  • Egg incubation periods of 14 species of plecoptera were examined at $10^{\circ}\;{\sim}\;11^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}\;{\sim}\;16^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $23^{\circ}C$ under dark conditions. The total effective temperature (TET) was calculated by multiplying mean egg incubation days and water temperature of incubation periods. The relation between the TET and the incubation temperature was used to compare the life cycle of respective species. Perlodid species had higher TET values with a positive relation to incubation temperature than those of other species. Perlid species had low TET values in the 14 species with negative to variable relation, and Chloroperlid species showed variable to positive relations to incubation temperature. These results suggest that the relation between the TET and the water temperature reflected on their habitat of respective species.

  • Partial sequence comparisons of mitochondrial small subunit rDNA (mt SSU rDNA) were used to examine taxonomic and evolutionary relationships among seven Penicillium species : two monoverticillate species, two biverticillate species, and three terverticillate species. Amplified fragments of mt SSU rDNA highly varied among seven species in size, suggesting the existence of multiple insertions or deletions in the region. A phylogengtic tree was constructed by exhaustive search of parsimony analysis. The phylogenetic tree distinguished two statistically supported monophyletic groups, one for two monoverticillate species and the other for three terverticillate species and ont biverticillate species, P. vulpinum. The phylogenetic relationship of P. waksmanii, the biverticillate species, was not clear.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop prediction models for plant species abundance by stream restoration. Generally the stream plant is affected by stream gemophology. So in this study, the relationship between the vegetation abundance and stream gemophology was developed by multiple regression analysis. The stream characteristics utilized in this study were longitudinal slope, transectional slope, micro-landforms through the longitudinal direction, riparian width and geometric mean diameter and biggest diameter of bed material, and cumulated coarse and fine sand weight portion. The Pyungchang River with mountainous watershed and the Kyungan stream and the Bokha stream in the agricultural region were selected and vegetation species abundance and stream characteristics were documented from the site at 2~3km intervals from the upper stream to the lower. The Models for predicting the vegetation abundance were developed by multiple regression analysis using SPSS statistics package. The linear relationship between the dependant(species abundance) and independant(stream characteristics) variables was tested by a graphical method. Longitudinal and transectional slope had a nonlinear relationship with species abundance. In the next step, the independance between the independant variables was tested and the correlation between independant and dependant variables was tested by the Pearson bivariate correlation test. The selected independant variables were transectional slope, riparian width, and cumulated fine sand weight portion. From the multiple regression analysis, the $R^2$for the Pyungchang river, Kyungan stream, Bokga stream were 0.651, 0.512 and 0.240 respectively. The natural stream configuration in the Pyungchang river had the best result and the lower $R^2$for Kyunan and Bokha stream were due to human impact which disturbed the natural ecosystem. The lowest $R^2$for the Bokha stream was due to the shifting sandy bed. If the stream bed is fugitive, the prediction model may not be valid. Using the multiple regression models, the vegetation abundance could be predicted with stream characteristics such as, transection slope, riaparian width, cumulated fine sand weigth portion, after stream restoration.

  • From April 2009 to October 2011, we surveyed the higher fungi in the Byeonsanbando National Park, Korea. In total, we identified 2 kingdoms, 3 divisions, 7 classes, 22 orders, 63 families, 149 genera, and 313 species (including 6 undocumented taxa: 2 families, 2 genera, and 2 species). Seventeen 17 orders, 49 families, 128 genera, and 286 species belonged to Basidiomycota; 7 orders, 9 families, 15 genera, and 21 species were of Ascomycota; and 4 orders, 5 families, 6 genera, and 6 species of primordial fungi. Among the Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes were represented by 47 families, 126 genera, and 282 species. The most common fungi were Boletaceae (33 species), followed by Russulaceae (30), Agaricaceae (27), and Amanitaceae (24). Various species of most of the higher fungi occurred during periods with average temperatures of $23{\sim}24.9^{\circ}C$, maximum temperatures of $28{\sim}31.9^{\circ}C$, minimum temperatures of $22{\sim}22.9^{\circ}C$, > 82% relative humidity, and > 200 mm precipitation.

  • Three hardwood (ash, alder and black locust) and three softwood (Japanese red pine, radiata pine and Western hemlock) specimens were dried in microwave(MlW) oven and their drying rates were obtained. Their specific permeabilities were also measured by using a modified liquid permeability measuring device. The correlation between the M/W drying rates and permeabilities of six species were statistically analyzed. It was revealed that within a species there is a logarithmic relationship between the M/W drying rates and average moisture contents and that among species there is a linear relationship between the M/W maximum drying rates and the average specific permeabilities. A exception was Western hemlock, which was of low permeability and of high drying rate. A Me-time equation, which showed a good agreement with the actual data, was derived. Thus using this equation the moisture contents of wood and the drying end points of M/W drying could be predicted. Infrared images of the thermal distribution in wood were illustrated.

  • The distribution pattern of species richness was determined by temperature. To examine the relationship between hemipteran richness and temperature, hemipteran species were collected using pitfall traps at six different oak forest sites with different annual mean temperatures in South Korea. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted with mean annual temperature (MAT) and plant richness to evaluate differences in hemipteran richness. The influences of MAT and plant richness of study sites on hemipteran richness were examined by comparing three models (plant richness+MAT+MAT2, plant richness+MAT, and MAT) or two models (plant richness+MAT and MAT). Hemipteran richness showed an inverse diversity pattern as a function of temperature, with higher species richness at lower temperature sites. Meanwhile, Aphididae showed a bell-shaped diversity pattern with the highest value at low medium temperatures. The regression analysis showed that hemipteran richness was affected by temperature and plant richness in their habitats.

  • This study was carried out in each three study areas of Pinus densiflora community and Quercus mongolica community from March 5th, 2008 to October 15th, 2010 to analyze the relationship between seed bank and the actual vegetation of the lower layer. Based on the relationship between the lower layer of actual vegetation and the germination of seed bank, all of three study areas, the similarity of the actual vegetation of the lower layer and seed bank were high in Plot 1 (84.62%) and Plot 3 (89.91%). As for Quercus mongolica community, the similarity was high between the actual vegetation of the lower layer and seed bank in Plot 4 (82.24%) and Plot 6 (89.47%). Especially, the germination of the pine seed banks in the Pinus densiflora community compared to other tree species appeared in all. In Quercus mongolica community, Quercus mongolica did not appear among the seeds germinated in the seek bank, but the other tree species constituting the under layer of the community. In case of the restoration based on the actual vegetation, it is desirable to sue the lower layer of vegetation as the model for the making of its alternatives for restoration works of the species.

  • Typhula ishikariensis Imai is a causal agent of Typhula snow mold, one of the most important turfgrass diseases in northern regions of the United States. Within Wisconsin isolates, there are three district groups clustered with known isolates of T. ishikariensis var. ishikariensis, var. canadensis and var. idahoensis as identified by RAPD markers. To further investigate the genetic relationship among these groups (varieties), monokaryon-monokaryon and dikaryon-monokaryon mating experiments were conducted. Mating types from var. ishikariensis, var. canadensis and var. idahoensis isolates were paired in all possible combinations. Pairings between var. canadensis and var. idahoensis were highly compatible, while no compatibility was detected between var. ishikariensis and either var. canadensis or var. idahoensis. These results indicate that var. ishikariensis is genetically separated from var. canadensis and var. idahoensis, whereas var. canadensis and var. idahoensis appeared to be genetically related to each other as a taxonomic unit. In the genetic relationship with the known biological species, var. ishikariensis and var. canadensis were genetically related to biological species I and II, respectively. However, var. idahoensis was not compatible with any of the biological species, suggesting that the pathogen may be in the process of biological speciation from var. canadensis.
