  • In this paper, a hybrid deep learning model, called 2D convolution with bidirectional long short-term memory (2DCBLSTM), is presented that can effectively combine both spatial and temporal features for crop classification. In the proposed model, 2D convolution operators are first applied to extract spatial features of crops and the extracted spatial features are then used as inputs for a bidirectional LSTM model that can effectively process temporal features. To evaluate the classification performance of the proposed model, a case study of crop classification was carried out using multi-temporal unmanned aerial vehicle images acquired in Anbandegi, Korea. For comparison purposes, we applied conventional deep learning models including two-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) using spatial features, LSTM using temporal features, and three-dimensional CNN using spatio-temporal features. Through the impact analysis of hyper-parameters on the classification performance, the use of both spatial and temporal features greatly reduced misclassification patterns of crops and the proposed hybrid model showed the best classification accuracy, compared to the conventional deep learning models that considered either spatial features or temporal features. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed model can be effectively applied to crop classification owing to its ability to consider spatio-temporal features of crops.

  • As the utility of an optical satellite image with a high spatial resolution (i.e., fine-scale) has been emphasized, recently, various studies of the land surface monitoring using those have been widely carried out. However, the usefulness of fine-scale satellite images is limited because those are acquired at a low temporal resolution. To compensate for this limitation, the spatiotemporal data fusion can be applied to generate a synthetic image with a high spatio-temporal resolution by fusing multiple satellite images with different spatial and temporal resolutions. Since the spatio-temporal data fusion models have been developed for mid or low spatial resolution satellite images in the previous studies, it is necessary to evaluate the applicability of the developed models to the satellite images with a high spatial resolution. For this, this study evaluated the applicability of the developed spatio-temporal fusion models for KOMPSAT-3A and Sentinel-2 images. Here, an Enhanced Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Fusion Model (ESTARFM) and Spatial Time-series Geostatistical Deconvolution/Fusion Model (STGDFM), which use the different information for prediction, were applied. As a result of this study, it was found that the prediction performance of STGDFM, which combines temporally continuous reflectance values, was better than that of ESTARFM. Particularly, the prediction performance of STGDFM was significantly improved when it is difficult to simultaneously acquire KOMPSAT and Sentinel-2 images at a same date due to the low temporal resolution of KOMPSAT images. From the results of this study, it was confirmed that STGDFM, which has relatively better prediction performance by combining continuous temporal information, can compensate for the limitation to the low revisit time of fine-scale satellite images.

  • A simulated realistic virtual environment is inhabited by autonomous cyber-humans who play the roles of agents in events. A key element, which enables this realism, is the historical context formed by time and space. A knowledge-representation scheme, composed of both spatial and temporal aspects needed by the agent to respond to dynamically changing situations, is essential for the design of a realistic virtual agent. In this work, spatial and temporal aspects of dynamic situations in the virtual environment have been formalized as a key component of our knowledge-representation scheme. This scheme provides a mathematical framework to construct realistic virtual situations that change with time, and background knowledge for agents in the simulated environment to deduce new pieces of information and plan against changing situations.

  • In this paper, we propose a new 3D coding method for heterogeneous systems over enhanced Access Grid (e-AG) with 3D display using spatio-temporal scalability. The proposed encoder produces four bit-streams: one base layer and enhancement layer l, 2 and 3. The base layer represents a video sequence for left eye with lower spatial resolution. An enhancement layer l provides additional bit-stream needed for reproduction of frames produced in base layer with full resolution. Similarly, the enhancement layer 2 represents a video sequence for right eye with lower spatial resolution and an enhancement layer 3 provides additional bit-stream needed for reproduction of its reference pictures with full resolution. In this system, temporal resolution reduction is obtained by dropping B-frames in the receiver according to network condition. The receiver system can select the spatial and temporal resolution of video sequence with its display condition by properly combining bit-streams.

  • An authentic simulation platform for events situated in spatio-temporal space is presented. The authenticity, i.e., logical fidelity to the reality, of this cyberspace is realized by maximizing the diversity and unpredictability of events occurring therein. The knowledge components and associated schemes required for the simulation of events situated in spatio-temporal space encompass the environmental factors, the objects, the events, and their interrelations. We deviled event activation, triggering mechanism, and cognitive function related to event to realize an authentic simulation of discretionary events. The agents in this simulation environments are autonomous in that they have their own existence and capability of event planning. We focused on identifying basic constructs relevant to authentic simulation of discretionary events whose initiation depends on human intention. Several key ideas are implemented in a typical spatio-temporal situation to demonstrate the viability of our simulation mechanism.

  • We will catch the spatio-temporal changes that analyse the unknown topography of Go-Gunsan Islands using Landsat TM satellite images into an unsupervised ISODATA classification and a supervised nearest likelihood classification. Each sedimental topography has the different characteristics according to building the Saemangeum embarkment. We will deal with the distribution of sedimental shapes using ERDAS Imagine 8. 6. The result that classifies specifically topographic properties of our research area be considered to get use of establishing the reclaiming program and predicating the reclaimed sedimental topography. The research area can be classified into tidal flats and sea level using band 4 among 7 bands of Landsat TM. Also band 5 can be used to classify the special unknown shapes of tidal flats. We will clarify the efficiency that spatio-temporal sedimental changes can be extracted through processing satellite images. Therefore, the spatio-temporal unknown topography change monitoring using satellite images is expected to be very useful to clarify whether the tidal flat is generated or not in the Go-Gunsan Islands at the outer side of the embarkment after constructing completely the Saemangeum tidal embarkment.

  • The spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton community was investigated in Kyeonggi Bay with monthly samples from February 2001 to December 2001 at 5 stations along a transect between Incheon coastal waters and Seongap-Do. Monthly mean abundance of total zooplankton ranged from 1,100(Feb.)∼404,200 indiv./㎥ (Aug.) and annual mean abundance of total zooplankton was 55,000 indiv./㎥. The spatial mean abundance of total zooplankton varied from 114,600 indiv./㎥ (Incheon coastal waters) to 16,500 indiv./㎥ (Seongab-Do). Zooplankton abundance was higher in the inner bay than in the outer bay. Noctiluca scintillans, Acartia hongi, Oithona davisae, Paracalanus crassirostris, Paracalanus indicus and Oikopluera spp. were dominant species in Kyeonggi Bay and they contributed 95% of annual mean abundance of total zooplankton. Most of dominant species distributed widely in study area throughout the year, however seasonal abundance peak only happened in inner part of the Bay. This pattern suggests that the spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton is affected by the variations of water temperature and phytoplankton standing stock.

  • There are various research works on the spatio-temporal drought analysis because spatio-temporal behaviors of drought are essential for understanding the development and migration patterns of drought events. This study quantified three-dimensional drought events using the 6-month Standard Precipitation Index (SPI6). A total of 45 drought events were found during the analysis period, and the migration patterns of drought event in South Korea were analyzed using the centers of drought events. In South Korea, more droughts were migrated frequently in the north/south direction than in the east/west direction. In addition, droughts moving eastward have decreased since 2000, while droughts moving northward have been found to be longer. The results of spatio-temporal drought analysis may be highly utilized for understanding drought development and migration patterns.

  • PURPOSE: Most gait assessment tools are expensive and require controlled laboratory environments. Tri-axial accelerometers have been used in gait analysis as an alternative to laboratory assessments. Many smartphones have added an accelerometer, making it possible to assess spatio-temporal gait parameters. This study was conducted to confirm the reliability and validity of a smartphone-based accelerometer at quantifying spatio-temporal gait parameters of stroke patients when attached to the body. METHODS: We measured gait parameters using a smartphone accelerometer and gait parameters through the GAITRite analysis system and the reliability and validity of the smartphone-based accelerometer for quantifying spatio-temporal gait parameters for stroke patients were then evaluated. Thirty stroke patients were asked to walk at self-selected comfortable speeds over a 10 m walkway, during which time gait velocity, cadence and step length were computed from smartphone-based accelerometers and validated with a GAITRite analysis system. RESULTS: Smartphone data was found to have excellent reliability ($ICC2,1{\geq}.98$) for measuring the tested parameters, with a high correlation being observed between smartphone-based gait parameters and GAITRite analysis system-based gait parameters (r = .99, .97, .41 for gait velocity, cadence, step length, respectively). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that specific opportunities exist for smartphone-based gait assessment as an alternative to conventional gait assessment. Moreover, smartphone-based gait assessment can provide objective information about changes in the spatio-temporal gait parameters of stroke subjects.

  • As the spread of mobile devices equipped with various sensors and high-quality wireless network communications functionsexpands, the amount of spatio-temporal data generated from mobile devices in various service fields is rapidly increasing. In conventional research into processing a large amount of real-time spatio-temporal streams, it is very difficult to apply a Hadoop-based spatial big data system, designed to be a batch processing platform, to a real-time service for spatio-temporal data streams. This paper extends the MapReduce online framework to support real-time query processing for continuous-input, spatio-temporal data streams, and proposes a load management method to distribute overloads for efficient query processing. The proposed scheme shows a dynamic load balancing method for the nodes based on the inflow rate and the load factor of the input data based on the space partition. Experiments show that it is possible to support efficient query processing by distributing the spatial data stream in the corresponding area to the shared resources when load management in a specific area is required.
