  • One of the input parameters in the evaluation of seismic performance of rockfill dams is shear-wave velocity of rock debris and clay core. Reliable evaluation of shear-wave velocity by surface-wave methods requires overcoming the problems of rock-debris discontinuity, material inhomogeneity and sloping boundary. In this paper, for the shear-wave velocity investigation of rockfill dams, SBF (Short-Array Beamforming) technique was proposed using the principles of conventional beamforming technique and adopted to solve limitations of the conventional surface-wave techniques. SBF technique utilizes a 3- to 9-m long measurement array and a far-field source, which allowed the technique to eliminate problems of near-field effects and investigate local anomalies. This paper describes the procedure to investigate shear-wave velocity profile of rockfill dams by SBF technique and IRF (Impulse-response filtration) technique with accuracy and reliability. Validity of the proposed SBF technique was verified by comparisons with downhole tests and CapSASW (Common-Array-Profiling Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves) tests at a railroad embankment compacted with rock debris.

  • The spectral-analysis-of-surface-waves (SASW) method is a nondestructive testing method based upon generation and detection of elastic stress waves. SASW is widely used as one of the techniques to determine stiffness profile in engineering geophysics. The essential steps involved are construction of an experimental dispersion curve from data collected in situ, and inversion of the dispersion curve to determine the stiffness profile. The main object of this study is to derive an analytical Jacobian for the inversion. If we set the subsurface to N homogeneous layer, it could save 2N times Jacobian calculation compared to numerical jacobian calculation during inversion. To reconstruct a stiffness profile, constrained damped least square method was applied for the inversion. The algorithm was tested for the numerical data and for the real asphalt and tunnel data, which were able to verify the stiffness profile. The stiffness profile reconstructed by the algorithm showed the possibility to appraise the soundness of tunnel with applications SASW.

  • Recently, surface-wave methods have been widely used for site investigation due to economic advantage and improved reliability. Specially, the Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Wave (SASW) method has been used to evaluate soil properties in geotechnical engineering. In determination of subgrade stiffness by SASW measurements, only the vertical Rayleigh waves have been used. This study proposed a framework to determine shear-wave velocity profiles by using vertical and horizontal Rayleigh waves and Love wave all together. In addition, the Common-Array-Profiling(CAP) SASW method was employed, which subgrade stiffness of profile the local material under two fixed receivers. The procedure proposed in this study was verified by comparing the shear-wave velocity profiles with the shear-wave velocity profiles of downhole testing at two geotechnical sites.

  • For free surface flow problem, a high-order spectral/boundary element method is adapted as an efficient numerical tool. This method is one of the most efficient numerical methods by which the nonlinear gravity waves can be simulated and hydrodynamic forces also can be calculated in time domain. In this method, the velocity potential is expressed as the sum of surface potential and body potential. Then, surface potential is solved by using the high-order spectral method and body potential is solved by using the high-order boundary element method. Using the combination of these two methods, the free surface flow problems of a submerged moving body are solved in time domain. In the present study, lifting surface theory is added to the former work to include effects of lift force. Therefore, a new formulation for the basic mathematical theory is introduced to contain the lift body in calculation.

  • Time series of suspended sediment concentration, surface elevation and velocity were measured and analysed to investigate the role of waves and the predominance of infra-gravity wave component for sediment suspension phenomena in the surf zone. For the investigation in detail, we adopted the cross spectral analysis method between suspended sediment concentration and the characteristic values of wave, and ensemble average analysis method about long-period wave component, which is dominant to sediment suspension in the measurement point. The obtained results are summarized as follows: 1)The relationship between suspended sediment concentration and the characteristic values of wave is stronger for the long-period standing wave components(about 60s and 30s where the nodal point of the first mode and the anti-nodal point of the second mode are located at the measurement point, respectively) than the long wave components(about 100s), which have the most energetic power, 2) and also, it is cleared that suspended sediment concentration is increased in the case of the phase, the velocity components of the first mode long-period standing wave(60sec) were accelerated toward on-shore direction, that is, the water surface in offshore side is higher than on-shore side.

  • Surface wave (SW) surveys, which have been applied to numerous application fields ranging from micro-scale ultrasonic analysis to geological scale analysis, are widely used to monitor near-surface stability. The survey method is basically made through analysis on dispersion of SW propagating along the earth surface, in order to delineate shear velocity structure of subsurface. SW survey data are inverted with assuming one-dimensional (1D) layered-earth in order to recover shear wave velocities of each layer, after being analyzed to make the dispersion curve that shows phase velocity of SW with respect to frequency. This study reviews surface wave surveys with explaining the basic theory including the characteristics of dispersion and the procedure of general data processing. Even though surface wave surveys can be categorized into active and passive methods, this paper focuses only on active surface wave methods which includes continuous SW (CSW), spectral analysis of SW (SASW) and multichannel analysis of SW (MASW). Passive method will be reviewed in the subsequent paper.

  • In this study, we introduce a linear spectral method capable of simulating wave generation and transformation caused by a moving bottom in a 3-dimensional space. The governing equations are linear dynamic free-surface boundary conditions and linear kinematic free-surface boundary conditions, which are solved in Fourier space. Solved velocity potential and free-surface displacement should satisfy continuity equation and kinematic bottom boundary condition. For numerical analysis, a 4th order Runge-Kutta method was utilized to analyze the time integral. The results obtained in Fourier space can be converted into velocity potential and free-surface displacement in a real space using inverse Fourier transform. Regular waves generated by various types of moving bottoms were simulated with the linear spectral method. Additionally, obliquely generated regular waves using specified bottom movements were simulated. The results obtained from the spectral method were compared to analytical solutions, showing good agreement between the two.

  • This paper presents the results of seakeeping tests in a container ship model in irregular head waves. A time domain signal generating procedure is devised so that the wave maker behaves in accordance with the specified wave spectrum. The surface elevation of generated waves is measured and analysed to render the recorded wave spectrum for comparison with the specified one. Correction is made to the time domain signal until the differences between the two spectra become negligible. The motion responses and vertical acceleration of the self-propelled ship model are measured and analysed by both the spectral and the double amplitude methods. The two methods give nearly same statistical values. Finally the recorded spectra are compared with those calculated from the frequency domain motion analysis to show the credibility of the experimental results.

  • Shear wave velocity, one of major elastic constants in the dynamic design for civil structures, is conventionally measured from downhole, crosshole or sonic logging tests. SASW (Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves) method, which overcomes the disadvantage of the in-hole tests, can evaluate subsurface stiffness nondestructively and nonintrusively through measuring surface waves on surface. In this paper, principles of the SASW method are briefly described and the results of various field tests, conducted to investigate the applicability of the method, are summarized. The SASW method was successfully applied in evaluating the effects of dynamic compaction at Inchon international airport site, applied in evaluating the integrity of the lining and sidewall at a testing tunnel located in Mabukri, and applied in detecting thickness of a concrete retaining wall. The results of field tests and the nondestructive and economical characteristics of the method show the promising future of the SASW method in civil engineering projects.

  • The Spectral Analysis of surface Waves(SASW) Method has a great has a great potential for rapid determination of shear wave velocity profile of ground. However, it has an inherent limitation in the interpretation of test results due to the assumption that the ground is layered horizontally. The reason of the assumption is that difficulties exist in obtaining analytical solutions of wave equation when a soil system is composed of inclined soil layer. In this study, a finite-element method has been employed to assess the effects of dip angle and stiffness contrast of inclined soil layers and the testing direction on the dispersion curve. The propagation of wave front in the inclined soil layer was also investigated. The results indicated that the influence of dip angle on the dispersion curve is getting obvious as the dip angle increases and the propagation of wave front in the inclined layer also entirely different compared with the case of the horizontal layer.
