  • A simplified view of array design and application process was introduced. Array design is critical to achieve a successful phased array measurements. A planar microphone array is designed to produce optimum performance and also to fit economic requirement in integrating data acquisition system. Certain performance characteristics are of primary concern when designing arrays. These characteristics include array resolution, spatial aliasing and array sidelobe suppression. Every array has its directional pattern that shows such characteristics. Assuming that a monopole source is located in center, beam-patterns have been simulated varying measurement conditions such as number of sensors. array aperture size, distance between array and source, frequency of interest and so on. Sensor correction was conducted on very channel using magnitudes and phased of FRF with respect to a reference microphone channel. Then with a spiral type array, measurements have been made with two point sources of same frequency in order to investigate array resolving abilities. It is observed that higher frequency source achieves better resolution than lower one does.

  • In this paper, we employ the modulation technique for improving the characteristics of beamformer in the low frequencies and thus improving the overall noise reduction performance. In the 1-dimensional uniform linear microphone arrays, we can suppress the narrowband noise component using the delay-and-sum beamforming. But, for the wideband noise signal, the delay-and-sum beamformer does not work well for the reduction of low frequency component because the inter-element spacing is usually set to avoid spatial aliasing at high frequencies. Hence, the beamwidth is not uniform with respect to each frequency and it is usually wider at the low frequencies. In order to obtain the beamwidth independent of frequencies, subarray systems[1][2][3][4] and multi-beamforming[5] have been proposed. However these algorithms need large space and more microphones since they are based on the theory that the size of the array is proportional to the wavelength of the input signal. In the proposed beamformer, we reduce the low frequency noise by using modulation technique that does not need additional sensors or non-uniform spacing. More Precisely, the array signals are split into subbands, and the low frequency components are shifted to high frequencies by modulation and reduced by the delay-and-sum beamforming techniques with small size microphone array. Experimental results show that the proposed technique Provides better performance than the conventional ones, especially in the low frequency band.

  • Digital still camera generally uses optical low-pass filter(OLPF) to enhance its image quality because it removes high spatial frequencies causing aliasing. However, the use of OLPF causes some loss of detail. On the other hand, when image are captured by using no OLPF, the moir$\acute{e}$ is generally existed in high spatial frequency region of an image. Therefore, in this paper, moir$\acute{e}$ reduction method in case of using no OLPF is suggested. To detect the moir$\acute{e}$, spatial frequency response(SFR) of camera was firstly analyzed by using ISO 12233 resolution chart. Then, moir$\acute{e}$ region is detected by using the patterns that are related to the SFR of camera. next, this region is analysed in the frequency domain. Then, the moir$\acute{e}$ is reduced by removing its frequency component, which represents inflection point between high frequency and DC components. Through the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method can achieve moir$\acute{e}$ reduction with preserving the detail.

  • The pressure fluctuation on the surface of a submerged body has been recognized as a dominant noise source. There have been many studies concerning the flow induced noise on a flat plate. However, the noise over an axisymmetric body has not been well reported. This paper addresses the way in which we have investigated the mechanism of noise generation due to an axisymmetric body. The associated experiments and signal processing methods are introduced. A 3-dimensional axisymmetric body whose length and diameter were 2 m and 10.4 cm, was prepared as a test specimen. The wall pressure on the surface of the body was measured in a large scale low noise wind tunnel at KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery and Metals). To measure the wall pressure, we used two microphone arrays which were tangential and normal to the flow. Based on the measured signal, frequency-wavenumber spectrum which explains the structure of turbulence noise, was estimated. Tangential to the flow, there exists convective ridge at a relatively higher wavenumber region; this can cause spatial aliasing. To circumvent this problem, the cross spectrum was interpolated. The interpolation has been performed by unwrapping the phase and smoothing the cross spectrum. The phase unwrapping was done based on the Corcos model; the phase of cross spectrum decreases linearly with the distance between microphones. Aforementioned signal processings are possible by employing the experimental results that the estimated wavenumber spectrum quite resembles the Corcos model. We try to modify the Corcos model which is applicable to the flat plate, by altering the magnitude of cross spectrum to fit the experimental data more accurately. We proposed that this wavenumber spectrum model is suitable for the 3-dimensional axisymmetric body. Normal to the flow, there exists a little correlation between signals of different microphones. The circumferential wavenumber spectrum contains uniform power along the wavenumbers.

  • Recently, noise has been regarded as one of the most notorious and frequent environmental pollutions which can be often encountered not only in the living space but also in the industrial site. Studies on physiological and psychological effects of long-term noise exposure to human being have commanded the public interest on noise issues. Since environmental noises such as traffic noise and construction noise is mainly flowed through the open window, it is necessary to develop the active noise control system to reduce it inside the building. Although control speakers and microphones for the noise signal measurement in the control region are essential for the conventional active noise control methods, it is impossible to implement them in the control region in the building environment because the control region is the living quarter and they may hinder activities of the residents. Therefore, we proposed the active window system to reduce the exterior noise flowed through the open window with microphones installed outside the window and control speakers installed at the frame of the window. To confirm the performance of the proposed active window, we carried out the simulation and experiment using active window system with 8 control speakers. Simulation results showed the noticeable noise reduction effect inside the control region within the frequency range without the spatial aliasing. Experimental result showed that the total acoustic potential energy inside the room of the scale model is reduced to about 10dB within the interest of frequency range.

  • Purpose: To report the use of multiband accelerated echo-planar imaging (EPI) for resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) to achieve rapid high temporal resolution at 3T compared to conventional EPI. Materials and Methods: rs-fMRI data were acquired from 20 healthy right-handed volunteers by using three methods: conventional single-band gradient-echo EPI acquisition (Data 1), multiband gradient-echo EPI acquisition with 240 volumes (Data 2) and 480 volumes (Data 3). Temporal signal-to-noise ratio (tSNR) maps were obtained by dividing the mean of the time course of each voxel by its temporal standard deviation. The resting-state sensorimotor network (SMN) and default mode network (DMN) were estimated using independent component analysis (ICA) and a seed-based method. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed between the tSNR map, SMN, and DMN from the three data sets for between-group analysis. P < 0.05 with a family-wise error (FWE) correction for multiple comparisons was considered statistically significant. Results: One-way ANOVA and post-hoc two-sample t-tests showed that the tSNR was higher in Data 1 than Data 2 and 3 in white matter structures such as the striatum and medial and superior longitudinal fasciculus. One-way ANOVA revealed no differences in SMN or DMN across the three data sets. Conclusion: Within the adapted metrics estimated under specific imaging conditions employed in this study, multiband accelerated EPI, which substantially reduced scan times, provides the same quality image of functional connectivity as rs-fMRI by using conventional EPI at 3T. Under employed imaging conditions, this technique shows strong potential for clinical acceptance and translation of rs-fMRI protocols with potential advantages in spatial and/or temporal resolution. However, further study is warranted to evaluate whether the current findings can be generalized in diverse settings.

  • While high resolution images are required for various applications, aliased low-resolution images are only available due to the physical limitations of sensors. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to reconstruct a high resolution image from multiple aliased low-resolution images, which is based on the generalized multichannel deconvolution technique. The conventional approaches are based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) since the aliasing effect is easily analyzed in the frequency domain. However, the useful solution may not be available in many cases, i.e., the underdetermined cases or the insufficient subpixel information cases. In order to compensate for such ill-posedness, the generalized multichannel regularization was adopted in the spatial domain. Furthermore, the usage of the discrete cosine transform instead of the DFT leads to the computationally efficient reconstruction algorithm. The validity of the proposed algorithm is both theoretically and experimentally demonstrated in this paper. It is also shown that the effect of inaccurate motion information is reduced by regularization.

  • Many image fusion quality assessment techniques, which include Wald's, QNR and Khan's protocols, have been proposed. A total procedure for the quality assessment has been defined as the quality assessment protocol. In this paper, we compared the performance of the three protocols using KOMPSAT-2/3/3A satellite images, and tested the applicability to the fusion quality assessment of the KOMPSAT satellite images. In addition, we compared and analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of the three protocols. We carried out the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the protocols by applying five fusion methods to the KOMPSAT test images. Then we compared the quantitative and qualitative results of the protocols from the aspects of the spectral and spatial preservations. In the Wald's protocol, the results from the qualitative and quantitative analysis were almost matched. However, the Wald's protocol had the limitations 1) that it is timeconsuming due to downsampling process and 2) that the fusion quality assessment are performed by using downsampled fusion image. The QNR protocol had an advantage that it utilizes an original image without downsampling. However, it could not find the aliasing effect of the wavelet-fused images in the spectral preservation. It means that the spectral preservation assessment of the QNR protocol might not be perfect. In the Khan's protocol, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the spectral preservation was not matched in the wavelet fusion. This is because the fusion results were changed in the downsampling process of the fused images. Nevertheless, the Khan's protocol were superior to Wald's and QNR protocols in the spatial preservation.

  • This paper examines the sampling and jitter specifications and considerations for Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) software receivers. Software radio (SWR) technologies are being used in the implementation of communication receivers in general and GNSS receivers in particular. With the advent of new GPS signals, and a range of new Galileo and GLONASS signals soon becoming available, GNSS is an application where SWR and software-defined radio (SDR) are likely to have an impact. The sampling process is critical for SWR receivers, where it occurs as close to the antenna as possible. One way to achieve this is by BandPass Sampling (BPS), which is an undersampling technique that exploits aliasing to perform downconversion. BPS enables removal of the IF stage in the radio receiver. The sampling frequency is a very important factor since it influences both receiver performance and implementation efficiency. However, the design of BPS can result in degradation of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) due to the out-of-band noise being aliased. Important to the specification of both the ADC and its clocking Phase- Locked Loop (PLL) is jitter. Contributing to the system jitter are the aperture jitter of the sample-and-hold switch at the input of ADC and the sampling-clock jitter. Aperture jitter effects have usually been modeled as additive noise, based on a sinusoidal input signal, and limits the achievable Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). Jitter in the sampled signal has several sources: phase noise in the Voltage-Controlled Oscillator (VCO) within the sampling PLL, jitter introduced by variations in the period of the frequency divider used in the sampling PLL and cross-talk from the lock line running parallel to signal lines. Jitter in the sampling process directly acts to degrade the noise floor and selectivity of receiver. Choosing an appropriate VCO for a SWR system is not as simple as finding one with right oscillator frequency. Similarly, it is important to specify the right jitter performance for the ADC. In this paper, the allowable sampling frequencies are calculated and analyzed for the multiple frequency BPS software radio GNSS receivers. The SNR degradation due to jitter in a BPSK system is calculated and required jitter standard deviation allowable for each GNSS band of interest is evaluated. Furthermore, in this paper we have investigated the sources of jitter and a basic jitter budget is calculated that could assist in the design of multiple frequency SWR GNSS receivers. We examine different ADCs and PLLs available in the market and compare known performance with the calculated budget. The results obtained are therefore directly applicable to SWR GNSS receiver design.
