Flexural analysis of thermally actuated fiber reinforced shape memory polymer composite

  • Shape Memory Polymer Composites (SMPC) have gained popularity over the last few decades due to its flexible shape memory behaviour over wide range of strains and temperatures. In this paper, non-linear bending analysis has been carried out for SMPC beam under the application of uniformly distributed transverse load (UDL). Simplified C0 continuity Finite Element Method (FEM) based on Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory (HSDT) has been adopted for flexural analysis of SMPC. The numerical solutions are obtained by iterative Newton Raphson method. Material properties of SMPC with Shape Memory Polymer (SMP) as matrix and carbon fibre as reinforcements, have been calculated by theory of volume averaging. Effect of temperature on SMPC has been evaluated for numerous parameters for instance number of layers, aspect ratio, boundary conditions, volume fraction of carbon fiber and laminate stacking orientation. Moreover, deflection profile over unit length and behavior of stresses across thickness are also presented to elaborate the effect of glass transition temperature (Tg). Present study provides detailed explanation on effect of different parameters on the bending of SMPC beam for large strain over a broad span of temperature from 273-373K, which encompasses glass transition region of SMPC.

Finite element modeling of contact between an elastic layer and two elastic quarter planes

  • In this study, a two dimensional model of receding contact problem has been analyzed using finite element method (FEM) based software ANSYS and ABAQUS. For this aim finite element modeling of elastic layer and two homogeneous, isotropic and symmetrical elastic quarter planes pressed by means of a rigid circular punch has been presented. Mass forces and friction are neglected in the solution. Since the problem is examined for the plane state, the thickness along the z-axis direction is taken as a unit. In order to check the accuracy of the present models, the obtained results are compared with the available results of the open literature as well as the results of two software are compared using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and good agreements are found. Numerical analyses are performed considering different values of the external load, rigid circular radius, quarter planes span length and material properties. The contact lengths and contact stresses of these values are examined, and their results are presented. Consequently, it is concluded that the considered non-dimensional quantities have noteworthy influence on the contact lengths and contact stress distributions, additionally if FEM analysis is used correctly, it can be an efficient alternative method to the analytical solutions that need time.

휨 모멘트에 대한 오이의 응력이완(應力弛緩) 특성(特性) (Stress Relaxation Properties of Cucumber under Bending Moment)

  • Stress relaxation behaviors of the cucumber under bending moment were tested with UTM at three levels of loading rate and initial deflection ratio. Sample cucumber was selected from three cultivars of cucumber, Cheongjangmadi, Baekdadagi, and Gyeousalicheongjang, because these cultivars are the most popular grown cultivars in Korea. When the bending moment was applied to the cucumber sample, the effective span between simple supports was held a constant value of 116mm with consideration of the selected sample length. The objectives of this study were to develop the rheological models such as linear and nonlinear models of the stress relaxation for the cucumber samples, and to investigate the effects of loading rate and initial deflection ratio on the stress relaxation behavior of the cucumber. The results of this study may be summarized as follows : 1. Stress relaxation behavior of the cucumber could be well described by the generalized Maxwell model for each level of deflection ratio. But the stress relaxation behavior of the sample was found to be initial deflection ratio and time dependent, and it was represented the nonlinear viscoelastic model as a function of initial deflection ratio and time. 2. Stress relaxation behavior of the cucumber samples was very highly affected by the loading rate and the initial deflection ratio. The more loading rate and initial deflection ratio resulted in the more initial bending stress and after stress relaxation progressed more rapidly. 3. At the same test conditions, it was found that the stress relaxation rate of Cheongjangmadi was faster than that of other cultivars.

Construction stage analysis of three-dimensional cable-stayed bridges

  • In this paper, nonlinear static analysis of three-dimensional cable stayed bridges is performed for the time dependent materials properties such as creep, shrinkage and aging of concrete and relaxation of cable. Manavgat Cable-Stayed Bridge is selected as an application. The bridge located in Antalya, Turkey, was constructed with balanced cantilever construction method. Total length of the bridge is 202 m. The bridge consists of one $\ddot{e}$ shape steel tower. The tower is at the middle of the bridge span. The construction stages and 3D finite element model of bridge are modeled with SAP2000. Large displacement occurs in these types of bridges so geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration in the analysis by using P-Delta plus large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Two different finite element analyses carried out which are evaluated with and without construction stages and results are compared with each other. As a result of these analyses, variation of internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge tower and displacement and bending moment for bridge deck are given with detailed. It is seen that construction stage analysis has a remarkable effect on the structural behavior of the bridge.

Experimental study on the cable rigidness and static behaviors of AERORail structure

  • This paper presented a new aerial platform-AERORail for rail transport and its structure evolution based on the elastic stiffness of cable; through the analysis on the cable properties when the cable supported a small service load with high-tensile force, summarized the theoretical basis of the AERORail structure and the corresponding simplified analysis model. There were 60 groups of experiments for a single naked cable model under different tensile forces and different services loads, and 48 groups of experiments for the cable with rail combined structure model. The experimental results of deflection characteristics were compared with the theoretical values for these two types of structures under the same conditions. It proved that the results almost met the classical cable theory. The reason is that a small deflection was required when this structure was applied. After the tension increments tests with moving load, it is verified that the relationships between the structure stiffness and tension force and service load are simple. Before further research and applications are made, these results are necessary for the determination of the reasonable and economic tensile force, allowable service load for the special span length for this new platform.

Optimization of domes against instability

  • Static stability is a decisive factor in the design of domes. Stability-related external factors, such as load and supports, are incorporated into structural vulnerability theory by the definition of a relative rate of joint well-formedness ($r_r$). Hence, the instability mechanism of domes can be revealed. To improve stability, an optimization model against instability, which takes the maximization of the lowest $r_r$ ($r_{r,min}$) as the objective and the discrete member sections as the variables, is established with constraints on the design requirements and steel consumption. Optimizations are performed on two real-life Kiewitt-6 model domes with a span of 23.4 m and rise of 11.7 m, which are initially constructed for shaking table collapse test. Well-formedness analyses and stability calculation (via arc-length method) of the models throughout the optimization history demonstrate that this proposed method can effectively enhance $r_{r,min}$ and optimize the static stability of shell-like structures. Additionally, seismic performance of the optimum models subjected to the same earthquake as in the shaking table test is checked. The supplemental simulations prove that the optimum models are superior to the original models under earthquake load as well.

Wing Design Optimization of a Solar-HALE Aircraft

  • We develop a preliminary design optimization procedure in this paper regarding the wing planform in a solar-powered high-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle. A high-aspect-ratio wing has been widely adopted in this type of a vehicle, due to both the high lift-to-drag ratio and lightweight design. In the preliminary design, its characteristics need to be addressed correctly, and analyzed in an appropriate manner. In this paper, we use the three-dimensional Euler equation to analyze the wing aerodynamics. We also use an advanced structural modeling approach based on a geometrically exact one-dimensional beam analysis. Regarding the structural integrity of the wing, we determine detailed configuration parameters, specifically the taper ratio and the span length. Next, we conduct a multi-objective optimization scheme based on the response surface method, using the present baseline configuration. We consider the structural integrity as one of the constraints. We reduce the wing weight by approximately 25.3 % from that in the baseline configuration, and also decrease the power required approximately 3.4 %. We confirm that the optimized wing has sufficient flutter margin and improved static longitudinal/directional stability characteristics, as compared to those of the baseline configuration.

중공부가 있는 다단계 긴장 PSC 거더의 동특성 실험 및 해석 (Dynamic Test and Analysis of Multilevel Post-tensioned PSC Girder with Holed Web)

  • 복부에 중공부가 있는 PSC 거더는 여러 가지 이점이 있다. 중공부에 정착부를 두어 프리스트레싱힘을 단계적으로 도입할 수 있으며 길이가 동일한 경우 거더의 중량을 줄일 수가 있고, 같은 중량인 경우 경간을 더 늘일 수 있다. 그리고 빔에 의한 조망권의 간섭도 줄일 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 복부에 여러 개의 원형 개구부를 가지고 있는 50m 실물 다단계 긴장 PSC 거더를 제작하여 모달테스트를 수행하였다. 모달테스트를 위한 가진방법으로 거더의 중앙에 가진기를 설치하여 일정 주파수 단위로 가진시킴으로써 정확한 주파수응답을 얻고자 하였다. 얻어진 주파수응답을 FFT와 PSD를 통하여 거더의 고유진동수와 감쇠비를 추정하였고 이를 Midas FEA를 이용한 해석결과와 비교하였다.

균일한 단면 높이를 갖고 FCM 공법으로 시공되는 PC 세그멘탈교량의 거동에 대한 휨강성의 영향 (Flexural Stiffness Effects on Constant Depth PC Segmental Bridge Constructed by Free Cantilever Method)

  • PC 세그멘탈교량은 경간장이 매우 큰 경우를 제외하고는 세그멘트 생산의 경제성을 위하여 교량 전체가 일정한 높이를 갖는 것이 일반적이며, 단면의 강성변화를 위해서는 단면의 내부치수를 조정하는 것이 보통이다. 구조물의 예비설계단계에서는 과거의 경험이나 근사적인 단면력에 의하여 단면을 선택하는 것이 일반적이므로, 균일 높이를 갖는 PC 콘크리트교량의 예비설계단계에서의 단면력 산정지침을 위하여 강성이 다른 세가지 교량모델을 택하여 휨강성이 단면력에 주는 영향을 검토하였다. 교량모델의 휨강성은 실제적으로 사용가능한 단면을 경간장과 함께 분석하여 얻은 Flexibility Index로 결정하였다.

금속 벨로우즈 Diaphragm용 CAD 프로그램 개발 (A Development of CAD Program for Metal Bellows Diaphragm)

  • A CAD program for metal bellows diaphragm was developed in this study. This program was written in AutoLISP on the AutoCAD system with a personal computer. Basic design concept used in this program is composition of a convolution that is tangent to two lines and 5 circles from given design parameters(initial radius, inner and outer diameter, thickness, pitch, etc.). The effects of altering some design parameters on stress distribution and fatigue life of bellows were estimated using commercial FEM code, NISAII. As a result, the metal bellows diaphragm was successfully designed by the CAD program. It is used to model a bellows geometry in pre-processor of FEM code. The FEM result shows that stress is dependent on straight line length, bellows diameter with same span, and fatigue life is also affected by design parameters.
