  • Steward Observatory has a rich and diverse program of investigations, with significant groups working on star and planet formation and astrobiology, galaxy and quasar formation and evolution, technology for adaptive optics and interferometry, computational astrophysics, and effectiveness of educational practice. To support this work, Steward operates and offers a range of observational and other facilities, including the Large Binocular Telescope, the MMT, the Magellan Telescopes, the Arizona Radio Observatory, and a suite of 1- and 2-m class telescopes. A special opportunity for IR astronomy exists with Arizona now running UKIRT. Steward Observatory astronomers would welcome the opportunity to form genuine scientific collaborations that are mutually beneficial for high-impact projects and improving the observing facilities.

  • This paper presents a simple method of rotational and translational motion estimation for digital image stabilization. The scheme first computes the rotation center by taking least squares of selected local velocity vectors, and the rotational angle is found from special subset of motion vectors. And then translational motion can be estimated by the relation among movement of rotation center, rotation angle and translation movement. To show the effectiveness of our approach, the synthetic images are evaluated, resulting in better performance.

  • Prestressing tendons in the wall of circular storage tank were investigated from the viewpoint of equivalent load method. Special attention was paid to the effectiveness of eccentricities of the circumferential and vertical tendons. Some aspects which are frequently overlooked or misinterpreted in the analysis of vertical tendons are discussed. It is expected that the equivalent load method can be effectively used to simplify the analysis of tendons in the circular wall thus to minimize the errors.

  • The problem of the state-minimization for the nonde-terministic finite Rabin-Scott's automata is considered. A new algo-rithm for this problem is obtained. The obtained algorithm has the exponential effectiveness like the earlier-known algorithms for this problem. But each of previous algo-rithms amounts to the search of minimum generative system for local reaction of equal automaton of canonical form and unlike them we use in this paper two special function marking states of the given automaton.

  • Rotational-free-surface (RFS) is a special type of free surface whose two boundaries coincide. For NC machining of PFS, a rotational axis as well as three Cartesian axes are required. In this paper, we develop a four-axis CAM module consisting of: a) Geometric modeling of RFS, b) CL-data generation, and c) Graphic simulation of machining operation. To test the validity and effectiveness of the developed module, several test cuts are made with Bridgeport CNC milling machine and compared with the graphic simulation.

  • H-matrix is a special class of matrices with wide applications in engineering and scientific computation, how to judge if a given matrix is an H-matrix is very important, especially for large scale matrices. In this paper, we obtain several new practical criteria for judging nonsingular H-matrices by using the partitioning technique and Schur complement of matrices. Their effectiveness is illustrated by numerical examples.

  • The objective of this study is to develope an effectiveness measurement technique for U-shaped JIT production line by computer simulation. A small and medium sized automobile brake master cylinder manufacturing plant is studied for productivity improvement The production line is analysed and improved by applying Low Cost Automation, special jigs and fixtures, and facilities layout changes. An experimental simulation model is built using SIMAN(SIMulation ANalysis) simulation software for the production system analysis.

  • In accordance with the stipulations of the STCW Convention, simulation training has been enforced in order to develop practical skills so as to prevent accidents by predetermining the risks in special marine environments. Simulation training is a useful way to acquire navigation abilities, and can continuously measure the ability of a trainee by applying an appropriate evaluation. However, the result of training is evaluated by the instructor's subjective judgment without quantitative criteria. Therefore, this study aims to quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of simulation training. For this purpose, evaluation items were derived by analyzing legal standards, earlier studies, and the current status of MET institutions. The simulations were then performed three times in the same scenarios and analyzed the results. As a result, it has been shown that the objectively analyzed ability to keep the route and to make safe passage with other vessel, as well as subjectively evaluated ability by the apprentice officer has been improved as training progressed. Through the evaluation of simulation training results, it can be derived that simulation education needs supplementation, and can be provided as a basic form of data to quantify the evaluation results of the simulation training in the future.

  • U.S. Air Force Regulation 80-1 defines that a weapon system is composed of equipments, skills, and techniques, the composite of which ferns an instrument of combat. The complete weapon system includes all related facilities, equipments, materials, services, and personnels required for the operation of the system, so that the instrument of combat can be considered as a self-sufficient unit of striking power in its intended operational environment. Effectiveness of a weapon system can be expressed as a function of its liability, reliability and performance capability. Among these attributes which influence the weapon effectiveness, performance capability is considered to be the most critical factor for many weapon systems. In order to illustrate the application of the methodology of performance capability, a specific ease study on the effectiveness of Vulcan anti-air craft gun system is presented with special emphasis on hitting probability on moving targets, effects of artificial rounds dispersion, and several principles related to the deployment of the system. This thesis includes the thorough survey of the possibility of calculating the absolute value of hitting probability on moving targets, indicates that the effects of artificial rounds dispersion increase the value of probability only when the total number of rounds fired within fire range exceeds a certain critical number, and suggests that concentrated guns deployment is better than scattered deployment in order to obtain higher probability and lower average amount of rounds if it is assumed that the effects of counter-attack from enemy threats are not serious.

  • We carried out this study to analyze the effectiveness through health education program in short term which was performed to use the special subject activities. This study was conducted on 63 students who were first grade in S Junior High School from Dec. 1995 to Feb. 1996. To analyze the effectiveness, we performed the Pretest, 1st Posttest, and 2nd Posttest for learned health knowledge. The results were as follows: 1. Most of the students(69.8%) responded that their health were good, and they got the information for health through Mass Com.. The students who had experience of health education were 15.9%, and the 77.8% of the respondents needed the health education. 2. The means of health knowledge on tests were 18.2(Pretest}, 21.5(1st Posttest), and 21.4(2nd Posttest). Increase of health knowledge between Pretest and 1st Posttest was 10.9%. 3. The mean of differences between Pretest and 1st Posttest was 3.26, it was significant(p〈0.01). And the mean of differences between Pretest and 2nd Posttest was 3.19, it was significant(p〈0.01);however, the mean of differences between 1st Posttest and 2nd Posttest was not significant(p=0.2514). 4. The significant main contents were Health Facilities(d=0.42), Pregnancy and Labor(d=0.39), Sex Education(d=0.29), Personal Hygiene(d=0.35), Safety Education (d=0.66), and Drug Abuse(d=0.60)(p〈0.01)
