  • An existing infrared (IR) analysis system is generally composed of infrared source, IR focusing lenses, IR detector, and optical chopper. An optical chopper is widely used in combination with lock-in amplifier to improve the signal-to-noise ratio by periodically interrupting incident light beam. During recent years, a few researches on miniaturized optical chopper have been reported to apply to micro-scaled optical systems. In this paper, a micro optical chopper operated by electromagnetic actuation is proposed and applied to a miniaturized micro-scaled optical system operating in IR spectral range. Additionally, the fabrication method of the proposed micro chopper is demonstrated. The proposed micro optical chopper is composed of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane, solenoid, and permanent magnet. The permanent magnet is bonded on the PDMS membrane using an ultraviolet-activated adhesive. The operation of the chopper is based on the attractive and repulsive forces between permanent magnet and solenoid induced by an electrical current flowing through the solenoid. The fabricated micro optical chopper could operate up to 200 Hz of frequency. The maximum operating distance of the chopper with 7mm diameter membrane was $750{\mu}m$ at 100 Hz of frequency.

  • Many signals in the nature have power-law behaviors, namely they are "scale-free". The method of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), as one of the popular methods (e.g., Rescaled range analysis and Spectral analysis) for determining scale-free nature of time series, has a very important advantage that the DFA can be applied to both stationary and non-stationary signals. The analysis of time series using the DFA has been broadly used in physiology, finance, hydrology, meteorology, geology, and so on. We performed the DFA of 16 Spaceweather HMI Active Region Patch (SHARP) parameters for 38 HMI Active Region Patches (HARPs) obtained by Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from May 2010 to June 2014. The main results from this study are as follows. (1) The most of the time series data are non-stationary. (2) The DFA scaling exponents of "mean vertical current density" for 38 HARPs have a negative correlation coefficient (-0.41) with flare index. (3) The DFA scaling exponents of parameters such as "Sum of the absolute value of net currents per polarity", "Absolute value of the net current helicity", and "Mean photospheric excess magnetic energy density" for the most active HARPs having more than 10 major flares, have positive correlation coefficients (0.64, 0.59, and 0.53, respectively) with the ratio of "the number of CMEs associated with major flares" to "the number of major flares". Physical interpretations on our results will be discussed.

  • Chemical evolution of galaxies can be understood by studying the spatial distribution of heavy elements. We selected two nearby galaxies, M31 and M33 and investigated spectrum of their HII regions: a) the elec-tron densities have been derived from the [S II] 6717/6731 ratio along with the most recent atomic constants (Hyung & Aller 1996); b) the electron temperatures were determinated from the Pagel's empirical method. Nebula Model (Hyung 1994) has been employed to predict the spectral line intensities which gives the proper chemical abundances. The model would predict the line intensities correctly only when various input parameters such as the effective central star temperatures, gravity log g, model atmosphere as well as the geometry and the nebula physical condition are appropriate. Thus, the determination of chemical abundances of O, S, N of the two nearby galaxies M31 and M33 has been done, which shows a radial dependance of O/H and N/H: decrease with the distance, or increasing electron temperature due to the elemental deficiency. Abundances of M31 appear to be enhanced than those of M33.

  • Type I AGNs are classified by the presence of broad emission lines while Type II AGNs show narrow emission lines only. All-sky surveys such as SDSS provide large AGN samples for statistical studies. However, the AGN samples suffer selection bias due to the incomplete selection criteria. To investigate the missing Type I AGNs in optical spectroscopic surveys, we start with a sample of SDSS Type II AGNs at 0.02 < z < 0.05, using the MPA-JHU SDSS DR7 catalog. We search for the hidden broad $H{\alpha}$ component with both visual inspection and the multi-component spectral decomposition method. Out of 1383 Type II AGNs, we find a total of 62 missing Type I AGNs (~4.5%). The sample has mean black hole mass, log $(M_{BH}/M_{SUN))=6.48{\pm}0.53$, and luminosity, log $(L_{H{\alpha}}/ergs^{-1})=40.52{\pm}0.33$, with Eddington ratio, log $(L_{bol}/L_{Edd})=-1.51{\pm}0.41$. We will describe the sample and present the $M_{BH}-{\sigma}_*$, and $M_{BH}-M_*$ relations of the sample in the context of the BH-galaxy coevolution.

  • OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) modulation using the orthogonal subcarriers reduces the delay spread by increasing robustness to multipath fading and can use overlapped bandwidth due to orthogonality on frequency domain. Thus data rate and spectral efficiency are increased. Because of these reason, OFDM is used for high speed data transmission for multimedia transmission as HSDPA, WiBro, WLAN. However OFDM also has drawbacks that have the high PAPR (Peak to Average Power Ratio). This high PAPR takes place because of parallel processing a number of data at once using a FFT processor. By high PAPR, amplifier doesn't act in dynamic range, so that BER performance is worse. In this paper, we reduce the PAPR using SLM(Selective Mapping). SLM doesn't effect on BER performance, but should transmit the side information for demodulation [2]. Also PAPR is higher as the number of FFT processor is larger. Thus SLM has high complexity. In this paper, we analyze the performance of SLM using scaling for no side information.

  • The stochiometric mix of evaporating materials for the $ZnGa_2Se_4$ single crystal thin films were prepared from horizental furnace. The polycrystal structure obtaind from the power x-ray diffraction was defect chalcopyrite. The lattice costants $a_0\;and\;c_0\;were\;a_0=5.51\;A,\;c_0=10.98\;A$. To obtains the single crystal thin films, $ZnGa_2Se_4$ mixed crystal were deposited on throughly etched Si(100) by the Hot Wall Epitaxy (HWE) system. The temperates of the source and the substrate were $590^{\circ}C\;and\;450^{\circ}C$, respectively. The crystalline structure of single crystal thin films was investigated by the double crystal X-ray diffraction(DCXD). Hall effect on this sample was measured by the method of van der Pauw and studied on carrier density and mobility dependence on temperature. In order to explore the applicability as a photoconductive cell, we measured the sensitivity($\gamma$), the ratio of photocurrent to dark current(pc/dc), maximum allowable rower dissipation(MAPD), spectral response and response time.

  • In this study, a space-time transmission scheme is proposed to tackle the limitations of channel estimation with orthogonal pilot information in colocated multiple-input multiple-output systems with several transmitting and receiving antennas. Channel information is obtained using orthogonal pilots. Channel estimation introduces pilot heads required to estimate a channel. This leads to bandwidth insufficiency. As a result, trade-offs exist between the number of pilots required to estimate a channel versus spectral efficiency. The detection of data symbols is performed using the maximum likelihood decoding method as it provides a consistent approach to parameter estimation problems. The moment-generating function of the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio is used to drive an approximate expression of the symbol error rate for the proposed scheme. Furthermore, the order of diversity is less by one than the number of receiver antennas used in the proposed scheme. The effect of the length of a pilot sequence on the proposed scheme's performance is also investigated.

  • This paper proposes a new masking threshold adjustment strategy to improve the performance for speech signals in low bit-rate audio coding. After determining formant regions, the masking threshold is adjusted by using the energy ratio of each sub-band to the average energy of each formant. More quantization noises are added to the bands that have relatively large energy, but less distortion is allowed in spectral valley regions by allocating more bits, which reflects the concept of perceptual weighting widely used in speech coding. From the results of objective speech quality measure, we verified that the proposed method improves quality for the speech input signals compared to the conventional one.

  • In this study, the ground motion was synthesized using the finite fault model by the stochastic green function method, and the difference in the ground motions was evaluated by using various values of the source parameters. An earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.5 was assumed for the example fault model. The distribution of the slip in the fault plane was calculated using the statistical data of the asperity area. The source parameters considered in this study were the location of the hypocenter in the fault plane and the ratio of the rupture to the shear wave velocity, the rise time, the corner frequency of the source spectrum, and a high frequency filter. The values of the parameters related to the stochastic element source model were adjusted for different tectonic regions, and the others were selected for several possible cases. The response spectra were constructed from the synthesized ground motion time history and compared with the different parameter values. The frequency range affected by each parameter and the differences of the spectral accelerations were evaluated.
