This paper presents results from experimental and numerical studies on the response of steel-concrete composite box bridge girders under certain localized fire exposure conditions. Two composite box bridge girders, a simply supported girder and a continuous girder respectively, were tested under simultaneous loading and fire exposure. The simply supported girder was exposed to fire over 40% of its span length in the middle zone, and the two-span continuous girder was exposed to fire over 38% of its length of the first span and full length of the second span. A measurement method based on comparative rate of deflection was provided to predict the failure time in the hogging moment zone of continuous composite box bridge girders under certain localized fire exposure condition. Parameters including transverse and longitudinal stiffeners and fire scenarios were introduced to investigate fire resistance of the composite box bridge girders. Test results show that failure of the simply supported girder is governed by the deflection limit state, whereas failure of the continuous girder occurs through bending buckling of the web and bottom slab in the hogging moment zone. Deflection based criterion may not be reliable in evaluating failure of continuous composite box bridge girder under certain fire exposure condition. The fire resistance (failure time) of the continuous girder is higher than that of the simply supported girder. Data from fire tests is successfully utilized to validate a finite element based numerical model for further investigating the response of composite box bridge girders exposed to localized fire. Results from numerical analysis show that fire resistance of composite box bridge girders can be highly influenced by the spacing of longitudinal stiffeners and fire severity. The continuous composite box bridge girder with closer longitudinal stiffeners has better fire resistance than the simply composite box bridge girder. It is concluded that the fire resistance of continuous composite box bridge girders can be significantly enhanced by preventing the hogging moment zone from exposure to fire. Longitudinal stiffeners with closer spacing can enhance fire resistance of composite box bridge girders. The increase of transverse stiffeners has no significant effect on fire resistance of composite box bridge girders.
The escalating settlements observed in concrete slab tracks pose a significant challenge in Korea, raising concerns about their adverse impact on the safe operation of high-speed railways and the substantial costs involved in restoration. A primary contributor to these settlements is identified as the utilization of rock materials sourced from tunnel construction, incorporated into the lower subgrade without the requisite soil mixing to achieve an appropriate particle size distribution. This study employs numerical analysis to evaluate the efficacy of partial reinforcement in reducing settlements in rock-filled lower subgrades. Column-shaped reinforcement areas strategically positioned at regular intervals in the lower subgrade induce soil arching in the upper subgrade, leading to a concentration of soil loads on the reinforced areas and consequent settlement reduction. The analysis employs finite element methods to investigate the influence of the size, stiffness, and spacing of the reinforced areas on settlement reduction in the lower subgrade. The numerical results guide the formulation of an optimal design approach, proposing a method to determine the minimum spacing required for reinforcements to effectively limit settlements within acceptable bounds. This research contributes valuable insights into addressing the challenges associated with settlement in concrete slab tracks, offering a basis for informed decision-making in railway infrastructure management.
When a non-persistent joint system is formed in a large-scale rock slope, slope failure may occur due to presence of a the stepped sliding surface. Such a surface can be divided into joint-to-joint sliding surfaces or joint-to-rock bridge sliding surfaces. In the latter case, the rock bridge provides shear resistance parallel to the joint and tensile resistance perpendicular to the joint. The load of the sliding rock can lead to failure of the rock bridge, thereby connecting the two joints at each ends of the bridge and resulting in step-path failure of the slope. If each rock bridge on a slope has the same length, the tensile strength is lower than the shear strength, resulting in the rock bridges oriented perpendicular to the joint being more prone to failure. In addition, the smaller the ratio of discontinuity spacing to length, the greater the likelihood of step-path failure. To assess the risk of stepped sliding on a rock slope with non-persistent joints, stability analysis can be performed using limit equilibrium analysis or numerical analysis. This involves constructing a step-path failure surface through a systematic discontinuity survey and analysis.

The number of deaths for railway traffic accidents is mainly caused by working close to the track, or when unauthorized passage pass through the track. The safety fences are being used to ensure safety for workers close to the track, and to improve the efficiency of the work, without interfering with the passage of trains. However, a safety fence for railway tracks needs to be examined to see if it will interfere with the passage of trains. The purpose of this study is to analyze the safe distance between train and safety fence developed in Korea. In addition, the lateral load condition of wind pressure by trains is estimated and numerical analysis is carried out according to the installation intervals of railway safety fences. It has been confirmed that the proper spacing between the train and the railway safety fence should be at least 200 mm from the vehicle limit, and that the proper spacing of railway safety fence must be calculated in consideration of the wind pressure by trains.

Liquid ejectors are widely used as marine pumps, inducer stage for the boiler feed water pump, boiler recirculating pump, cooling water recirculating pump in boiling water type nuclear reactor and a deep well pump, because of their high working confidence and simplicity. Furthermore, it requires only a modest net positive suction head for cavitation-free operation and it can be installed in remote location from mechanical power source. It is not easy to presume the friction losses, because it is complicately affected by area ratio, flowrate ratio, nozzle spacing, throat length, shape of liquid ejector and so on. Therefore, the optimization of liquid ejector design is still dependent, to a large extent, on the experimental results and empirical procedures. On the design of the liquid ejector, the area ratio and the nondimensional throat length are the most important design factors among the mentioned above. In this experiment, the effects of the area ratio and the nondimensional throat length to ejector efficiency are carried out systematically by the combination of 4 kinds of motive nozzle and 2 kinds of throat length. In this paper, the present experimental results are compared with the calculated ones by the previous computer aided design program based on one dimensional flow equation. And also, an empirical equation for the working limit of liquid ejector is reported.

Since the propagation of a short fatigue crack is directly related to the large crack which causes the fracture of bulk specimen, the detailed study on the propagation of the short crack is essential to prevent the fatigue fracture. However, a number of recent studies have demonstrated that the short crack can grow at a low applied stress level which are predicted from the threshold condition of large crack. In present study, the threshold condition for the propagation of short fatigue crack is examined with respect to the microstructure and cyclic loading history. Specimens employed in this study were decarburized eutectoid steels which have various decarburized ferrite volume fraction. Rotating bending fatigue test was carried out on these specimens with the special emphasis on the '||'&'||'quot;critical non-propagating crack length.'||'&'||'quot; It is found that the reduction of the endurance limit of their particular microstructures can be due to the increase of the length of critical non-propagating crack, and the quantitative relationship between the threshold stress .DELTA. .sigma. $_{th}$ and the critical non-propagating crack length Lc can be written as .DELTA. .sigma. $_{th}$, Lc=C where m, C is constant. Further experiments were carried out on the effect of pearlitic structure and cyclic loading history on the length of critical non-propagating crack. It is shown that the length of critical non-propagating crack is closely related to both pearlite interlamellar spacing and cyclic loading history.ory. cyclic loading history.
Limit equilibrium method is widely used for the stability analysis of soil slopes. In jointed rock slopes however, the failure of the slope is largely dependent upon the strength and deformability of the joints in the rock mass and quite often failure occurs along the joints. This paper describes the use of ubiquitous joint model for the stability analysis of the jointed rock slopes. This model is essentially an anisotropic elasto-plastic model and can simulate two sets of joint in arbitrary orientations. Validation of the developed with the factor of safety equal to unity was selected when the shape of the failure plane is assumed log spiral. Then the factor of safety of the rock slope having two perpendicular joint sets was calculated while rotating joint orientations. Rusults were compared with limit equilibrium solutions on soil slopes having equivalent soil properties when plane sliding was assumed. Developed model predicted the factor of safety of jointed rock slope in a reasonable accuracy when joint spacing is sufficiently small.
Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has been developed to overcome the low strengths and brittleness of conventional concrete. Considering that UHPC, owing to its composition and the use of steel fibers, develops a compressive strength of 180 MPa as well as high stiffness, the top flange of the steel girder may be superfluous in the composite beam combining a slab made of UHPC and the steel girder. In such composite beam, the steel girder takes the form of an inverted-T shaped structure without top flange in which the studs needed for the composition of the steel girder with the UHPC slab are disposed in the web of the steel girder. This study investigates experimentally and analytically the flexural behavior of this new type of composite beam to propose details like stud spacing and slab thickness for further design recommendations. To that goal, eight composite beams with varying stud spacing and slab thickness were fabricated and tested. The test results indicated that stud spacing running from 100 mm to 2 to 3 times the slab thickness can be recommended. In view of the relative characteristic slip limit of Eurocode-4, the results showed that the composite beam developed ductile behavior. Moreover, except for the members with thin slab and large stud spacing, most of the specimens exhibited results different to those predicted by AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode-4 because of the high performance developed by UHPC.

Superparamagnetic regions and magnetic anisotropic properties in randomly orientated Co nano dots(NDs) were investigated as a function of dot diameter, spacing, and density. The Co NDs were fabricated by intentionally exposing a laser source on ultra thin film. Various dot sizes are ultimately realized by changing laser power, scan condition, and intial film thickness. Magnetic hysteresis loops, angle-dependent magnetization, and temperature dependence magnetization of the Co NDs were measured with a superconducting quantum interference device. The analysis of magnetization and hysteresis loops was effectively used to determine superparamagnetic regions of the Co NDs. Up to now, the experimentally observed results repeal that room temperature superparamagnetic limit of our Co NDs was about 30 nm in diameter, with the confirmation of high resolution transmission electron microscope.

One of the biggest problems affecting bridges is the transverse cracking and deterioration of concrete bridge decks. The causes of early age cracking are primarily attributed to plastic shrinkage, temperature effects, autogenous shrinkage, and drying shrinkage. The cracks can be influenced by material characteristics, casting sequence, formwork, climate conditions, geometry, and time dependent factors. The cracking of bridge decks not only creates unsightly aesthetic condition but also greatly reduces durability. It leads to a loss of functionality, loss of stiffness, and ultimately loss of structural safety. This investigation consists of field, laboratory, and analytical phases. The experimental and field testing investigate the early age transverse cracking of bridge decks and evaluate the use of sealant materials. The research identifies suitable materials, for crack sealing, with an ability to span cracks of various widths and to achieve performance criteria such as penetration depth, bond strength, and elongation. This paper also analytically examines the effect of a wide range of parameters on the development of cracking such as the number of spans, the span length, girder spacing, deck thickness, concrete compressive strength, dead load, hydration, temperature, shrinkage, and creep. The importance of each parameter is identified and then evaluated. Also, the AASHTO Standard Specification limits liveload deflections to L/800 for ordinary bridges and L/1000 for bridges in urban areas that are subject to pedestrian use. The deflection is found to be an important parameter to affect cracking. A set of recommendations to limit the transverse deck cracks in bridge decks is also presented.
