  • Delayed stem senescence of soybean is a phenomenon of retarded leaf and stem yellowing, where plants maintain a high stem water content and remain chlorophyll in leaf and stem at maturity stage. This phenomenon was one of the most important physiological disease in Japanese soybean cultivation. The occurrence of delayed stem senescence was affected by sowing time. And the most of Japanese field, soybean seeds were sowed in June. June is the rainy season in Japan, and the soil water content of field become higher in this season. In this study, the effects of late sowing (July sowing) on the yield and the occurrence of delayed stem senescence in soybean cultivars Enrei, Tachinagaha and Ayakogane were examined from 2013 to 2015, in the experimental farm at Nihon University (Fujisawa-city, Kanagawa, Japan). The seeds of all cultivars were sowed in June (June-normal density plot) or July (July-normal density plot, July-high density plot and July-super high density plot) in field experiment. The pot experiments were carried out in 2014. In all cultivars, the yield of July-high density plot and July-super high density were higher than that of June normal density plot. And the yield of June-normal density plot was the same as that of July-normal density plot. In all cultivars, the occurrence of delayed stem senescence was increased by seeding in June sowing. And in July sowing plots, no significance difference in the occurrence of delayed stem senescence was observed among density plots. One of reason about the increasing the occurrence of delayed stem senescence in June-normal plot was the increasing of the damaged seeds by bean bugs. Add one of reason about the decreasing of the occurrence of delayed stem senescence of July plots was the decreasing of the amount of cytokinin supplied from root to top and water stress after the flowering time was improved compared with the June plot. In conclusion, the yield of Enrei, Tachinagaha and Ayakogane were not changed by changing the sowing time from June to July. In all cultivars, the occurrence of delayed stem senescence were decreasing by seeding in July.

  • In organic agriculture, cover crops are used for weed control. Cover crops inhibited weed germination or growth by allelopathy or shading effects. In this study, we used rye as cover crop to control weed in organic soybean field. The main treatment was rye using method such as living mulch, incorporating and mowing. Sub-treatment was rye planting density and soybean planting density. One month after soybean sowing, weed emergency and growth had been highly suppressed by rye in all treatments. Living mulch treatment was the best effective way to control the weed about 92%, and mowing treatment was the second about 75% compare to control. The weed control efficiency between rye planting densities was similar during one month. Soybean planting density treatment was same result as rye planting density. As a result of this experiment, we recommend rye as living mulch in one row planting.

  • Field studies were conducted in the southeastern Korea ($36^{\circ}$N) on a commerce silt loam soil at paddy field. Seed were manually planted on 16 July 2003. Plants were planted with plant densities of 70${\times}$10 cm (row width x plant spacing), 50 x 10 cm, and 30 ${\times}$10 cm. Two seedlings per hill were taken prior to V3 stage. Fertilizer was applied prior to plant at a rate of 30-30-34 kg (N-$\textrm{P}_2\textrm{O}_5$-$\textrm{K}_2\textrm{O}$) per ha. Experimental design was a randomized complete block in a split plot arrangement with three replications. Yield from different planting densities responded similarly in three soybean cultivars and increased when planting density increased. Somyeongkong showed the highest increasing rate of yield about 26% by 338 g $\textrm{m}^{-2}$ at 30 x l0 cm compared to yield of conventional planting density (70 x 10 cm). Also, the planting density significantly affected pod and seed number and seed weight, but not seed per pod. The tallest plant appeared at 30${\times}$10 cm. The change of leaf area according to days after emergence showed differently in soybean cultivars. The highest and lowest total dry matter production per square meter appeared at 30 x 10 cm and at 70 x 10 cm, respectively. Crop growth rate (CGR) showed greater at R3∼R4 stages compared with V7∼R2 or R2∼R3 growth stages and showed the greatest at 30 x 10 cm in three soybean cultivars. As late planted soybean, there was a significant relation between seed yield and CGR, and leaf area index (LAI) according to planting densities at before and after the flowering stage. Relationship between seed yield and CGR in three planting densities showed a highly significant positive relation ($\textrm{R}^2$=0.757) at R3 to R4 stages, and significant relations ($\textrm{R}^2$=0.505, 0.617) at V7 to R2 and V2 to V3. Also, there was a highly significant positive difference between seed yield and LAI during R3 to R4 and R2 to R3 stages.

  • A set of equations of a water transport model of the soil-plant system was described as an electrical circuit using the Ohm's analogy assuming that the transpirational pull be the main source of the driving force and the resistance be proportional to the inverse of the hydraulic conductivity of the catenary. The effective root resistance ($\hat{R}_{\tau}$) and the effective soil water potential ($\hat{\psi}_s$)were defined with the solution of the system; $$\hat{\psi}_s-\hat{R}_{\tau}g_{\tau}={\psi}_0$$ and the validity of the solution of the equation was demonstrated with the data obtained from a soybean field. ${\psi}_s$ and $R_{\tau}$ explained more reasonably than the average values taken so far. Therefore, the solution will describe the soil water status and the root resistance in terms of water transport in the soil-plant system.

  • Symbiotic effectiveness and significance of Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains in five serogroups which were consisted of three corresponding serotype strains, respectively, indigenous to Korean soils were evaluated in terms of utility of strain serogroup for symbiotic improvement on soybean plant. The nodulation by rhizobia of each serogroup on four soybean cultivars(Danweonkong, Kwangkyo, Pangsakong, and Eunhakong) was good in order of USDA 123 > YCK 150 > YCK 117 > YCK 141 > USDA 110 serogroup members. Shoot dry weight of soybean was relatively high with USDA 110 serogroup members as well as with YCK 141 serogroup members, whereas the effectiveness of USDA 123 serogroup members was the lowest among the serogroups examined. In particular, Pangsakong among soybeans inoculated with five-serogroup members was positively outstanding on nodulation and shoot dry weight of the plant. Overall, symbiotic parameters of serogroup members associated with soybean plant such as nodule number, nodule mass, $N_2$ase activity, and shoot dry weight showed significantly different responses at level of 1% probability among both rhizobial serogroups and soybean cultivars, respectively. The rate in symbiotic similarity of the members of each serogroup from F-test ($$P{\leq_-}0.05$$) was 100% for nodule No., 90% for $N_2$ase activity. and 80% for soybean shoot dry weight. Taken together, the results indicated that the serological grouping of B. japonicum could be strongly useful for improving the symbiotic effectiveness hetween soybean and Rhizobium.

  • Effects of nitrogen sources on free amino acids, and on photosynthsis-respiration equilibrium point of various positional leaf in soybean were investigated in relation to phosphorus sensitivity. The content of free amino acids was highest in ammonium and lowest in urea treated leaves. Glycine, serine, alanine and especially histidine were high in the ammonium treated leaves. Aspartic acid was high in the nitrate treated leaves. Photosynthesis respiration equilibrium point was higher in the sensitive cultivars, and higher with ammonium than with nitrate. The excess ammonium in plant appears to draw out an intermediate metabolite from carbon fixation pathway resulting in photosynthetic inhibition and activate pentoses phosphate pathway and photorespiration. Such phenomena were likely accentuated in phosphorus sensitive variety.

  • Fatty acid and sterol composition of soybean seedlings was investigated by treatment of light irradiation time. The results obtained were as follows; 1. In hypocotyl of seedlings, the proportion of linoleic and linolenic acid was in creased with increasing light irradiation time, while those of palmitic and stearic acid was decreased. 2. In root of seedlings, the proportion of palmitic and linolenic acid was decreased with increasing light irradiation time, but those of stearic and oleic acid was in creased 2 days after germination. 3. Throughout their growth, the main sterol of cotyledon was the stigmasterol but that of in hypocotyl and roots was sitosterol. 4. On 6 days after planting, the content of sitosterol was the highest in hypocotyl of seedlings recieved 24-hour irradiation. 5. The proportion of sitosterol in root was decreased with growth duration under the dark and 24 hour-irradiation condition while increased under 16 hour irradiation.

  • Several experiments were conducted to classify the variablity of field emergence rate among the major soybean(Glycine max. (L) Merril) cultivars. The results obtained are summerized as follows. The speed of emergence is highly correlated with diameter of hypocotyl. As increasing the seed depth, emergence percentage of small seed is higher than that of large seed, and emergence of large seed at seeding depth 5cm is higher than that of small seed, at seeding depth 7cm. Emergence percentage in clay, clay : sand :(1 : 1), sand : vermiculite(1 : 1), clay : (1 : 1), sand, vermiculite are 65, 80, 84, 89, 90 and 91%, respectively. As the soil water potential was decreasing from-0.1 to-0.5 bar, emergence percentage is increasing. The highest emergence percentage was shown at -0.5 bar, and the lowest emergence percentage at -0.7 bar.

  • The six soybean cultivars (Lee, Hill, Harosoy, Clark-63 Chippewa and R56-49) different in phosphorus sensitivity were cultured with $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$ or urea-N under water culture condition. Free sugars and organic chrematogram. Three peaks (unknown x, y and sucrose) were appeared as considerable main peaks. The X compound appeared as trace in the nitrate fed plant while unexpectedly high in ammonium or urea fed plant. The Y compound tend to decrase in urea fed plant. Sucrose was trace in ammonium fed plant but it was greater in urea onethan in nitrate one. The X was assumed a four carbon sugar acid derived from erythrose or a ring compound derived from purine or pyrimidine. While Y was assumed a hexose derived from glycolysis path. Since Y/x ratio is a good index of phosphorus sensitivity (inve rserelation) these compounds appears keycompounds to elucidate phosphorus sensitivity and ammonium toxicity.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of sulfur containing fertilizers on growth, yield and nutritive quality of soybean as affected by lime application at reclaimed soil. Lime application for neutralization requirements showed the effect of increased grain yield about 32% compared to the non application at newly opened land of red and yellow soil. In case of lime application, the sulfur containing fertilizers combined with super phosphate, ammonium sulfate, and gypsum increased the grain yield by 31%, 11%, and 3%, respectively. When lime was not applied, magnesium carbonate application increased the yield by 47%, super phosphate by 22%, and gypsum by 15%. The protein content of grain was higher at lime application than those of non lime application and was increased by the application of sulfur containing fertilizer. But lipid content was not affected by lime or sulfur application. From the above results obtained it was concluded that sulfur fertilizer effect under lime application was significant when combined with super phosphate or ammonium sulfate application. Magnesium carbonate or super phosphate application was the best combination with sulfur-containing fertilizer.
