  • The aeroelastic analysis of rotor blades with trailing edge flaps, focused on reducing vibration while minimizing control effort, are investigated using large deflection-type beam theory in forward flight. The rotor blade aerodynamic forces are calculated using two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory. For the analysis of forward flight, the nonlinear periodic blade steady response is obtained by integrating the full finite element equation in time through a coupled trim procedure with a vehicle trim. The objective function, which includes vibratory hub loads and active flap control inputs, is minimized by an optimal control process. Numerical simulations are performed for the steady-state forward flight of various advance ratios. Also, numerical results of the steady blade and flap deflections, and the vibratory hub loads are presented for various advance ratios and are compared with the previously published analysis results obtained from modal analysis based on a moderate deflection-type beam theory.

  • Nowadays, many kinds of research for airship have being studied withincrease of interests in airship. But these make little progress even now. In flighttest, the data acquisition from the actual flight test has lots of difficulties becausethe airship dynamic response is slow and sensitive to extemal environment. In thispaper, through the actual flight test, appropriateness of the mathematical dynamicmodel was presented by showing the test results in various conditions. Thetuming, the acceleration, and the deceleration motions were tested and analyzed.

  • New formation flight controller for unmanned aerial vehicles is proposed. A behavioral decentralized control approach called formation geometry center control is adopted. Trajectory tracking as well as formation geometry keeping are the purpose of the formation flight, and therefore two controllers are designed: a trajectory tracking controller for reference trajectory tracking, and a position controller for formation geometry keeping. Each controller is designed using Lyapunov stability theorem to guarantee the asymptotic stability. Formation flight controller is finally obtained by combining the trajectory tracking controller and the formation geometry keeping controller using a weighting parameter that depends on the relative distance error between unmanned aerial vehicles. Numerical simulations are performed to validate the performance of the proposed controller.

  • Automation of the key flight dynamics operations for the geostationary orbit satellite mission is analyzed and designed. The automation includes satellite orbit determination, orbit prediction, event prediction, and fuel accounting. An object-oriented analysis and design methodology is used for design of the automation system. Automation scenarios are investigated first and then the scenarios are allocated to use cases. Sequences of the use cases are diagramed. Then software components and graphical user interfaces are designed for automation. The automation will be applied to the Communication, Ocean, and Meteorology Satellite (COMS) flight dynamics system for daily routine operations.

  • Interplanetary scintillation-driven (IPS-driven) ENLIL model was jointly developed by University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and National Aeronaucics and Space Administration/Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA/GSFC). The model has been in operation by Korean Space Weather Cetner (KSWC) since 2014. IPS-driven ENLIL model has a variety of ambient solar wind parameters and the results of the model depend on the combination of these parameters. We have conducted researches to determine the best combination of parameters to improve the performance of the IPS-driven ENLIL model. The model results with input of 1,440 combinations of parameters are compared with the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) observation data. In this way, the top 10 parameter sets showing best performance were determined. Finally, the characteristics of the parameter sets were analyzed and application of the results to IPS-driven ENLIL model was discussed.

  • The basic quantitative tool for the study of hypersonic rarefied flows is the direct simulation Monte Carlo method (DSMC). The DSMC method requires a large amount of computer memory and performance and is unreasonably expensive at the first stage of spacecraft design and trajectory analysis. A possible solution to this problem is approximate engineering methods. However, the Monte Carlo method remains the most reliable approach to compare to the engineering methods that provide good results for the global aerodynamic coefficients of various geometry designs. This paper presents the calculation results of aerodynamic characteristics for spacecraft vehicles in the free molecular, the transitional and the continuum regimes using the local engineering method. Results and methods would be useful to calculate aerodynamics for new-generation hypersonic vehicle designs.

  • The NISS (Near-infrared Imaging Spectrometer for Star formation history) is the near-infrared spectro-photometric instrument optimized to the first Next Generation of small satellite (NEXTSat-1). The off-axis optics was developed to cover a wide field of view with 2 deg. ${\times}$ 2 deg. as well as a wide wavelength range from 0.95 to $2.5{\mu}m$. Considering the simple alignment scheme, afocal system was adapted in the optical components. The mechanical structures were tested under the space environment. We have obtained the accurate calibration data using our test facilities under the operational condition. After the final integration of flight model into the satellite, the communication with the satellite and the functional test were passed. The NISS will be launched in early 2018. During around 2-year operation, the spectro-photometric survey covering more than 100 square degree will be performed. To achieve the major scientific objectives for the study of the cosmic star formation in local and distant universe, the main observational targets will be nearby galaxies, galaxy clusters, star-forming regions and low background regions. Here, we report the final performance of the flight model of the NISS.
