An analytical finite element approach to nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete shear walls with opening under monotonic loading was presented in this paper. In order to achieve the objectives of present paper, the orthogonal anisotropic models for cracked reinforced concrete element based on smeared crack concept were used as the nonlinear material models of biaxial state of stress. The stiffness of cracked concrete was evaluated through the combined use of tension and compression stiffness models in and parallel directions of crack, respectively and shear transfer effect due to the aggregate interlocking at crack surface. The stress and strain of reinforcement in concrete was evaluated using the average stress and average strain relation with bond effect. based on smeared crack concept. The diagonal reinforcing bar was modeled using truss element with bond effect. A special significance of diagonal reinforcement near opening was given to the shear wall with opening and an effective distribution of diagonal reinforcement was presented in order to give an ultimate strength increment as well as a crack control.
Dynamic behavior of immiscible gas bubble attached to the wall in channel flow plays very important role in many engineering applications. Special attention has been paid to micro direct methanol fuel cell(${\mu}$DMFC) where surface tension becomes dominant factor with minor gravitational effect due to its reduced size. Therefore, displacement of $CO_2$ bubble generating on a cathode side in ${\mu}$DMFC can be very difficult and efficient removal of $CO_2$ bubbles will affect the overall machine performance considerably. We have focused our efforts on studying the dynamic behavior of immiscible bubble attached to the one side of the wall on 2D rectangular channel subject to external shear flow. We used Level Contour Reconstruction Method(LCRM) which is the simplified version of front tracking method to track the bubble interface motion. Effects of Reynolds number, Weber number, advancing/receding contact angle and property ratio on bubble detachment characteristic has been numerically identified.

The most important thing in the design of the reinforced earth retaining wall is to obtain the good backfill materials. However there was a special case using soils mixed with the crushed stone, because the field ran short of good backfill soils. Accordingly in this study various kind of tests were performed according to the mixing content of a crushed stone, which are the gradation curve, the direct shear test and the pullout test. From the test results at first the gradation of soils mixed with crushed stone has been compared with the selecting standard as backfill of reinforced earth wall. And the gradation standard has been satisfied in case of mixing ratio 20% of a crushed stone under 19mm. Also the direct shear test and the pullout test have been performed and at the test results the shear strength parameter and the pullout strength parameter were increased with the increse of the mixing content of a crushed stone. It has been thought that this study will give important data to a designer in designing the reinforced earth wall with soils mixed with crush stones.
This study focuses on the influence of strong ground motion duration on the response and collapse probability of reinforced concrete walls with a predominant response in flexure. Walls with different height and mass were used to account for a broad spectrum of configurations and fundamental periods. The walls were designed following the specifications of the Chilean design code. Non-linear models of the reinforced concrete walls using a distributed plasticity approach were performed in OpenSees and calibrated with experimental data. Special attention was put on modeling strength and stiffness degradation. The effect of duration was isolated using spectrally equivalent ground motions of long and short duration. In order to assess the behavior of the RC shear walls, incremental dynamic analyses (IDA) were performed, and fragility curves were obtained using cumulative and non-cumulative engineering demand parameters. The spectral acceleration at the fundamental period of the wall was used as the intensity measure (IM) for the IDAs. The results show that the long duration ground motion set decreases the average collapse capacity in walls of medium and long periods compared to the results using the short duration set. Also, it was found that a lower median intensity is required to achieve moderate damage states in the same medium and long period wall models. Finally, strength and stiffness degradation are important modelling parameters and if they are not included, the damage in reinforced concrete walls may be greatly underestimated.

Precast large panel structures behave differently form frame and monolithic wall structures under external loads, because of the distinct planes of weakness in the horizontal and vertical joints between panels. These joints may slide and open during shaking, producing large localized changes in the bending and shear stiffness of individual walls. The structural behavior of large precast panel buildings depends on the relative strength and stiffness of the panels and joints. Special modeling are thus required for the analysis of precast panel connections. This study suggests a new analytical modeling and method to obtain the rational estimation of discontinuity and slip movements form the connections of precast large panel structures .

This study attempts to develop new simplified approximate formulas to predict the fundamental natural periods of vibration (T) for bearing wall systems engaged with special reinforced concrete shear walls (RCSW) under seismic loads. Commonly, seismic codes suggested empirical formulas established by regression analysis of measured T for buildings during earthquake motions. These formulas depend on structure type, building height, number, height and length of SW, and ratio of SW area to base area of structure. In this study, a parametric investigation is performed for T of 110 selected models of bearing RCSW systems with varying structural height, configuration of horizontal plans including building width, number and width of bays, presence of middle corridors and core SWs. For this purpose, a 3D non-linear response time history (TH) analysis is implemented using ETABS v16.2.1. New formulas to estimate T are anticipated and compared with those obtained from formulas of IBC 2012 and ASCE/SEI 7-10. Moreover, the study examines responses of an arbitrarily two selected test model of 60 m and 80 m in height with presence of SWs having middle corridors. It is observed that the performance of the tested buildings is different through arising of considerable errors when using codes' formulas for estimating T. Accordingly, using the present proposed formulas exhibits more reasonable and safer design compared to codes' formulas. The results showed that equitable enhancement is promising to improve T formulas approaching enhanced and accurate estimation of T with reliable analysis, design, and evaluation of bearing RCSW systems.
Pipe jacking is a name for a method to excavate a tunnel by pushing pipe into the ground from an especial pit. Size of tunnels in this method is different from under 900mm (microtunneling) to more than 3,000mm. Method of excavation is also different from hand digging to use of any kind of tunnel boring machines such as slurry and earth pressure balance (EPB) machines. Slurry pipe jacking was firmly established as a special method for the nondisruptive construction of the underground tunnels in urban area. During the pipe jacking and microtunneling process, the jacking load is an important parameter, controlling the pipe wall thickness, need to and location of intermediate jacking station, selection of jacking frame and lubrication requirements. The main component of the jacking load is due to frictional resistance. In this paper the skin friction between pipe surface and surrounding condition also lubricant quality based on a few fundamental tests, were considered. During this study unconfined compressive strength test, dynamic friction measurement test and direct shear box test were raised for one of the largest diameter slurry pipe jacking project in Fujisawa city in Japan. It could be concluded that in slurry pipe jacking, prediction of frictional forces are mainly dependent on successful lubrication, its quality and lubricant strength parameters. Conclusions from this study can be used for the same experiences.
Soil-steel bridges are made of flexible corrugated steel plates buried in the well-compacted granular soil. One kind of possible collapses of these structures could be initiated by shear or tension failure in the soil cover subjected to vehicle loads. Current design codes provide the requirements for the minimum depth of the soil cover to avoid problems associated with soil cover failures. However, these requirements were developed for short span (less than 7.7 m) structures which are made of unstiffened plates of standard corrugation (150$\times$50 m). Numerical analyses were carried out to investigate the behavior of long span soil steel bridges according to thickness of the soil cover. The span of structures were up to 20 m and deep corrugated plates (381$\times$140 m) were used. The analysis showed that the minimum cover depth of 1.5 m could be sufficient to prevent the soil cover failure in the structures with a span exceeding 10 m. Additional analyses were performed to verify the reinforcement effect of the concrete relieving slab which can be a special feature to reduce the live-load effects. Analyses revealed that the bending moment of the conduit wall with a relieving slab was less than 20% of that without a relieving slab in a case of shallow soil cover conditions.

The ground around the portal of a tunnel is the most typical part showing the 3-dimensional mechanical behavior in the tunnel. The portal slope is constructed at the weathered soft rock-mass, and remains as a potential sliding mass. The slope failure around the tunnel portal may happen drastically and induce the great disaster; hence, for the permanent stability several special techniques are required. To solve this problem, the ground around the tunnel portal may be excavated in the arch shape to develop the arching effect in horizontal direction. With the arch-type portal slope, one can reduce considerably the excavation mass and the damage of environments. This approach has not been attempted yet due to the lack of understanding and the well-defined analyzing method, so the retaining wall type portal is more universal. The 3-dimensional finite element analyses were carried out to prove that the arch type is more advantageous in safety and cost than the right angle type. The influence of the tunnel construction sequence and the strength of the rock-mass on the slope stability was investigated by focusing on the maximum shear strain in the slope, and the yield zone at the tunnel face.

Complex-shaped tall building causes many structural challenges due to its structural characteristics regarding inclined members and complexed shape. This paper is aimed at development of design process using computational-platform which is effective design tool for responding frequent design changes, particularly as to overseas projects. StrAuto, a parametric structural modeling and optimizing system, provides the optimized alternatives according to design intent and realize a swift process converting a series of structural information necessary to nonlinear analytical models. The application of the process was to a 45-story hotel building in Ulanbator, Mongolia adopting shear wall and special moment frame with outrigger systems. To investigate the safety of lateral force resisting system against maximum considered earthquake(MCE), nonlinear response history analysis was conducted using StrAuto.
