A Case Study and Industry Demand Investigation on Technological Convergence Education Related to the 4th Industrial Revolution: Focused on Electronics, Software, and Automobile (4차 산업혁명 관련 융합기술교육에 대한 사례조사 및 산업체 수요조사: 전자, 소프트웨어, 자동차 중심의 융합교육 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate case studies and industry needs for convergence education in the fields of electronics, software, and automobiles, which are the technical foundations of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Through the literature review, the convergence education programs focusing on electronics, software, and automobile were derived. The areas were validated by the experts review who consisted of three industry experts and professors in the relevant fields. Domestic and foreign curriculum were investigated to understand the current state of technical convergence education in each field. Industry needs survey for technical convergence education was conducted in cooperation with the Sector Council of Industrial Resources. Research instruments consisted of three parts: needs for technical convergence education, needs for the specific convergence education in the field of electronics, software, and automobile, and opinions on convergence education. A total of 341 participants responded to the questionnaires: 132 in the electronic field, 100 in the software field, and 109 in the automobile field. The industry needs for convergence education were analyzed and implications were suggested. The results of this study are expected to provide a guideline for developing convergence education programs in higher education.

  • As the application of nano-satellites constellation increases worldwide in the wake of New Space era, there is growing demand for the development of thrusters for precise attitude and orbit control of small satellites. Field Emission Electric Propulsion(FEEP) thruster uses a liquid metal as a propellant and accelerates the ionized liquid metal through a strong electric field at the tip of the metal surface. FEEP thruster technology is suitable for nano-satellites which require various missions for attitude and orbit control, because it provides thrust ranging from 1 µN to 1 mN with high specific impulse up to about 10,000 s and can be miniaturized due to its simple structure. In this paper, the basics of FEEP thrusters are introduced, then the current status of research and development of FEEP thrusters are presented.

A Comparative Analysis of Research Trends in the Information and Communication Technology Field of South and North Korea Using Data Mining

  • The purpose of this study is to compare research trends in the information and communication technology (ICT) field between North and South Korea and analyze the differences by using data mining. Frequency analysis, clustering, and network analysis were performed using keywords from seven South Korean and two North Korean ICT academic journals published for five years (2015-2019). In the case of South Korea (S. Korea), the frequency of research on image processing and wireless communication was high at 16.7% and 16.3%, respectively. North Korea (N. Korea) had a high frequency of research, in the order of 18.2% for image processing, 16.9% for computer/Internet applications/security, and 16.4% for industrial technology. N. Korea's natural language processing (NLP) sector was 11.9%, far higher than S. Korea's 0.7 percent. Student education is a unique subject that is not clustered in S. Korea. In order to promote exchanges between the two Koreas in the ICT field, the following specific policies are proposed. Joint research will be easily possible in the image processing sector, with the highest research rate in both Koreas. Technical cooperation of medical images is required. If S. Korea's high-quality image source is provided free of charge to N. Korea, research materials can be enriched. In the field of NLP, it calls for proposing exchanges such as holding a Korean language information conference, developing a Korean computer operating system. The field of student education encourages support for remote education contents and management know-how, as well as joint research on student remote evaluation.

Influence of Site-specific Fertilizer Application Using GPS and Digital Fertility Map on Rice Yield and Quality (전자지도 이용 변량시비가 쌀 수량 및 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of site-specific variable fertilization following digital fertility map generated from soil analysis on rice growth and yield. The site-specific application of fertilizer was implemented by using rice transplanter equipped with side dressing applicator and global positioning system (GPS). Coefficient of variation (C.V.) of soil nitrogen content was reduced after the experiment, and spatial variation of semivariogram was reduced. Rice growth from tillering to ripening stage, plant height, tiller and panicle number increased at site-specific variable fertilization treatment, and coefficient variation (C.V.) of each growth characteristics was lower than those of conventional fertilization treatment. As a result, fertility in the rice field was more uniform become of site-specific fertilizer application. Head rice yield of site-specific application plot increased by 9% (i.e., to from 450 kg/10a to 492 kg/10a of the control plot) and its CV was significantly reduced to 3.5 compared to 7.8 of the control plot. In addition, there was no significant difference in amylose, protein contents and whiteness of milled rice, but its CV was reduced.

Estimation of Specific Yield Using Rainfall and Groundwater Levels at Shallow Groundwater Monitoring Sites (충적층 지하수 관측지점의 강우량 대비 지하수위 변동 자료를 활용한 비산출율 추정)

  • Specific yield is an essential parameter of the water table fluctuation method for recharge calculation. Specific yield is not easily estimated because of limited availability of aquifer test data and soil samples at National Groundwater Monitoring Stations in South Korea. The linear relationship between rainfall and water level rise was used to estimate the specific yields of aquifer for 34 shallow monitoring wells which were grouped into three clusters. In the case of Cluster-1 and Cluster-2, this method was not applicable because of low cross correlation between rainfall and water level rise and also a long lag time of water level rise to rainfall. However, the specific yields for 19 monitoring wells belonging to Cluster-3, which have relatively high cross correlation and short lag time, within 2 days after rainfall, range from 0.06 to 0.27 with mean value of 0.17. These values are within the general range for sand and gravel sediments and similar to those from aquifer test data. A detailed field survey is required to identify monitoring sites that are not greatly affected by pumping, stream flow, evapotranspiration, or delayed response of water levels to rainfall, because these factors may cause overestimation of specific yield estimates.

Species-specific Marker Development for Environmental DNA Assay of Endangered Bull-head Torrent Catfish, Liobagrus obesus (멸종위기어류 퉁사리의 환경 DNA 분석을 위한 종 특이 마커 개발)

  • We wanted to develop a real-time PCR assay capable of detecting Liobagrus obesus in environmental DNA (eDNA) extracted from freshwater samples using a pair of species-specific primers and probe for the endangered fish, L. obesus. The species-specific primers and probe were designed in consideration of single nucleotide polymorphisms between 65 species of freshwater fish living in the Republic of Korea within the cytochrome b (cytb) gene of mitochondrial DNA. The species-specific primers and probe, in the real-time PCR assay, showed high specificity as only the L. obesus genomic DNA (gDNA) was found to be positive in the specificity verification using 65 species gDNA of freshwater fish in the Republic of Korea. In addition, in the detection limit analysis using the serial dilution concentrations of L. obesus gDNA, it was found that it was possible to detect up to 0.2 pg, showing high sensitivity. Afterwards, using the species-specific primers and probe, real-time PCR assay was performed on freshwater samples obtained from 8 stations in the mid-upper basin of Geum River. As a result, the cytb gene of L. obesus was detected in total 5 stations including all 3 stations where this species was collected at the time of field survey. Therefore, the species-specific primers and probe developed in present study, and the real-time PCR assay using them, can accurately detect the cytb gene of L. obesus from eDNA samples, which can be utilized to monitor the existing habitats of this species and to discover potential new habitats.

Investigation and Evaluation of Algae Removal Technologies Applied in Domestic Rivers and Lakes (국내 하천/호수에 적용된 조류저감기술의 조사 및 평가)

  • Commercial 28 algae removal technologies that have been applied in domestic rivers and lakes with green tide were investigated, analyzed and classified. The classification of algae removal technologies was based on the three criteria (i.e., principle, flow rate of water body, and application period). Also, algae removal technologies were evaluated in terms of cost effectiveness, field applicability, effect durability, and eco friendliness. From the analysis results, technologies using physical, chemical, biological, and convergent controls were 32.2%, 25%, 21.4%, and 21.4%, respectively. The 75% of technologies have been applied to stagnant water body (${\leq}0.2m/s$). Also, algae harvesting ship with dissolved air flotation, conveyor belt and filtration processes and natural floating coagulant were found to have better field applicability, compared to other technologies. However, proper algae removal technology in specific rivers and lakes should be chosen after the evaluation of long-term pilot scale field test. Also, development of energy and resource recovery technologies from algae biomass is warranted.

A Study of the Situation Based Disaster Response Model from the Damage of Storm and Flood Field Manual (풍수해 현장조치 행동매뉴얼 분석을 통한 상황 기반 재난 대응 모델 연구)

  • Purpose: The fields manuals which is managed by the each disaster types are the integrated guideline. When the disaster occurred, all kinds of SOPs which are described in the manual does not need. Therefore, the person in charge is confused which SOP is executed. In this study, we propose the disaster response process model based on the specific disaster situation case. Method: Firstly, we define the disaster situation cases which is mentioned in the field manual, and then, we develop the disaster response process model including indispensible SOPs for the specific disaster situation case. As a verification and feedback process, we apply the model to Safety Korea Exercise scenario. Result: We developed SOP model and disaster response process model reflecting the concept of the disaster situation case. Conclusion: Safety Kore Exercise scenario reflecting the developed model may continuously upgrade the field manual.

Resurrection of antibody as a therapeutic drug (항체 : 치료제로서의 부활)

  • Currently 18 monoclonal antibodies were approved by FDA for inj ection into humans for therapeutic or diagnostic purpose. And 146 clinical trials are under way to evaluate the efficacy of monoclonal antibodies as anti-cancer agents, which comprise 9 % of clinical trials in cancer therapy field. When considering a lot of disappointment and worries existed in this field during the past 15 years, this boom could be called as resurrection. Antibodies have several merits over small molecule drug. First of all it is easier and faster in development, as proper immunization of the target proteins usually raises good antibody response. The side effects of antibodies are more likely to be checked out in immunohistomchemical staining of whole human tissues. Antibody has better pharmacokinetics, which means a longer half-life. And it is non-toxic as it is purely a "natural drug. Vast array of methods was developed to get the recombinant antibodies to be used as drug. The mice with human immunoglobulin genes were generated. Fully human antibodies can be developed in fast and easy way from these mice through immunization. These mice could make even human monoclonal antibodies against any human antigen like albumin. The concept of combinatorial library was also actively adopted for this purpose. Specific antibodies can be screened out from phage, mRNA, ribosomal library displaying recombinant antibodies like single chain Fvs or Fabs. Then the coding genes of these specific antibodies are obtained from the selected protein-gene units, and used for industrial scale production. Both $na\ddot{i}ve$ and immunized libraries are proved to be effective for this purpose. In post-map arena, antibodies are receiving another spotlight as molecular probes against numerous targets screened out from functional genomics or proteomics. Actually many of these antibodies used for this purpose are already human ones. Through alliance of these two actively growing research areas, antibody would play a central role in target discovery and drug development.

  • Magnetic hyperthermia mediated by superparamagnetic particles is mainly based in sinusoidal waveforms as excitation signals. Temperature changes are conventionally explained by rotation of the particles in the surrounding medium. This is a hypothesis quite questionable since habitual experimental setups only produce changes in the magnetic module, not in the field lines trajectories. Theoretical results were tested by changing the waveform of the exciting signal in order to compare non-sinusoidal signals against sinusoidal signals. Experiments were done at different frequencies: 200 KHz, 400 KHz, 600 KHz, 800 KHz and 1 MHz. Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide samples (SPION), made of magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) and suspended in water (100 mg/ml), were used. Magnetic field strength varies from $0.1{\pm}0.015KA/m$ to $0.6{\pm}0.015KA/m$. In this study was observed that the power loss depends on the applied frequency: for 1 to 2.5 RMS current the responses for each signal are part of the higher section of the exponential function, and for 3.5 to 8 RMS current the response is clearly the decrement exponential function's tale (under $1{\times}10^3LER/gr$).
