void distribution of dielectric, optical thin films, depth profile of multilayered samples, in-situ or in-vitro characterization of a solid surface immersed in electrolyte during electrochemical, chemical, or biological treatments, and so on. It is expected that the potential capability of SE will be widely utilized in a very near future, taking advantage of its sensitivity to thin films or surface equivalents, and its nondestructive, nonperturbing characteristics.

  • We are currently living in the era of the wide field cosmological surveys, either spectroscopic such as Dark Energy Spectrograph Instrument or photometric such as the Dark Energy Survey or the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. By analyzing the distribution of matter clustering, we can use the growth of structure, in combination with measurements of the expansion of the Universe, to understand dark energy or to test different models of gravity. But we also live in the era of multi-tracer or multi-messenger astrophysics. In particular, during the next decades radio surveys will map the matter distribution at higher redshifts. Like in optical surveys, there are radio imaging surveys such as continuum radio surveys such as the ongoing EMU or spectroscopic by measuring the hydrogen 21cm line. However, we can also use intensity mapping as a low resolution spectroscopic technique in which we use the intensity given by the emission from neutral hydrogen from patches of the sky, at different redshifts. By cross-correlating this maps with galaxy catalogues we can improve our constraints on cosmological parameters and to understand better how neutral hydrogen populates different types of galaxies and haloes. Creating realistic mock intensity mapping catalogues is necessary to optimize the future analysis of data. I will present the mock neutral hydrogen catalogues that we are developing, using the Horizon run 4 simulations, to cross-correlate with mock galaxy catalogues from low redshift surveys and I will show the preliminary results from the first mock catalogues.

  • We report the first spectroscopic evidence of the jet-cooled p-chloro-${\alpha}$-methylbenzyl radical. The visible vibronic emission spectrum was recorded from the corona discharge of precursor p-chloro-ethylbenzene seeded in a large amount of inert carrier gas helium using a pinhole-type glass nozzle coupled with a technique of corona excited supersonic expansion. From the comparison with the vibronic spectrum of the p-chlorobenzyl radical, we identified the evidence of formation of the jet-cooled p-chloro-${\alpha}$-methylbenzyl radical in the corona discharge of precursor p-chloro-ethylbenzene.
