The Relationships between Educational Investment as a Human Capital Formation and the National Economic Growth: Focusing on non-English-Speaking OECD Countries (인적자본형성으로서의 교육투자와 경제성장과의 관계 : OECD 비영어권 국가들을 중심으로)

  • The issues on education as a human capital formation in recent years have been focused for all of the countries with emerging of the knowledge-based economy. The present study compared and analyzed the relationships between the educational investment and national economic growth of ten non-English-speaking OECD countries during 1970-2008, using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Seemingly Unrelated Regression Estimation (SURE) as the main analytical methods. Findings indicate that educational investment, R&D investment, and fertility rate were statistically significant in the estimation of the variables related to the human capital formation, and these elements had also positive influence on the national economic growth. The most salient factor was the fertility rate, and the R&D investment and educational investment appeared as the next factors in the national economic growth. In particular, the dimensions in the coefficient of the fertility rate showed 1.8 times of the R&D and 3.5 times of the educational investment, respectively. These results imply that educational investment, R&D investment, and the policies which promote fertility rate should be taken into account for the continuous economic growth of each country.

  • The brand consulting for paving the way for overseas-based companies to develop local brands includes many processes such as the analysis of local markets and consumers, the analysis of in-and-out circumstances including the diagnosis of corporate competence and resource, the establishment of brand strategies, the development of brand concepts, and the development of design, which should be performed before the eventual launch of overseas markets. So, the success of overseas-based brand consulting just depends on coworking(i.e., consortium) by brand experts from international marketing, design to local-overseas brand rights which have been barely touched upon by the brand experts. This study aims to present brand consulting framework and to support the development of local-fit brands when the small and medium industries, esteemed relatively less compatible than conglomerates, expand their business in the non-English-speaking countries. This study also includes the results of a demand inquiry on the local fit brand targeted for SMEs. As a brand consulting framework which has been performed at work sites through the accumulated many year's trial and error, it could be a significantly meaningful guidance for the brand experts who perform local-fit brands consulting and the SMEs who look for overseas-based brand consulting.

The Association between Number of Present Teeth and Oral Function in Korean Adults Aged 55~84 Years (55~84세 한국 성인의 현존치아수와 구강기능의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors of oral function associated with number of present teeth (NT) in Korean elderly adults. The research was designed as cross-sectional study using the data of the 4th Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, and the samples were selected by stratified clusters sampling. The subjects aged 55 to 84 years were 4,780 that joined the oral examination survey and questionnaires. The respective variables reflecting socioeconomic status, subjective health status and oral function factor were analyzed and their distributional differences were confirmed by complex sampling logistic regression analysis. Multivariable liner regression models considering covariates were applied to explain the associations between the number of present teeth and other variables. Gender, educated level, illegal dental treatment, self-rated oral health and oral functional factors, including chewing behavior and speaking behavior, were associated with the number of present teeth (p<0.05). Subjects with better self-rated oral health had more NT than those with worse. Subjects with worse speaking behaviors had less NT than those with better. Interventions aiming to enhance oral health in elderly adults should consider socioeconomic, demographic, and oral functional factors.

Speech Rate and Pause Characteristics in Patients with Parkinson's Disease (파킨슨병 환자의 말 속도와 쉼 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the speech rate characteristics (whole speech rate, articulation speech rate, and articulation percentage) and the pause characteristics (pause duration, pause frequency, and pause percentage) of Korean-speaking patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (referred to as IPD hereafter). The study aims first to examine the differences between the patient group with IPD and the other group without IPD concerning those measurements, and secondly to investigate the relevant measurements of the two groups following the sentence length changes. There were two groups of subjects in this study. The first group consisted of 7 subjects between the ages of 50 and 60 who were diagnosed as IPD with mild severity, and the second group consisted of 13 subjects without IPD who matched the age and gender of those in the first group. Those two groups were asked to read 8 different sentences in length at habitual speed. Speech rate and pause characteristics of the two groups were measured and compared each other. The followings results were observed. First, in a study of speech rate characteristics, the whole speech rate and the articulation speech rate of the patient group scored within the normal range, which is same as the group without IPD. On the other hand, with regard to the pause characteristics, differences between two groups were shown; the patient group had shorter pause duration, lower pause frequency, lower pause percentage, and higher articulation percentage. Secondly, in a study of relevant measurements following the sentence length, both groups showed a tendency for whole speech rate and articulation rate to increase as the length of the sentence increased, but the result of pause characteristics showed a difference between two groups. While the group without IPD showed a longer pause duration, higher pause frequency, and higher pause percentage as the length of sentences increases, no differences were shown among the patient group concerning the length of sentences. This study suggests a result that the patients with IPD of mild severity retained a normal speech rate and examined pause characteristics of the patient group which showed a different result from the group without IPD in terms of quality. Future studies on the speech rate and pause characteristics of Korean-speaking patients with IPD in various severities.

Trend of conclusive expressions in Post-Modern Edo-language (근세후기 에도어에 나타나는 단정표현(断定表現)의 양상(樣相))

  • From Post-Modern Edo-language of Japan, it is possible to find expression formats related to current Tokyo language. However, in some cases, Tokyo language and Edo-language has the same format but different usage. One example is the ending portion of a sentence. This research investigates conclusive expressions of Edo-language in literary works excluding the usage of "ダ". Various formats of conclusive expressions appear in a conversation, and the usage is closely related to the speaker's sex, age, and social status. Also from the study, it was possible to see that the social relationship between a speaker and a listener and a conversation circumstance has an effect on the usage of conclusive expressions. In addition, usage does not conform to the current standard Japanese. 1. Currently "である(dearu)" format is seldom used in speaking, it is used with "だ" only in writing. The study found no case of "である(dearu)" in conclusive expressions but some use of "であろうて(dearoute) であらうな(dearouna)" "であったのう(deattanou) であったよ(deattayo)" only in old aged male. 2. "であります(dearimasu)" format is a typical Edo-language used by society-women (Japanese hostess who has a good education and an elegant speaking skills). This format was used once in "浮世風呂"(ukiyoburo) and 14 times in "梅?"(umegoyomi), but speakers were always a female. The reason for 14 occurrences in "梅?" is closely related to the fact that the main characters are society-women and genre is "人情本(ninjoubourn)" which is popular type of cultural literature (based on humanity and romance) in late Edo period. 3. "でござる" format is originally used as a respect-language but later changed to a polite language. The format is always used by male. It is a male language used by old aged people with a genteel manner such as a medical doctor, a retired man, or a funny-song writer. 4. "ございます(gozaimasu) ごぜへます(gozeemasu)" The study found the speaker's social status has a connection with the use of "ごぜへます(gozeemasu)" format. Which is "ございます(gozaimasu)" format but instead of [ai], long vowel [eː] is used. "ごぜへます(gozeemasu)" is more used by a female than a male and only used by young and mid-to-low class people. The format has a tough nuance and less elegant feel, therefore high class and/or educated ladies have a clear tendency to avoiding it

A Comparative Study on Responses to the Sasang Constitution Questionnaire for Patients between Korean and Japanese (한국인과 일본인의 환자용 사상체질 설문지 문항 응답 비교 연구)

  • Objectives This study was performed to compare responses of Korean to the Sasang Constitution questionnaire with those of Japanese and to learn difference in characteristic according to the Sasang Constitution between two countries. Methods 301 Korean visiting the department of the Sasang Constitution, Dong-Eui Medical Center in Busan, Korea from November 2006 to September 2010 responded to the SSCQ-P(Sasang Constitution Questionnaire for Patients). Sasang Constitution specialist interviewed subjects and diagnosed their Sasang Constitution. 361 Japanese visiting the center for Kampo Medicine, Keio University in Tokyo, Japan from January 2010 to February 2011 responded the SSCQ-J(Sasang Constitution Questionnaire for Japanese). The Sasang Constitution was diagnosed in the same way as Korean. We compare responses to the SSCQ-P in Korean with those to the SSCQ-J in Japanese. Results 1. Among Soyangin related 58 items of Sasang Constitution questionnaire, 26, 46.36% items had statistically significant response results in both Korean and Japanese and response disposition of all these items was same. Among Taeeumin related 68items, 36, 52.94% items had statistically significant response results in both Korean and Japanese. Of these, response disposition of 35 items was same and that of 1 item was different. Among Soeumin related 71 items, 31, 43.66% items had statistically significant response results in both Korean and Japanese. Of these, response disposition of 28 items was same and that of 3 items was different. 2. The proportion of items having statistical significance and same disposition in both Korean and Japanese by Sasang Constitutional characteristic category[Features and Way of Speaking, Physical Appearance, Temperament and Talent, Pathological Syndromes] was as follows; In Soyangin, the proportion in Pathological Syndromes was 27.8% and that in the others was more than 41.7%. In Taeeumin, the proportion in Pathological Syndromes was 33.3% and that in the others was more than 57.9%. In Soeumin, the proportion in Features and Way of Speaking was 70.6%, that in Physical Appearance was 8.3% and that in the others was 30~40%. Conclusions The response disposition of many of items having statistical significance between Korean and Japanese was same and that of a few was different. From this, there are many common Sasang Constitutional characteristics between two countries, and possibility of applying the Sasang Constitutional Medicine of Korea to Japan.

The Effect of Inter-word Space on Chinese reading: An Eye Movement Study (단어 간 공백이 중국어 글 읽기에 미치는 영향: 안구운동 추적 연구)

  • This research investigated whether inter-word spaces, the spaces between words, can affect the efficiency of Korean-speaking CSL(Chinese as a second language) learners in Chinese reading of Korean-speaking's ability to read Chinese. Through eye movement tracking experiments, CSL learners of different proficiency levels(beginning, intermediate, and advanced) and native Chinese readers were asked to read Chinese sentences with and without inter-word spaces. The tests analysed the participants' fixation counts and the time spent in reading each sentences and also between each words. In terms of the fixation counts and time spent between sentences, the results show that there were no significant difference in participants' fixation counts from reading sentences with and without inter-word spaces. The results also prove that reading sentences with inter-word spaces significantly shortened the reading time for both CSL learners and native Chinese readers. Even for the participants' fixation counts and time duration between each words, participants spent significantly less fixation counts and reading time while reading words with inter-word spaces. The results were more prominent and positive in tests conducted with CSL learners of lower proficiency. This research shows that inter-word spaces in Chinese texts can enhance the efficiency of chinese learners' reading ability.

Changes in mathematics pedagogical lexicons: Extension research of the International Classroom Lexicon using a text mining approach (수학 교수학적 어휘의 변화: 텍스트 마이닝 기법을 이용한 교실수업 어휘 연구의 확장)

  • Research on lexicon and language provides insights into the interests, values and practices of a community where individuals use the language. The International Classroom Lexicon Project, in which ten countries participated, identified own country's mathematics teaching and learning lexicons by investigating mathematics classroom instruction from teachers' perspectives in a speaking-oriented community. This study, as an extension of the International Classroom Lexicon Project research, investigated pedagogical lexicons used in 「Mathematics and Education」 journals specialized for Korean professional mathematics teachers published by the Korean Society of Teachers of Mathematics. Using the text mining approach, we also traced how these pedegogical lexicons have changed quantitatively over the past 10 years with a diachronic perspective. As a results, several novel terms were found in the writing-oriented community, which were not identified in the speaking-oriented community. In addition, we could discover some pedagogical lexicons have increased statistically significantly and some lexicons appeared(increased) rapidly across years. This implies the teacher community's values and zeitgeist by reflecting these changes in the sociocultural, incidental and social changing (i.e., periodical change) contexts. This study has value as a first step in understanding zeitgeist for mathematics education in Korean mathematics teacher community according to changes of times over the past 10 years. Also, this study contributes to the methodological insights: the text mining technique provides a methodological contribution to researching changes in interests, values and zeitgeist according to these changes in the times.

Comparison of KSL Curriculum and ESL Curriculum for Adaptation of International Students in the Internet of Things era to Domestic Universities (사물인터넷시대의 유학생의 국내대학 적응을 위한 KSL 교과과정과 ESL 교과과정 비교)

  • In this study, it is necessary to supplement the Korean language curriculum in order for international students to adapt and settle in Korea in an era where education is being transformed into future education due to the 4th industry. In the KFL (Korean as a Foreign Language) situation encountered by international students, they suffer from difficulties in university mathematics due to communication problems due to lack of language ability, which is one of the stress factors for cultural adaptation in the Korean language education program. To solve this problem, we analyzed ESL programs in English-speaking countries and KSL programs in Korea to set educational goals, curriculum, and educational methods to achieve goals for international students, and to establish curriculum and learning processes. Therefore, the Korean language education program (KSL program) for foreign students in the Korean language curriculum should also be supplemented by accepting the advantages of setting accurate goals for the ESL program and linking it with university graduation in the curriculum of English-speaking countries. In addition, for international students to learn Korean, an integrated Korean language education course and management system using IT suitable for the 4th industrial age is needed.

Identifying Characteristics of Korean Language Learners Enrolled in University-attached Lifelong Learning Institutions in Hong Kong (홍콩의 한국어 학습자 특성 연구 - 홍콩의 대학 부설 평생교육기관 학습자를 대상으로)

  • This study aims to understand the characteristics of Korean language learners and propose appropriate teaching plans for them through a focus group interview with Korean language instructors who had experience in teaching Korean at university-attached institutions in Hong Kong. For this purpose, the investigator interviewed ten instructors who taught Korean for at least five years. Korean language learners in Hong Kong who were in their twenties, but there were diverse age groups, including those in their fifties or older. Their motivations for learning Korean included the Korean Wave and the influence of support from the Continuing Education Fund by the Hong Kong government. Korean language learners in Hong Kong were characterized by active learning desire and effort, continuous learning intention, passive performance in speaking, and sensitivity to the disclosure of private information. Based on these findings, the study proposes to devise teaching and learning methods based on various age groups in a class and teaching methods for speaking that reflect the characteristics of Korean language learners in Hong Kong to teach Korean more effectively. The study is significant as a field study that examines the learning motivations, learning attitudes, and difficulties with Korean study of Korean language learners based on an unprecedented survey of the characteristics of common local Korean learners in Hong Kong.
