This paper presents a super-resolution reconstruction method based on sparse representation for two-dimensional bar code images. Considering the features of two-dimensional bar code images, Kirsch and LBP (local binary pattern) operators are used to extract the edge gradient and texture features. Feature extraction is constituted based on these two features and additional two second-order derivatives. By joint dictionary learning of the low-resolution and high-resolution image patch pairs, the sparse representation of corresponding patches is the same. In addition, the global constraint is exerted on the initial estimation of high-resolution image which makes the reconstructed result closer to the real one. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for two-dimensional bar code images by comparing with other reconstruction algorithms.

A Sparse Point Representation(SPR) based on interpolation wavelets is presented. The SPR is implemented for the purpose of CFD data compression. Unlike conventional wavelet transformation, the SPR relieves computing workload in the similar fashion of lifting scheme that includes splitting and prediction procedures in sequence. However, SPR skips update procedure that is major part of lifting scheme. Data compression can be achieved by proper thresholding method. The advantage of the SPR method is that, by keeping even point physical values, low frequency filtering procedure is omitted and its related unphysical thresholing mechanism can be avoided in reconstruction process. Extra singular feature detection algorithm is implemented for preserving singular features such as shock and vortices. Several numerical tests show the adequacy of SPR for the CFD data. It is also shown that it can be easily extended to nonlinear adaptive wavelets for enhanced feature capturing.

It is well known that sparse code is effective for feature extraction of face recognition, especially sparse mode can be learned in the kernel space, and obtain better performance. Some recent algorithms made use of single kernel in the sparse mode, but this didn't make full use of the kernel information. The key issue is how to select the suitable kernel weights, and combine the selected kernels. In this paper, we propose a novel multiple kernel sparse representation based classification for face recognition (MKSRC), which performs sparse code and dictionary learning in the multiple kernel space. Initially, several possible kernels are combined and the sparse coefficient is computed, then the kernel weights can be obtained by the sparse coefficient. Finally convergence makes the kernel weights optimal. The experiments results show that our algorithm outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms and demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed algorithms.
Visual object tracking is a fundamental problem in the field of computer vision, as it needs a proper model to account for drastic appearance changes that are caused by shape, textural, and illumination variations. In this paper, we propose a feature-based visual-object-tracking method with a sparse representation. Generally, most appearance-based models use the gray-scale pixel values of the input image, but this might be insufficient for a description of the target object under a variety of conditions. To obtain the proper information regarding the target object, the following combination of features has been exploited as a corresponding representation: First, the features of the target templates are extracted by using the HOG (histogram of gradient) and LBPs (local binary patterns); secondly, a feature-based sparsity is attained by solving the minimization problems, whereby the target object is represented by the selection of the minimum reconstruction error. The strengths of both features are exploited to enhance the overall performance of the tracker; furthermore, the proposed method is integrated with the particle-filter framework and achieves a promising result in terms of challenging tracking videos.
When analyzing high dimensional data such as text data, if we input all the variables as explanatory variables, statistical learning procedures may suffer from over-fitting problems. Furthermore, computational efficiency can deteriorate with a large number of variables. Dimensionality reduction techniques such as feature selection or feature extraction are useful for dealing with these problems. The sparse principal component analysis (SPCA) is one of the regularized least squares methods which employs an elastic net-type objective function. The SPCA can be used to remove insignificant principal components and identify important variables from noisy observations. In this study, we propose a dimension reduction procedure for text data based on the SPCA. Applying the proposed procedure to real data, we find that the reduced feature set maintains sufficient information in text data while the size of the feature set is reduced by removing redundant variables. As a result, the proposed procedure can improve classification accuracy and computational efficiency, especially for some classifiers such as the k-nearest neighbors algorithm.
In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed for three-dimensional (3D) shape recognition using local features of model views and its sparse representation. The algorithm starts with the normalization of 3D models and the extraction of 2D views from uniformly distributed viewpoints. Consequently, the 2D views are stacked over each other to from view cubes. The algorithm employs the descriptors of 3D local features in the view cubes after applying Gabor filters in various directions as the initial features for 3D shape recognition. In the training stage, we store some 3D local features to build the prototype dictionary of local features. To extract an intermediate feature vector, we measure the similarity between the local descriptors of a shape model and the local features of the prototype dictionary. We represent the intermediate feature vectors of 3D models in the sparse domain to obtain the final descriptors of the models. Finally, support vector machine classifiers are used to recognize the 3D models. Experimental results using the Princeton Shape Benchmark database showed the average recognition rate of 89.7% using 20 views. We compared the proposed approach with state-of-the-art approaches and the results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper studies synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging problem which the scatterers are often distributed in block sparse pattern. To exploiting the sparse geometrical feature, a Kronecker constrained SAR imaging algorithm is proposed by combining the block sparse characteristics with the multiway sparse reconstruction framework with Tucker modeling. We validate the proposed algorithm via real data and it shows that the our algorithm can achieve better accuracy and convergence than the reference methods even in the demanding environment. Meanwhile, the complexity is smaller than that of the existing methods. The simulation experiments confirmed the effectiveness of the algorithm as well.
In this paper, feature extraction methods, which is one field of reducing dimensions of high-dimensional data, are empirically investigated. We selected the traditional PCA(Principal Component Analysis), ICA(Independent Component Analysis), NMF(Non-negative Matrix Factorization), and sNMF(Sparse NMF) for comparisons. ICA has a similar feature with the simple cell of V1. NMF implemented a "parts-based representation in the brain" and sNMF is a improved version of NMF. In order to visually investigate the extracted features, handwritten digits are handled. Also, the extracted features are used to train multi-layer perceptrons for recognition test. The characteristic of each feature extraction method will be useful when applying feature extraction methods to many real-world problems.

Representation based classification, kernel method and sparse representation have received much attention in the field of face recognition. In this paper, we proposed an improved kernel principal component analysis method based on sparse representation to improve the accuracy and robustness for face recognition. First, the distances between the test sample and all training samples in kernel space are estimated based on collaborative representation. Second, S training samples with the smallest distances are selected, and Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA) is used to extract the features that are exploited for classification. The proposed method implements the sparse representation under ℓ2 regularization and performs feature extraction twice to improve the robustness. Also, we investigate the relationship between the accuracy and the sparseness coefficient, the relationship between the accuracy and the dimensionality respectively. The comparative experiments are conducted on the ORL, the GT and the UMIST face database. The experimental results show that the proposed method is more effective and robust than several state-of-the-art methods including Sparse Representation based Classification (SRC), Collaborative Representation based Classification (CRC), KCRC and Two Phase Test samples Sparse Representation (TPTSR).

Underwater Acoustic Channels (UAC) have inherent sparse characteristics. The traditional adaptive equalization techniques do not utilize this feature to improve the performance. In this paper we consider the Variable Adaptive Subgradient Projection (V-ASPM) method to derive a new sparse equalization algorithm based on the Minimum Symbol Error Rate (MSER) criterion. Compared with the original MSER algorithm, our proposed scheme adds sparse matrix to the iterative formula, which can assign independent step-sizes to the equalizer taps. How to obtain such proper sparse matrix is also analyzed. On this basis, the selection scheme of the sparse matrix is obtained by combining the variable step-sizes and equalizer sparsity measure. We call the new algorithm Sparse-Control Proportional-MSER (SC-PMSER) equalizer. Finally, the proposed SC-PMSER equalizer is embedded into a turbo receiver, which perform turbo decoding, Digital Phase-Locked Loop (DPLL), time-reversal receiving and multi-reception diversity. Simulation and real-field experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance in convergence speed and Bit Error Rate (BER).
