  • Residential space has come to maintain a degree of specialization dependent upon the division of space according to function, while roles and functions have either expanded or ceased to exist corresponding to shifts in social values. However, various human behaviors connected to lifestyle habits and values are in fact becoming obsolete. This research will examine the mental, social, and functional aspects of the relationship between residential work spaces in modern homes and the sarangche as well as the communal space of daily and social life of the Chosun Dynasty to enhance the value and function of traditional residential space. As the boundary between family and work blurs with the home office environment of today, we are experiencing a deterioration of health and seeing problems in securing family domain as well as the prolonging of overwork. While the function of the traditional sarangchae encompassed a wider variety of activities than today's homes, the sarangchae achieved an efficient use of space divisions between rooms according to the particular purpose and situation. Accordingly, a reinterpretation of modern residential work space is needed through its connection to the sarangchae with consideration to the philosophy and values of the life of the noble class and the habits of our traditional lifestyle that have previously taken place within the sarangchae in an exterior space.

  • This study analyzed the time to understand the space and the contents of information to be memorized in the indoor space. Understanding the space and examining the memory will not only provide the basic data on which visual activities occur in user's perceiving the designed space but also expand the activity range of interior designer. The summary of the study results is as follows: First, with respect to gender difference, the results showed that males grasped the space in a relatively shorter time. Females showed more concentrated distribution range than males. Second, as for the proper time by accumulative sum across time, the results showed that it increased continuously until V time zone(120~150 seconds), it decreased rapidly after the V zone, which indicated that the proper gazing time for the indoor space as the target of this study is less than 150 seconds(effective gazing time). Third, in terms of efficiency of information acquisition, the results suggested that "60~90 seconds" are the effective time for acquiring the greatest amount of information. Fourth, regarding the information acquisition method, males were approximately 4.1%~0.1% lower in the evaluation through phrase and image. The evaluation of subjects through phrase than image was connected to more accurate information acquisition.

  • Recently general hospitals in Korea are focusing on healing environment which care for patients on the side of spirit and psychology without medical treatment. For the reason, architects are planning a public space on a large scale in which can be held cultural performances and artistic events. Those of social activities can be effective healing environment according to the "Anthroposophical medicine" studied by Rudolf Steiner. To the patient, Social healing environment is relation with normal life and back to the life. The case of a large-scale public space on hospital in foreign country shows the effect of healing environment through social community. So it is valuated as a social healing environment and community space. Even though the large-scale public space has been being increased in our circumstance, there is no evaluation of use on it. So there is no idea how people are satisfied with public space to stay and form a concourse by themselves. The purpose of this study is to find out the desire of people, who use the large-scale public space by analysis of observation research and interview in the general hospitals. And finally this study suggests the factors which can realize social healing environment on the planning of public space in hospital architecture.

  • The expansion of open education and the 7th revision of educational curriculum have brought big changes in the school facilities. In response to the integrated curriculum for the first and second grades of elementary school, various plans, such as open classroom, expanded classroom size, and the installation of multi-purpose space, have been attempted. However, such plans have appeared in the form of an open classroom--a uniform spatial composition. As a result, a plan for unit learning space to support the educational curriculum and activities for low grade levels is still insufficient. In the case of advanced countries, a lot of studies on space are being actively conducted to develop the creativity of children and to facilitate free-style learning, and such space is actually applied to a real educational environment. Therefore, this study will analyze the spatial composition of unit learning space for low grade level elementary schools in Korea. From the cases of advanced countries, a more concrete proposal will be suggested to diversify unit learning space for low grade levels.

  • This thesis examines the shape, organization, background, and significance of the classroom space in highly appraised elementary schools since the inauguration of public education in modern times in the fields of education or architecture. This thesis acknowledges that classroom shapes comprise an auditorium-like space for a large-scale study group, a square-shaped classroom designed for simultaneous teaching for single class, and bent and L-shaped classrooms for various learning activities. Whereas the square-shaped classroom for simultaneous teaching which has lasted until now evolved around 1870, the post-1930s era witnessed the emergence of a composition in which classroom and outside space are associated, of an atypical classroom, and of Functional Unit where common space and classrooms are assembled. It is deemed that the emergence of the atypical classroom comes from the reinterpretation of learning and space pursuant to progressive pedagogical philosophy and child development theories and functional architecture theories. Thus, this thesis verifies that school construction and learning space can be newly created and the synthesis between education, child development studies, and architecture is a prerequisite to such a creation.

  • This study surveys the degree of residents' satisfaction on the current street space to suggest alternatives for the improvement of the street space design in detached house areas. In the results of the survey, we find the following. First, in the result of analysis on age, residential term, having children or not, income level, and type of house ownership, residents are homogeneous in social and economic characteristics. There are similarity in geographical, locational conditions, neighboring facilities, deterioration of residential house, and the time of residential formation among residential areas. Second, satisfactory determinants of residents on street space according to street types, are maintenance, protection of privacy, and parking space. Third, satisfactory determinants of residents on street hierarchy is the inner circulation road while unsatisfactory one is the inner roads. Fourth, age, residential term and type of house ownership are significant factors influencing residents' satisfaction. Factors influencing satisfaction on street space are also affecting total satisfaction and factors associated with street environment are perceived more important ones than factors associated with street activities. Thus we find the degrees of satisfaction for residents on street type and street hierarchy are different despite that general characteristics of residents are similar. We also find residents consider street noise and maintenance as critical factor among physical factors of street space.

  • Among Solar activities' events, the geomagnetic storms are believed to cause the largest atmospheric effects. The geomagnetic storm is a complex process of solar wind/magnetospheric origin. It is well known to affect severely on the ionosphere. However, this effect of this complex process will maybe act at various altitudes in the atmosphere, even including the lower layer and the neutral middle atmosphere, particularly the stratosphere. Nowadays, the GPS-derived ZTD (zenith tropospheric delay) can be transformed into the precipitable water vapor (PWV) through a function relation, and further has been widely used in meteorology, especially in improving the precision of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. However, such geomagnetic effects on the atmosphere are ignored in GPS meteorology applications. In this paper, we will investigate the geomagnetic storms' effects on the middle atmosphere and troposphere (0-100km) by GPS observations and other data. It has found that geomagnetic storms' effect on the atmosphere also appears in the troposphere, but the mechanism to interpret correlations in the troposphere need be further studied.
