Transition jitter noise is one of major sources of detection errors in high density recording channels. Implementation complexity of the optimal detector for such channels is high due to the data dependency and correlated nature of the jitter noise. In this paper, two types of hardware efficient sub-optimal detectors are derived by modifying branch metric of Viterbi algorithm and applied to partial response (PR) channels combined with run length limited modulation coding. The additional complexity over the conventional Viterbi algorithm to incorporate the modified branch metric is either a multiplication or an addition for each branch metric in the Viterbi trellis.

Noise of digital camera has been noticeable to its users. Particularly, noise of a barrel assembly module in zoom in/zoom out operation is recorded while taking a video. Reduction of barrel noise becomes crucial but there are not many studies on noise of digital camera due to its short history of use. In this study, experiment-based analyses are implemented to identify sources of noise and vibration because of complexity and compactness of the barrel system. Output noise is acquired in various operation conditions using synchronization for spectral analysis. Noise sources of a barrel assembly in zoom operating are first identified by the comparison with gear frequency analysis and then correlation analysis between noise and vibration is applied to confirm the generation path of noise. Analysis on noise transfer characteristic of zoom module is also carried out in order to identify the most contributing components. One of possible countermeasures of noise in zoom operating is investigated by an experimental approach.
An algorithm is presented for estimating the 3-D location (i.e., azimuth angle, elevation angle, and range) of multiple sources with a uniform circular array (UCA) consisting of an even number of sensors. Recently the rank reduction (RARE) algorithm for partly-calibrated sensor arrays was developed. This algorithm is applicable to sensor arrays consisting of several identically oriented and calibrated linear subarrays. Assuming that a UCA consists of M sensors, it can be divided into M/2 identical linear subarrays composed of two facing sensors. Based on the structure of the subarrays, the steering vectors are decomposed into two parts: range-independent 2-D direction-of-arrival (DOA) parameters, and range-relevant 3-D location parameters. Using this property we can estimate range-independent 2-D DOAs by using the RARE algorithm. Once the 2-D DOAs are available, range estimation can be obtained for each source by defining the 1-D MUSIC spectrum. Despite its low computational complexity, the proposed algorithm can provide an estimation performance almost comparable to that of the 3-D MUSIC benchmark estimator.

The concentrations of aldehydes were measured in downtown area of Buchun and Kwanghwamoon of Seoul from October 1997 to August 1998 using 2-series impingers. The data have been analysed to identify the seasonal pattern of aldehyde sources in metropolitan areas. The measured concentration (in ppbv) of aldehydes were 8.86 $\pm$ 7.28 HCHO (formaldehyde) and 7.79$\pm$7.29 $CH_3$CHO (acetaldehyde) in Buchun, while recording 10.13$\pm$8.58 (HCHO) and 7.64$\pm$6.65 ($CH_3$CHO) in Kwanghwamoon. Their diurnal variation patterns showed significant increase of HCHO and $CH_3$CHO concentration in early afternoon, indicating an increase in secondary sources. Their concentrations however decreased in the nighttime, regardless of seasons. The strength of correlations between certain pairs such as (1) HCHO and CO and (2) $CH_3$CHO and CO were generally high during the winter months (0.64< r < 0.84), suggesting the possibility of similar source processes for HCHO, $CH_3$CHO and CO. On the other hand during the summer months, their correlations are frequently lower than winter months. We suggested that the complexity of source/sink processes during the summer period may reduce the correlations between aldehyde and CO.
This paper deals with an application of adaptive blind source separation (BSS) method, equivariant adaptive separation via independence (EASI), and Teager Energy Operator (TEO) for online identification of structural modal parameters. The aim of adaptive BSS methods is recovering a set of independent sources from their unknown linear mixtures in each step when a new sample is received. In the proposed approach, firstly, the EASI method is used to decompose structural responses into independent sources at each instance. Secondly, the TEO based demodulation method with discrete energy separation algorithm (DESA-1) is applied to each independent source, and the instantaneous frequencies and damping ratios are extracted. The DESA-1 method can provide the fast time response and has high resolution so it is suitable for online problems. This paper also compares the performance of DESA-1 algorithm with Hilbert transform (HT) method. Compared to HT method, the DESA-1 method requires smaller amounts of samples to estimate and has a smaller computational complexity and faster adaption due to instantaneous characteristic. Furthermore, due to high resolution of the DESA-1 algorithm, it is very sensitive to noise and outliers. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been validated using synthetic examples and a benchmark structure.
Humanity is experiencing a very fast-paced technological evolution. As technological systems evolve exponentially, societies are becoming more global and are starting to have impacts beyond their geographic demarcations. This implies that, the actions of a person who is across the ocean from where we live could have significant impacts on our everyday lives. This article explores the complexity of globalization, identifies a number of global issues, and looks at the University and the Science and Technology Parks as potential sources of human capital to tackle current and forthcoming global challenges, ranging from new energy sources to potable water distributions. The article focuses on current efforts that are taking place across universities and science and technology parks around the world. We propose a new methodology whereby interdisciplinary work can inform the development of multidisciplinary approaches to solve some of the most complex global issues such as cyber security and educating the next generations of global leaders, providing them them with the necessary skills to be successful in a globally distributed workforce.

Recently, the electric vehicles which are powered by such sources as battery, solar cell, fuel-cell, and so forth attract increasing attention. However, the unit cell voltages of these power sources are so low that a number of cells should be stacked in series to drive the vehicle inverter systems, which increases the complexity of the structure of power source. In this paper, a high-efficiency high-power boost converter for electric vehicle applications, which is able to convert a relatively low source voltage into a sufficiently high regulated DC link voltage, is proposed, and the design guidelines and the experimental results are presented.
The HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran) model was applied to Mangyeong river watershed to examine its applicability through calibration using monitoring data. For the model application, digital maps were constructed for watershed boundary, land-use, Digital Elevation Model of Mangyeong river watershed using BASINS (Better Assessment Science for Intergrating point and Nonpoint Sources) program. The observed runoff was 1976.4mm while the simulated runoff was 1913.4mm from 2007 to 2008. The model results showed that the simulated runoff was in a good agreement with the observed data and indicated reasonable applicability of the model. In terms of water quality, trends of the observed value were in a good agreement with simulated value despite its model performance lower than expected. However, its reliability and performance were with the expectation considering complexity of the watershed, pollutant sources and land use intermixed in the watershed. Overall, we identified application of HSPF model as reliable evidence by model performance.
The present study examined the effects of the complexity of the 3D models on the results of acoustic simulation which is the predominant tool of the acoustical design of buildings. Also, the effects of the 3D model on the auralized sounds were investigated. In order to carry out the study, four 3D models with different levels of complexity were introduced for a real auditorium which have different numbers of surfaces in the persuit of the guidance of odeon room acoustic software. The set-up of models was also based on the level of transition order of the program. And the acoustic experiments were performed measuring room acoustic parameters including SPL, RT, C80, D50. Acoustic computer simulations were performed using four different models. Then, the results of the computer modeling were compared with the measured acoustical parameters. In addition, sound sources were recorded in the field and auralized sounds were made in convolution with the impulse source made from acoustic modeling. Then, subjective tests were undertaken using auralized sounds. As the results, it was found that the result of the acoustic simulation were closer to the real room acoustic properties when 3D model was more particularly made. For the subjective test, the listening materials were acknowledged as similar with the real sound source when more complex 3D model was used. Then, it could be concluded that the complexity of the 3D model affects the results of the acoustic modeling as well as subjective tests.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of diet complexity and fermented soy protein on growth performance and amino acid digestibility. In Exp. 1, a total of 120 crossbred weanling pigs ($5.68{\pm}0.80\;kg$ BW) were randomly allocated into 4 treatments. Each treatment had 6 replicate pens comprising 5 pigs in each replicate. Experimental diets consisted of simple (soybean meal as protein source) and complex (soybean meal, rice protein concentrate, potato protein concentrate and fish meal as protein sources) diets; each diet contained 0 or 5% fermented soy protein (FSP), respectively. Dietary treatments included: i) simple diet; ii) simple diet with 5% FSP; iii) complex diet; iv) complex diet with 5% FSP. Pigs were provided each experimental diet for 20 d (phase 1) and then fed the same common diet for 10 d (phase 2). During days 0-10, pigs fed FSP diets had greater ADG than those fed non-FSP diets (p<0.05). G/F in FSP treatments was significantly higher than that in non-FSP treatments (p<0.05) from days 0 to 10. Throughout the overall period, G/F was greater in FSP treatments compared with non-FSP treatments (p<0.05). On d 10, N digestibility was higher in pigs fed FSP diets than in those fed non-FSP diets (p<0.05). Diet complexity did not affect growth performance and nutrient digestibility (p>0.05) in this experiment. In Exp 2, 12 ileal-cannulated, weanling barrows were housed in individual metabolism crates and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments (same as Exp. 1) by using a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. Among the essential amino acids, apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of Met and Val were increased in pigs fed FSP diets compared with those fed non-FSP diets (p<0.05). AID of Met, Phe and total essential amino acids were higher in pigs fed complex diets than in those fed simple diets (p<0.05). Among the non-essential amino acids, AID of Ala in FSP treatments was greater than that in non-FSP treatments (p<0.05). In addition, Asp, Cys, Glu, Pro, Ser and total non-essential amino acid digestibilities in pigs fed complex diets were higher compared with those fed simple diets (p<0.05). Interaction was observed in AID of Met, Asp and Pro. In conclusion, these results indicated that feeding of 5% FSP to nursery pigs improved feed efficiency and AID of amino acids, and diet complexity did not maximize the growth performance of pigs in the subsequent phase.
