These studies were conducted to compare the external morphologies of 15 species of land snails in 8 genera of family Bradybaenidae in Korea. Principal component analyses of 15 species can be divided into five groups based on the morphological characters and the result of cluster analyses were in accord with the principal component analyses. The morphological intraspecific similarity of Nesiohelix samarangae of Mitan and Cheju population(S=0.999) proved to be highest. The degree of interspecific similarity between Aegista(Plectotropis)divesa and Aegista(plectotropis)quelpartensis(S=0.970)were more similar than the other interspecies.

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was used to determine the genetic relationships among seventeen species of the Acanthopanax species. The DNA isolated from the leaves of the samples was used as template in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with twenty random decamer primers in order to distinguish plant subspecies at the level of their genomes. The RAPD patterns were compared by calculating pairwise distances using Dice similarity index, and produced to the genetic similarity dendrogram by unweighted pair-group method arithmetic averaged (UPGMA) analysis, showing three groups; a major cluster(twelve species), minor cluster (4 species) and single-clustering species. The results of RAPD were compatible with the morphological classification, as well as the chemotaxonomic classification of the Acanthopanax species. The Acanthopanax species containing 3,4-seco-lupane type triterpene compounds in their leaves corresponded to the major cluster, another species having oleanane or normal lupane type constituents to minor clusters, and one species not containing triterpenoidal compound to single-cluster.
This study was conducted to provide basic data for habitat management and preservation of Jeongmaek. A total of 18 priority research areas were selected with consideration to terrain and habitat environment, and 54 fixed plots were selected for three types of habits: development, valley, and forest road and ridge. The survey was conducted in each season (May, August, and October), excluding the winter season, from 2016 to 2018. The distribution analysis of birds observed in each habitat type using a self-organizing map (SOM) classified them into a total of four groups (MRPP, A=0.12, and p <0.005). The comparative analysis of the number of species, the number of individuals, and the species diversity index for each SOM group showed that they were all the highest in group III (Kruskal-Wallis, the number species: x2 = 13.436, P <0.005; the number of individuals: x2 = 8.229, P <0.05; the species diversity index: x2 = 17.115, P <0.005). Moreover, the analysis by applying the land cover map to the random forest model to examine the index species of each group and identify the characteristics of the habitat environment showed a difference in the ratio of the habitat environment and the indicator species among the four groups. The index species analysis identified a total of 18 bird species as the indicator species in three groups except for group II. When applying the random forest model and indicator species analysis to the results of classification into four groups using the SOM, the composition of the indicator species by the group showed a correlation with the habitat characteristics of each group. Moreover, the distribution patterns and densities of observed species were clearly distinguished according to the dominant habitat for each group. The results of the analysis that applied the SOM, indicator species, and random forest model together can derive useful results for the characterization of bird habitats according to the habitat environment.
Pinus densiflora stands are common secondary forest communities on infertile soils in Korea. The stands are results of long severe past biotic pressure such as cutting, burning and grazing. These could be regarded as biotic climax in Korea. Because of their prevalent occurrence, relatively simple species and age composition, and their domestic economic importance, study of their distributional patterns may give some basic knowledge for better utilization of land resources in Korea. To detect distributional patterns and interspecific associations ten pine stands, each of which was homogenious with respect to topography and physiognomy, were subjectively selected from pine stands in Kyunggi Province near Seoul in 1969 and were made object of this study. Four contiguous systematic samples of count for trees, shrubs and seedlings from belt transects were collected from homogeneous areas within ten natural pine stands. The belt transect was 64m or 128m in length, and 1m, 2m or 4m in width. Basic units within the transect ranged from 64 to 256. The data from the contiguous transects were analysed in terms of multiple split-plot experiment. Departure from randomness of stem distribution, i.e., pattern, was tested in terms of variance mean ratio. For the detection of association between species, correlation coefficient was calculated for different block sizes. The values of ${\gamma}$ were tested by the usual t-test. Fine trees within one of the stands showed significant regular distribution through out the blocks. Within other eight stands pines were randomly distributed at basic unit with 4$\times$4m, 2$\times$2m, 2$\times$1m and 1$\times$1m. One significantly clumped distribution at basic unit 2$\times$2m, however, was observed from one of the pine stands. These randomly distributed groups were themselves significantly regularly distributed throughout the blocks for four pine stands. For the other four pine stands, in addition to the random distribution at the basie unit(the primary random group), randomly distributed groups with 32m dimension(the secondary random groups) were also observed. Both the primary and the secondary random groups were significantly regularly distributed at the rest of blocks. Pine seedlings were not distributed randomly thoughout the blocks. Within three of the ten stands they were contagiously distributed. Important shrub species underneath pines such as Querus serrata, Q. acutissima, Leapedeza intermedia, Rhododendron Yedoense var. poukhanenae, Juniperus utilis, Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum shnwed consistently similar distributional pattern with the pine at each stand. The shrub species pairs; Rhododendron Yedoense var. poukhanenae/Quercus serrata, Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum/Lespedeza intermedia were significantly negatively associated from 1m to 4m dimensional block sizes but became significantly positively associated from 8m sized blocks on. On the other hand the shrub species pairs; Lespedeza intermedia/Robinia Pseudoacacia, and Lespedeza bicolor var, japonica/Lespedeza intermedia were also significnalty negatively associated from 1m to 8m sized blocks but became significantly positively associated from 16m sized blocks on. The associational pattern between Rhododendron mucronul tun var. poukhanenae and Lespedeza intermedia was not consistent throughout the stands. In some stands negative associations were observed throughout the blocks except NS 32. From these observatons micro-edaphic variation within the pine stands seems not to be great enough to cause distributinal difference of pine trees within the ten pine stands. Among each species and pine seedings, however, the edaphic variation within the pine stands may be great enought to cause distributional variation.
This study investigated the exotic mammals introduced to Korea to present the basic data necessary for ecological risk assessment and the establishment of an alien species management database. For this purpose, a list of alien mammals introduced to Korea was established by investigating alien mammals introduced for zoo exhibits purposes, alien mammals in breeding environments traded between individuals, and alien mammals introduced into nature. A total of 163 taxa were identified as alien mammals introduced to Korea. There were 139 taxonomic groups of ornamental alien mammals, including 11 orders, 44 families, 129 species and 10 subspecies; 28 taxonomic groups of alien mammals traded between individuals, including five orders and 19 families; and eight taxonomic groups of alien mammals introduced into nature, including four orders, seven families, seven species, and one subspecies. For the effective management of alien mammals introduced to Korea, it is important to collect basic information, such as a list of all species introduced, their populations, and introduced areas. It is also necessary to apply proactive management policies according to the degree of potential risk by preemptively evaluating the ecological risks that may arise from the introduction of alien species into natural ecosystems. For the eight taxonomic groups of Capra hircus, Cervus nippon taiouanus, Felis catus, Myocastor coypus, Oryctolagus cuniculus, Ondatra zibethicus, Ovis aries, and Rattus norvegicus identified to be introduced into the natural ecosystem of Korea, the provision of proliferation control measures at the national level, continuous monitoring of changes in diffusion trends, and immediate response based on the degree of change are required.
The family Trogossitidae Latreille occurs worldwide, including some Pacific islands. The family contains about 50 genera and 600 described species, and the group was recently classified by Kolibáč into three subfamilies, Lophocaterinae, Peltinae and Trogossitinae. Among the lophocaterine genera, a genus Ancyrona Reitter includes 62 species in most parts of the world except the Nearctic region, and is divided into five informal species groups by Kolibáč. In this study, the genus Ancyrona and its a single species, A. diversa (Pic), is newly reported in the Korean fauna. A diagnosis, habitus photographs, and illustrations of female diagnostic characters are provided, with a key to Palaearctic species of the genus Ancyrona.
Sequences of ribosomal internal transcribed spaces (ITS) obtained from two Antrobia species and two related species were compared to investigate intrageneric and intergeneric phylogenetic relationships of Antrodia. The results showed that Antrodia species causing a brown rot in wood did not form a monophyletic clade and were separated into three distinct groups. Antrodia gossypina and A. vaillantii formed a clade having rhizomorphs as a homologous character. Antrodia serialis, A. sinuosa, and A. malicola formed a group together with Daedalea, Fomitopsis, and Postia species with brown rot habit. Antrodia xantha with a trimitic hyphal system and amyloid skeletal hyphae formed another distinct clade form other Antrodia species. The Antrodia species were separated from white rot genera such as Antrodiella, Diplomitoporus, Junghuhnia, and Steccherinum, indicating the phylogenetic importance of the rot type in the classification of the Polyporaceae.
Soluble protein of the eight species of the Drosophila melanogaster species group was analyzed for three developmental stages of lanra, pupa and adult by 2DE. Genetic distances were calculated by Aquadro and Aviso's equation for three developmental stages, respectively. The dendrosrams showed the same patterns in three stages. The dendrograms showed that the melonogaster species group consisted of two clustered groups. Total soluble protein contents on three developmental stages of the eight species were compared. Closely related species showed resemblant protein changing pattern during development, and their developmental changing patterns were different according to the subgroup.
The fauna of spider species inhabited near paddy fields have been investigated in Chinju and Namhae areas. The spiders collected near the paddy fields in Chinju and Namhae areas were 34 species of 31 genera belonging to 10 families: 34 species on paddy levees; 16 species on barley fields; 17 species on fallow fields; and 18 species on paddy fields. The species diversity was the highest on paddy levee. The dominant species collected from each habitat near the paddy fields were Pardosa astrigera on the paddy levees and barley fields, Pirata subpiraticus on the fallow field, and Pachygnatha clercki on the paddy fields. The spiders inhabited near rice fields can be classified into nine groups based on the ecological and taxonomical characteristics: 1. Pirata spp. 2. Pachygnatha clercki 3. Teridiidae, Erigonidae, Linypidae 4. Tetragnatha spp. 5. Dolomedes surfureus 6. Pardosa spp. 7. Salticidae 8. Thomisidae 9. Clubionidae Among the nine spider groups, the spiders belong to the group 1-5 prefered wet ground or paddy to dry ground, in contrast to the group 6-9 which prefered to live on dry land. The difference of the habitat preference indicated that the former five groups do the important roll as pest predators in paddy, while the latter four group mainly suppress the overwintering pest populations on paddy levees.
