  • VR (Virtual Reality) contents make the audience perceive virtual space as real through the virtual Z axis which creates a space that could not be created in 2D due to the space between the eyes of the audience. This visual change has led to the need for technological changes to sound and sound sources inserted into VR contents. However, studies to increase immersion in VR contents are still more focused on scientific and visual fields. This is because composing and producing VR sounds require professional views in two areas: sound-based engineering and computer-based interactive sound engineering. Sound-based engineering is difficult to reflect changes in user interaction or time and space by directing the sound effects, script sound, and background music according to the storyboard organized by the director. However, it has the advantage of producing the sound effects, script sound, and background music in one track and not having to go through the coding phase. Computer-based interactive sound engineering, on the other hand, is produced in different files, including the sound effects, script sound, and background music. It can increase immersion by reflecting user interaction or time and space, but it can also suffer from noise cancelling and sound collisions. Therefore in this study, the following methods were devised and utilized to produce sound for VR contents called "A Midsummer Night" so as to take advantage of each sound-making technology. First, the storyboard is analyzed according to the user's interaction. It is to analyze sound effects, script sound, and background music which is required according to user interaction. Second, the sounds are classified and analyzed as 'simultaneous sound' and 'individual sound'. Thirdly, work on interaction coding for sound effects, script sound, and background music that were produced from the simultaneous sound and individual time sound categories is done. Then, the contents are completed by applying the sound to the video. By going through the process, sound quality inhibitors such as noise cancelling can be removed while allowing sound production that fits to user interaction and time and space.

  • In this paper, the sound source localization system in real time which uses the time delay of arrival signal is proposed. This system uses minimum microphones and surveillance camera for estimation of the sound source localization and sound direction. To apply this system to the military field, four models(model1~model4) are derived. Model 1 can be used to evaluate the sound source localization at the long distance. Model2 and model3 can be applied to estimate the sound direction. Model4 is useful for the special purpose and potable device. It is possible for this system to be used for the military guard and surveillance. As a result of experiments, It is shown that this system can estimate the sound source localization and the sound direction using minimum microphones.

  • The 1st assessment(performance test) was applied to assure the floor impact sound performance for developing the dry double-floor with the change of rubber hardness of the upper panel's support and the ceiling structure of the sub-floor. Depends on the change of the rubber hardness in sub-structure, the heavy-weight sound impact value is improved up to 3 dB, and the light-weight sound impact value is moved up to 21 dB, comparing with the bare-slab. Also, the improved value for the floor impact sound conjugating with the sub-floor's ceiling was 5 dB. Based on this result, the 2nd assessment(performance test) was made the state that the rubber hardness of the sub-floor support was ranged between 50 and 70 for considering the stability of walking patients. In addition to this process, the assessment was carried out with a variety of ceiling structure applied to the dry double-floor structure with the air flow system on the sub-floor's ceiling. The result for the 2nd assessment proved that TYPEII-3 had the better sound reduction performance in the heavy-weight impact sound test than other types, and also for the light-weight impact sound TYPEII-3 had the 29 dB sound reduction performance overall. Henceforth, based on the result the research for the sound reduction performance from the floor impact sound shall be ongoing process as well as the development of a double-dry floor and a sound reduction ceiling to suitable on the field.

  • Panning is the way in which to realize a spatial sound in MIDI by moving sound images by the loudness of each channel. However, there is a limitation for the natural spatial sound. The HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) has been widely known as one of the ways to realize spatial sound using the two channels, but it needs much processing power. It is very hard to implement a real time processing structure. In this paper, we propose an improved 3D sound model for the spatial sound location by changing the acoustic parameters. We could get a good result from the experiment with MIDI Pan and our Model.

  • Sound absorbing materials are being developed in various materials and shapes and they are being applied in many fields such as construction, transportation, civil engineering, and sound. Among many sound-absorbing materials, polyester fiber has no environmental problems and harmfulness, and is a material with good sound absorption properties while being inexpensive. So it is manufactured as a nonwoven sound-absorbing material and used in various fields. In this study, polyester dry-laid nonwoven with different basis weight were manufactured using three types of polyester staple fibers: regular solid, single-hole hollow, and low linear density. We focused on the effects of the properties of the fibers, which constitute nonwovens, on the sound absorption properties, and we considered the basis weight. As the basis weight of the nonwoven fabric increased, the pore size became smaller and the air permeability was lowered, but the sound absorption coefficient was higher. However, the single-hole hollow polyester fiber did not contribute to the increase of the sound absorption coefficient of the nonwoven. It was established that, lower fiber fineness caused the sound absorption coefficient of the nonwoven to be increased. It was also found that the increase in the sound absorption coefficient due to the application of low fineness appeared from a certain basis weight or more.

  • This study aims to investigate the sound absorption ability of Acanthopanax senticosus wastes as an eco-friendly sound-absorbing material. The sound absorption coefficient was examined with different heights of A. senticosus wastes filling (40, 60, 80, and 100 mm) in impedance tubes. The sound absorption peaks shifted to a lower frequency as the height of A. senticosus wastes inside the tubes increased. The sound absorption ability at filling heights of 80 and 100 mm was obtained as 0.3M and 0.5M grades, respectively, based on KS F 3503. The results suggest that A. senticosus wastes exhibit good sound absorption ability and can therefore be used as an efficient, eco-friendly sound-absorbing material.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a sound absorbing material for indoor which manufactured by a clay and binding material. The seven kind of sound absorbing specimens which sintered through a mold process at high temperature were manufactured for the purpose of testing sound absorption performance. The random and normal sound absorption coefficients were measured for the sintered clay sound absorbing specimens with different particle size, density and mixture ratio. From the experimental results, it was found that its particle size was closely related to the sound absorption performance. It was shown that the sintered clay sound absorbing specimen had the sound absorption properties of a fiber-type or a resonance-type sound absorbing material depending on the particle size.

  • This study investigated the prospect of using peanut shells as an alternative and green sound-absorbing material. The sound-absorption coefficients were determined after filling impedance tubes of 30, 60, and 90 mm in height with peanut shells. The sound-absorption ability increased as the filling height increased, showing noise reduction coefficient (NRCs) of 0.23, 0.43, and 0.54 for the 30-, 60-, and 90-mm heights, respectively. In addition, for sounds greater than 2,000 Hz, the average sound-absorption coefficient of peanut shells in the 60- and 90-mm heights was 0.9. In summary, peanut shells were found to have good sound-absorption properties comparable to or better than those of bamboo, sisal, jute, and wool, and this research suggests that peanut shells may be useful as an environmentally friendly sound-absorbing material.
