  • This study aimed to assess the spatial cognition strategies and roles taken by students in the process of solving spatial tasks. For the analysis, this study developed two spatial tests based on the mental rotation test, which were taken by 63 students in their final year in elementary schools. The results of this study showed that in terms of the method of approaching the tasks, students took the comprehensive approach and the partial approach. When solving the tasks, the students were shown to use the imagery thinking or analytic thinking method. In terms of perspective, the students rotated the object or change their perspectives. A comparison of the methods used by the students revealed that when approaching the tasks, the group of students who chose the partial approach had higher scores. In terms of solving the tasks the analytic thinking method, and in terms of perspective, changing perspectives were shown to be more effective. Such effective methods were used more frequently in discrimination tasks than in recognition tasks, and in more complicated items, than in less complicated items. In conclusion, the results of this study suggested that the partial, analytic approach and the change of perspectives are useful strategies in solving tasks which require high cognitive effort.

  • The combination of spatial latticed structures (hereafter SLS) and flexible cables, the cable-stayed spatial latticed structures (hereafter CSLS) can cross longer span. According to variation principle, a novel geometric nonlinear formulation for 3-D bar elements considering large displacement and infinitesimal rotation increments with second-order precision is developed. The cable nonlinearity is investigated and it is taken that the secant modulus method can be considered as an exact method for a cable member. The tower column with which the cables link is regarded as a special kind of beam element, and, a new simplified stiffness formulation is presented. The computational strategies for the nonlinear dynamic response of structures are given, and the ultimate load carrying capacities and seismic responses are analyzed numerically. It is noted that, compared with corresponding spatial latticed shells, the cable-stayed spatial latticed shells have more strength and more stiffness, and that the verical seismic responses of both CSLS and CLS are remarkably greater than the horizontal ones. In addition, the computation shows that the stiffness of tower column influences the performance of CSLS to a certain extent and the improvement of structural strength and stiffness of CSLS is relevant not only to cables but also to tower columns.

  • Delta-form-based methods for solving high order spatial discretization schemes are introduced into the reactor SN transport equation. Due to the nature of the delta-form, the final numerical accuracy only depends on the residuals on the right side of the discrete equations and have nothing to do with the parts on the left side. Therefore, various high order spatial discretization methods can be easily adopted for only the transport term on the right side of the discrete equations. Then the simplest step or other robust schemes can be adopted to discretize the increment on the left hand side to ensure the good iterative convergence. The delta-form framework makes the sweeping and iterative strategies of various high order spatial discretization methods be completely the same with those of the traditional SN codes, only by adding the residuals into the source terms. In this paper, the flux limiter method and weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme are used for the verification purpose to only show the advantages of the introduction of delta-form-based solving methods and other high order spatial discretization methods can be also easily extended to solve the SN transport equations. Numerical solutions indicate the correctness and effectiveness of delta-form-based solving method.

  • The purpose of this study is to look for an environmental design method based on open narrative structure, and to promote various experiences and interpretations of space through user's engagements. That is to say, the designer does not lead specific events through separate Boning but using the continuous open composition users are provided with margins for their imaginations. Spatial formulation through open narrative structure gives us various thoughts and it plays an important role in making a sequential space. Like an abstract painting, it is a complex story making or arranging a montage of images containing stories that elicit the reader's engagement through diverse interpretations. Like this, open composition exists in an ambiguous state and it is possible to interpret unfinished‘evolving work’within it. Utilizing open narrative structure, this study attempts to apply the idea of sequencing and open composition in the case of designing Arirang Culture Park. Open composition should induce various engagements by users and could be a medium which organically connects nature, culture and people. The spatial strategies of‘ambiguity’ and‘transparency’are like a bundle of complex and heterogeneous factors. Finally, the study focuses on the ‘integration’of the main ideas that compose multilayered space. ‘Voidness’and‘thickening’are also used for spatial strategies in open narrative structure. As alternative plans for undecided programs of the space, the voidness can be a strategic design program with flexibility about changes of futures. Also, thickening can be a strategic design program for functional reinforcement of the space, for the dramatic effects and for the generation of incidental events. Although both voidness and thickening seem paradoxical, we can see they are similar in the way that both focus on various spatial uses and by how they do not function as one-to-one correspondence, but as multiple correspondences. Therefore, open narrative structure is possible to apply in designing space and it can be an alternative design strategy for inducing multiple interpretations of space.

  • The goal of this research is to explore quantitative and residential features and spatial patterns of two-person households to suggest policy implications for housing supply and development in Seoul. Major findings of this study are as follows. First, the number of two-person households has increased rapidly mainly due to the growth of the elderly and single-parent households. They are mainly composed of the elderly over 60s and the youth of 30s of householder age. They are less likely to have well-paying jobs, and thus more likely to suffer from poverty. They are also inclined to live in rental and small-sized residential units and spatial segregation between the youth and the elderly became serious. In addition, their residential area can be classified into four types: area adjacent to employment centers, hinterland of urban centers, affordable multi-family housing area and redeveloped apartment area. It is necessary to change the current housing policy directions to take changing population and household structure into consideration. Also, diversified housing strategies and programs should be prepared to consider various household types and their needs and demands. Place-based strategies for housing supply and development are needed in consideration of spatial patterns and locational attributes of two-person households. Attention needs to be paid to resolving the social issue of residential segregation between different generations.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the spatial distribution of highly educated human capital and to identify key factors affecting their spatial distribution. We analyzed the spatial concentration and inequality using Gini's coefficient and exploratory spatial data analysis and identified the economic and amenity factors to affect the spatial concentration of highly educated human capital using spatial regression model. The findings show that the spatial pattern of highly educated human capital is concentrated, imbalanced, and clustered in Capital region and part of Chungcheong and Gangwon region. The spatial concentration were more affected by economic factor than by amenity factors. This study provides some implication on the regional economic strategies to attract the human capital.

  • In this research, based on the fact that spatial ability is important for the achievement in the STEM fields, and technological innovation, Purdue Spatial Visualization Test-Rotation has been used to investigate engineering freshmen's spatial ability and gender differences. Students who have taken advanced mathematics courses in high school(those who have taken type B math test in Korean SAT test) and students with general math courses(those who have taken type A in Korean SAT-Math test) are included in this study to find out the relationship between mathematics achievement and spatial ability. Finding out the strategies taken by students was another aim of this study. This strategic differences between high achievers and lower achievers, male and female students were analyzed from students' self report. Spatial ability test score was highest in the SAT-Math type B male students, decreased in the order of type A male students, type B female students, and lastly type A female students. There was no substantial difference between second and third groups. In each group, male students' average score was 8~10% higher than female students, which affirms 2015's results. The correlation between spatial ability and mathematics achievement was negligible in each group, but male students' math score and spatial ability score were higher than that of female students. This can be interpreted that there is some correlation between these two. Strategic choices can vary in the continuous spectrum with analytic method and holistic method at both ends. From students' self report, using Mann-Witney test, it turned out that there exists strategic differences between male and female students. Male students have a tendency to use holistic strategy more often than female students. I also found that the strategy choice did not vary greatly among all score groups. For the perfect score groups, both female and male students used holistic strategy most frequently. For low achieving groups, there is an evidence that these students overuse one method compared to average or high achieving groups, which turned out to be less effective. Based on these, I suggest that low achieving students need to have more chances to adopt efficient strategies and to practice challenging problems to improve their spatial abilities.

  • This paper deals with the global dynamic behavior of multiple autonomous mobile robots with suggested navigation strategies within unbounded and bounded spatial domain. We derive some navigation strategies of robots wirh complete detectability with finite range to reach their goal states without collision which is motivated by Coulomb's law regarding repulsive and attractive forces between electrical charges. An analysis of the dynamic behavior of the interacting robots with the suggested navigation strategies under the assumption that communication is not permissible between robots is made and some examples are illustrated by computer simulation. The convergence of robot motions to their goal states under certain conditions is established by considering their global dynamic behavior even when some objects are close to their goal points.
