  • The steady-state aerodynamic characteristics of wings on the formation flight were analyzed using the Vortex Lattice Method. When two wings were at formation flight, the sectional lift coefficient of a rear wing was increased due to a front wing. The result showed that the lift drag ratio increased as the rear wing were placed downward and decreased as the lateral spacing between wings increased. The difference of lift drag ratio between forward wing and rear wing increase as the aspect ratio of wings increased. When a rear wings and a forward wings placed at the same height, wings on the formation flight had the maximum lift drag ratio. The results showed that the benefit of the formation flight increased as the number of wings on the formation flight increased.

  • The first Korean liquid propellant rocket KSR-III successfully finished its flight test on Nov. 28, 2002. Herein, we summarize the results of range safety system operation which is employed for the first time in flight tests of rockets developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI). During the flight, safety-critical flight data including instantaneous impact points are monitored in realtime by range safety officers utilizing Range Safety Display Systems. The recorded screen of the display system is presented for the explanation of safety operation. In addition, comparisons are made between onboard navigation system based and radar based results in calculating instantaneous impact points, and also errors from the finally recorded impact point are described.

  • The flutter/vibroacoustic characteristics can be acquired by conducting flight tests with various conditions for a long period of test. Accordingly it is indispensable to build a specially designed database system to efficiently accumulate the enormous data obtained from flight tests. Hence, T-50 Flight Test Database System(FTDS) based on MS-Access is developed to handle the flutter/vibroacoustic environment data obtained from flight tests. The developed system is structured with the items related to aircraft flight test, the tables composed of the relevant items and a relational database logically connecting the tables. The T-50 FTDS is implemented with data searching GUI(Graphic User Interface) programed with Visual Basic and Structured Query Language to make intuitive searches over the stored data. The developed system has been used for accumulating the flutter/vibroacoustic data and verifying vibroacoustic Specifications.

  • This paper presents an autonomous formation flight algorithm for micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) and its flight test results. Since MAVs have severe limits on the payload and flight time, formation of MAVs can help alleviate the mission load of each MAV by sharing the tasks or coverage areas. The proposed formation guidance law is designed using nonlinear dynamic inversion method based on 'Leader-Follower' formation geometric relationship. The sensing of other vehicles in a formation is achieved by sharing the vehicles' states using a high-speed radio data link. the designed formation law was simulated with flight data of MAV to verify its robustness against sensor noises. A series of test flights were performed to validate the proposed formation guidance law. The test result shows that the proposed formation flight algorithm with inter-communication is feasible and yields satisfactory results.

  • The ground flight termination system(GFTS) could be used for the termination of launch vehicle in flight motion when the launch vehicle deviates from the designated route due to the system malfunction or failure as well as the launch vehicle can't be tracked by the ground tracking system. This paper introduces the basic concept and design of the ground flight termination system to be used for KSLV launch mission in NARO space center. In order to design the optimal ground flight termination system for KSLV launch application, the operational concept reflected on the flight trajectory and system characteristics of KSLV launch vehicle should be considered. Moreover the RF link budget analysis, and the analysis for system availability and reliability are done. Based on the analysis above, the each subsystem of ground flight termination to transmit the termination signal in stable is designed for KSLV launch mission.

  • With the advent of industry 4.0 technologies like the artificial intelligence and the autonomous flight, 'Urban Air Mobility (UAM)' is being considered as an effective alternative to resolve the ground urban traffic congestion. Accordingly, many companies in the world including Korea are investigating on the development of UAM vehicles and operation systems. In this study, after identifying and classifying the essential elements of the UAM operation, the UAM system operational concept has been derived, then detailed analyses for each element has been performed. Based on the conceptual analysis of the UAM operation system, UAM flight routes in Seoul and Gyeong-In area have been established and confirmed to be operable through the performance analysis of UAM vehicles. The flight route analysis in this study is expected to be applied to UAM flight routes establishment in various cities in the future.

  • It is rather difficult to improve flight control computer(FLCC) hardware(H/W) development schedule due to lack of commercial off-the-self(COTS) tools or target specific tools. Thus, it is suggested to develop an enhanced process utilizing modeling, simulation and virtual reality tools. This paper presents H/W design process enhancement tool(PET) for FLCC design requirements such as FLCC input/output(I/O) signal flow, I/O fault detection, failure management algorithm, circuit logic, PCB assembly configuration and installation utilizing simulation and visualization in virtual space. New tool will provide simulation capability of various FLCC design configuration including shop replaceable unit(SRU) level assembly/dis-assembly utilizing open flight format 3-D modeling data.

  • This technical paper deals the practical transformation algorithms between several lunar reference frames which will be used for Korea pathfinder lunar orbiter (KPLO) flight operation. Despite of various lunar reference frame definitions already exist, use of a common transformation algorithm while establishing lunar reference frame is very important for all members related to KPLO mission. This is because use of slight different parameters during frame transformation may result significant misleading while reprocessing data based on KPLO flight dynamics. Therefore, details of practical transformation algorithms for the KPLO mission specific lunar reference frames is presented with step by step implementation procedures. Examples of transformation results are also presented to support KPLO flight dynamics data user community which is expected to give practical guidelines while post processing the data as their needs. With this technical paper, common understandings of reference frames that will be used throughout not only the KPLO flight operation but also science data reprocessing can be established. It is expected to eliminate, or at least minimize, unnecessary confusion among all of the KPLO mission members including: Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as well as other organizations participating in KPLO payload development and operation, or further lunar science community world-wide who are interested in KPLO science data post processing.

  • The MOLIT is also establishing the flight safety standards for UAV within the current Aviation Law. Accordingly the required flight criteria includes operator location, mission operation limit, equipment, etc. which are the principle and standard applied based on the airspace use for UAV. Also, general flight rules, visual flight rules, instrument flight rules are required to be applied to the actual flight. Besides, an appliance regulation needs to be arranged regarding two-way communication, ATC and communication issue, airspace and area in-flight between UAS(Unmanned Aircraft System) users. An operation of the UAV in the air significantly requires the guarantee of the aircraft's capacity, and also the standardized flight criteria. A safe and smooth use is ensured only if this criteria is applied and understood by the entire airspace users. For the purpose, a standardized military UAV flight operations criteria and a law complementary scheme.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for switching LQ(Linear Quadratic) controllers designed at each flight envelope without a bump phenomenon. This algorithm is derived to apply to LQ controller more easily than existing implementation algorithm and is proposed to consider trim points of nonlinear models, which is adequate to real applications. This paper exemplifies the control performance improvement via simulations applied to LQ control of a supersonic test aircraft as a benchmark problem to test the proposed algorithm performance.
