  • Albedo is one of the critical parameters for understanding global climate change and energy/water balance. In this study, we used red and NIR reflectance from Satellite Pour I'Obervation de la Terre (SPOT)/Vegetation (VGT) S1 product. The product is preprocessed for users that they are atmospherically corrected using Simple Method Atmospheric Correction (SMAC) by Vision on Technology (VITO) for calculating broadband albedo. Roujean's Bi-directional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) model is a semi-empirical method used for BRDF angular integration and inversion. Each kernel of Roujean's model was multi integrated by angle components (i.e., viewing zenith, solar zenith, and relative azimuth angle). Black-sky hemispherical function is integrated by observational angle; whereas, white-sky hemispherical efficient is integrated by incident angle. Estimated spectral albedo of red ($0.61{\sim}0.68{\mu}m$, B2) and near infrared ($0.79{\sim}0.89{\mu}m$, B3) have a good agreement with MODIS albedo products.

  • Increasing of impervious surface resulting from urban development has negative impacts on urban environment. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to estimate and quantify the temporal and spatial aspects of impervious area for study of urban environment. In many cases, conventional image classification methods have been used for analysis of impervious surface fraction. However, the conventional classification methods have shortcoming in estimating impervious surface. The DN value of the each pixel in imagery is mixed result of spectral character of various objects which exist in surface. But conventional image classification methods force each pixel to be allocated only one class. And also after land cover classification, it is requisite to additional work of calculating impervious percentage value in each class item. This study used the spectral mixture analysis to overcome this weakness of the conventional classification methods. Four endmembers, vegetation, soil, low albedo and high albedo were selected to compose pure land cover objects. Impervious surface fraction was estimated by adding low albedo and high albedo. The study area is the Tanchon watershed which has been rapidly changed by the intensive development of housing. Landsat imagery from 1988, 1994 to 2001 was used to estimate impervious surface fraction. The results of this study show that impervious surface fraction increased from $15.6\%$ in 1988, $20.1\%$ in 1994 to $24\%$ in 2001. Results indicate that impervious surface fraction can be estimated by spectral mixture analysis with promising accuracy.

  • Laboratory tests have been carried out for investigation of the spectroscopic characteristics at visible wavelength of 12 common satellite materials used in satellite bus and payload. The obtained spectral data show that the materials can be classified and identified since their spectral features and albedos distinctly differ among them. It is suggested that the result of the laboratory tests for the satellite materials can be used for the predictions of material types, material composition ratios, sizes, and masses in comparison with the spectral data obtained from observations of new satellites or space debris.

  • We have performed the calculation of total radiances for the KOMPSAT-2 Multispectral Camera (MSC) using a radiative transfer model of MODTRAN and examined its results. To simulate four seasonal conditions in the model calculation, we used model atmospheres of mid-latitude winter and summer for calculations of January 15 and July 15, and US standard for April 15 and October 15, respectively. Orbital parameters of KOMPSAT-2 and the seasonal solar zenith angles were taken into account. We assumed that the meteorological range is the tropospheric aerosol extinction of 50 km and surface albedo is the global average of clear-sky albedo of 0.135. MSC contract values are found to be considerably greater in the MSC spectral range than the total radiances calculated with the above general conditions. It is also shown that the spectral behavior of model results with the constant surface albedo differs from the pattern of MSC contract values. From these results, it can be inferred that the forthcoming MSC images would be somewhat dark.

  • AVHRR(Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) on NOAA satellite provides data in five spectral, one in visible range, one in near infrared and three in thermal range. In this paper, application of NOAA/AVHRR data is studied for environment monitoring such as cloud top temperature, surface temperature, albedo, sea surface temperature, vegetation index, forest fire, flood, snow cover and so on. The analyses for cloud top temperature, surface temperature, albedo, sea surface temperature, vegetation index and forest fire showed reasonable agreement. But monitoring for flood and snow cover was uneasy due to the limitations such as cloud contamination, low spatial resolution. So this research had only simple purpose to identify well-defined waterbody for dynamic monitoring of flood. Based on development of these basic algorithms, we have a plan to further reseach for environment monitoring using AVHRR data.

  • We present a retrieval scheme for the remote sensing of evapotranspiration (ET) over rice paddy. To perform the retrieval, high-resolution airborne imagery of multi-spectral visible and thermal infrared data, and ground-based meteorological measurements are utilized. Our ET retrieval scheme is based on the basic principal of surface energy budget, which is a result of balance in longwave and shortwave radiation, latent heat, sensible heat, and energy flux into the ground. To partition the latent and sensible heat fluxes of interest from the energy balance equation, three basic parameters are of most concern, including albedo, surface temperature, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The NDVI and albedo can be easily derived from the visible and near infrared spectral data, while the surface tem-perature can be determined through the analysis of the infrared data with the Stefan Boltzmann law. From the airborne imagery taken on 28 April 2003, we observe very good dry and wet pixels that can be easily corre-sponded to the radiation and evaporation controlled crite-ria, respectively, and, hence, for the further use in defin-ing the evaporative fraction needed to partition sensible and latent heat fluxes from the net energy flux. The de-rived ET is compared with the in situ measurements.

  • It is considered that comets near the ecliptic plane have been injected into inner solar system from Kuiper-belt. Some of them are still active while others are dormant with no detectable tails and comae. These dormant comets have eccentric and/or inclined orbits, which are parameterized by Tisserand parameter TJ<3. In addition, dormant comets can be differentiated from asteroids based on the albedo, because they have low albedo (the geometrical albedos pv<0.1). The conditions of TJ<3 and pv<0.1 have been used as a criteria to discriminate dormant comets from asteroids. However, we must be more careful because there are 'contaminations' from the outer region, i.e. Jovian Trojans (5.05

  • In order to clarify the impact of variation of albedo on the atmospheric boundary layer caused by the density of building in urban areas, both satellite data analysis and numerical experiments were carried out. Utilized satellite data were multi-spectral visible data detected by the Korea Multi- Purpose Satellite -2 (KOMSAT-2), and the numerical models for the estimation of surface heat budget are Albedo Calculation Model (ACM) and Oregon State University Planetary Boundary Layer model (OSUPBL). In satellite data analysis, the estimated albedo in densely populated building area is lower than other regions by 17% at the maximum due to the shadow effect of skyscraper buildings. The surface temperature reached $43.5^{\circ}C$ in the highly dense and tall building area and $37.4^{\circ}C$ in the coarse density area of low buildings, respectively. However, the low albedo in densely integrated building area is not directly related to the increase of surface air temperature since the mechanical turbulence induced by the roughness of buildings is more critical in its impact than the decrease of albedo.

  • Spatial distribution of atmosphereless bodies in the solar system provides an important clue as to their origins, namely asteroids from Mainbelt or comets from outer solar system. It is, however, difficult to distinguish asteroids and dormant comets due to their similar appearances. In this study, we conducted a unique observation to differentiate asteroids and dormant comets in terms of 'polarimetry'. We observed (331471) 1984 QY1 (hereafter QY1) at large phase angles using the Multi-Spectral Imager (MSI) on the 1.6-m Pirka Telescope from UT 2016 May 25 to June 24. QY1 is a dormant comet candidate in terms of the dynamical properties (i.e. the Tisserand parameter with respect to Jupiter, TJ = 2.68). We analyzed the polarization degree of QY1 as a function of phase angle and found its maximum polarization degree, $Pmax=8.68{\pm}0.28%$ and $8.72{\pm}0.38%$, in RC-and V-band, respectively, around the phase angle of ${\alpha}=100^{\circ}$. In addition, we obtained the geometric albedo, $pV=0.16{\pm}0.02$ by means of an empirical slope-albedo law. The polarimetric properties and the albedo value we acquired are similar to those of S-type asteroids rather than cometary nuclei. In this presentation, we introduce our observation and findings. In addition, we further discuss a dynamical transportation process from Mainbelt to the current orbit.

  • We performed three-dimensional Monte Carlo dust scattering radiative transfer simulations for FUV light to obtain dust scattered FUV images and compared them with the observed FUV image obtained by FIMS/SPEAR and GALEX. From this, we find the scattering properties of interstellar dust in our Galaxy and suggest the intensity of extragalactic background light (EBL) at FUV wavelength. The best-fit values of the scattering properties of interstellar dust are albedo = 0.38-0.04+0.04, g-factor = 0.55-0.15+0.10, and EBL = 138-23+21 CU for the allsky which are consistent well with the Milky Way dust model of Draine and direct measurements of Gardner et al., respectively. At the high Galactic latitude of |b|>10°, the observation is well fitted with the model of lower albedo = 0.35-0.04+0.06 and g-factor = 0.50-0.20+0.15. On the contrary, the scattering properties of interstellar dust show higher albedo = 0.43-0.02+0.02 and g-factor = 0.65-0.15+0.05 near the Galactic plane of |b|<10°. In the present simulation, recent three-dimensional distribution maps of interstellar dust in our Galaxy, stellar distances in the catalog of GAIA DR2, and FUV fluxes and/or spectral types in the TD-1 and Hipparcos star catalogs were used.
