  • Direct numerical simulation database of an axial turbulent boundary layer is used to compute frequency and wave number spectra of the wall shear-stress fluctuations in a low-Reynolds number axial turbulent boundary layer. One-dimensional and two-dimensional power spectra of flow variables are calculated and compared. At low wave numbers and frequencies, the power of streamwise shear stress is larger than that of spanwise shear stress, while the powers of both stresses are almost the same at high wave numbers and frequencies. The frequency/streamwise wave number spectra of the wall flow variables show that large-scale fluctuations to the ms value is largest for the streamwise shear stress, while that of small-scale fluctuations to the rms value is largest for pressure. In the two-point auto-correlations, negative correlation occurs in streamwise separations for pressure and spanwise shear stress, and in spanwise correlation for both shear stresses.

  • We present an algorithm for the fast computation of the general N-point spatial correlation functions of any discrete point set embedded within an Euclidean space of ${\mathbb{R}}n$. Utilizing the concepts of kd-trees and graph databases, we describe how to count all possible N-tuples in binned configurations within a given length scale, e.g. all pairs of points or all triplets of points with side lengths < rmax. Through benchmarking we show the computational advantage of our new graph-based algorithm over more traditional methods. We show that all 3-point configurations up to and beyond the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation scale (~200 Mpc in physical units) can be performed on current Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data in reasonable time. Finally we present the first measurements of the 4-point correlation function of ~0.5 million SDSS galaxies over the redshift range 0.43< z <0.7. We present the publicly available code GRAMSCI (GRAph Made Statistics for Cosmological Information; bitbucket.org/csabiu/gramsci), under a GNU General Public License.

  • The demand for the re-painting of steel bridges is increasing, but surface treatment is still centered on human resources for on-site re-painting processes. Worker safety accidents continue to occur because the work is performed in a narrow space. Recently, PS balls with excellent surface treatment have been used for blasting, but the working environment is poor due to the large amount of dust generated. In this study, an effective surface treatment method using impeller blasting equipment was developed. The correlation between steel ball size, impeller rotation speed, and exposure time was studied to optimize the efficiency of the surface treatment.

  • Since there are two-different observational constraints for the lunar exosphere data, it is interesting to find the best exospheric model that can account for the observed characteristics of the lunar coma and tail simultaneously (Lee & Kim, 2017).The characteristics of the lunar exosphere can be constrained by comparing simulated models with observational data of the coma and tail. In this work, considering effects of triple sodium sources (two dayside sources: a low- and a high-velocity component; and an Isotropic source component), we present time-dependent simulations showing initial conditions around the lunar coma and the final stage of the lunar tail. Based on an updated 3-D lunar exosphere model (Lee & Kim, 2017), we are presenting the simulated images of the lunar sodium coma and its correlation with lunar tail's physical parameters.

  • The hypersonic flow on the stagnation streamline of a blunt body is analyzed with quasi one-dimensional (1-D) Navier-Stokes equations approximated by adopting the local similarity to the two-dimensional (2-D)/axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations. The governing equations are solved using the implicit finite volume method. The computational domain is confined from the stagnation point to the shock wave, and the shock fitting method is used to find the shock position. We propose a boundary condition at the shock, which employs the shock wave angle in the vicinity of the stagnation streamline using the shock shape correlation. As a result of numerical computation conducted for the hypersonic flow over a sphere, the proposed boundary condition is shown to improve the accuracy of the prediction of the shock standoff distance. The quasi 1-D Navier-Stokes code is efficient in computing time and is reliable for the flow analysis along the stagnation streamline and the prediction of heat flux at the stagnation point in the hypersonic blunt body flow.

  • This study examined the empirical meaning of skylight in underground space, and for this purpose, 29 questions were drawn, consisting of technical performance, functional performance, and behavioral performance. In addition, under the assumption that the meaning of the skylight will be clearly revealed through the comparison between the underground streets with and without the skylight, three underground streets with the skylight and three underground streets without the skylight of Japan were selected as the subjects of the study. Based on the results of the survey, descriptive statistical analysis and frequency analysis were conducted, and an independent sample T-test was conducted for each analysis, and correlation analysis was conducted to derive improvement priority. As a result of the analysis, it was found that skylight had a certain effect on the sense of time and imageability inside the underground commercial space. In addition, it was analyzed that skylight exerted important function in the qualitative aspect of underground commercial space. Lastly, the improvement rankings for three underground streets without skylight were derived in the order of sign/guide map, space diversity, maintenance, rest space, and floor design. The improvement rankings for three underground streets with skylight were drawn in order of resting space, diversity of space, temperature and humidity, air, and maintenance.

  • A new antenna shuffling scheme for double space time transmit diversity is proposed. The proposed method obtains the shuffling pattern directly from the estimated channel by maximizing minimum post-processing signal to noise ratio(SNR), while the conventional method minimizes channel correlation. Since the minimum post-processing SNR is directly related with error performance, the proposed method shows better bit error rate performance than the conventional method. Monte Carlo simulations showed that the proposed scheme has more 3 dB SNR gain than the conventional scheme for 10/sup -3/ bit error rate in spatially correlated fadingcaused by a single cluster model.

  • Background and objective: Particulate matter (PM) has a fatal effect on health. There have been many studies on the use of plants such as trees and shrubs as eco-friendly and sustainable biofilter for the removal of PM. In forming more green space, ground cover plants play an important role in multi-layered planting. This study was conducted to investigate the ability of plants to reduce PM, targeting Korean native ground cover plants with high availability in urban green spaces. Methods: For 4 species of Asteraceae, 4 species of Liliaceae, and 3 species of Rosaceae, one species of plants at a time were placed in an acrylic chamber (800 × 800 × 1000 mm, L × W × H) modeling an indoor space. After the injection of PM, the amount of PM remaining in the chamber over time was investigated. Results: For all three types of PM (PM10, PM2.5, PM1), significant difference occurred in the amount of PM remaining between plant species after 1 hour in the Liliaceae chamber, 3 hours in the Asteraceae chamber, and 5 hours in the Rosaceae chamber. With Liliaceae, the leaf area and the amount of PM remaining in the chamber showed a negative (-) correlation. With the Asteraceae and Rosaceae, there was a weak negative correlation between the leaf area and the amount of PM remaining in the chamber. Conclusion: When using ground cover plants as a biofilter to remove PM, it is considered effective to select a species with a large total leaf area, especially for Liliaceae.
