  • Employing an after-treatment system has almost become a mandatory requirement for Diesel vehicles, which results from a reinforced exhaust regulations as the number of vehicles powered by a Diesel engine increases. The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system is considered as one of the most efficient method to reduce particulate matter (PM); however, the improvement of a regeneration performance at any engine operation point presents a considerable challenge by itself. Temperature, gas composition and flow rate of exhaust gas are important parameters in DPF evaluation processes, especially during a regeneration process. Engine dynamometer and segment tester are generally used in DPF evaluation so far. These test methods, however, could not completely evaluate the effect of various parameters on real DPF, such as oxygen concentration, amount of soot and exhaust gas temperatures. The evaluation of DPF systems using a dump combustor has been verified experimentally and this dump combustor system is likely to be appropriate for the DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) assessments test, too.

  • Computer methods with simplified mathematical models in conjunction with empirical model parameters can be efficiently practiced into an optimization of a diesel aftertreatment system. Components of prime interests are diesel particulate filter, diesel oxidation catalyst and de-$NO_x$ catalytic converter. de-$NO_x$, de-PM, and de-HC processes in each part are individually modeled, formulated and then combined into an integrated analysis procedure for a unified simulation of the diesel emission aftertreatment. The model is empirically tuned and validated with comprehensive engine and laboratory data. The effects of emission species and space velocity on the $NO_x$ and soot reductions are parametrically investigated. A lowered $NO_2/NO_x$ ratio due to PM oxidation in DPF contributes to promote the $NO_x$ reduction by SCR at intermediate gas temperatures. $NO_x$ reduction is inert to the PM oxidation at high temperatures. Rate of PM trapping strongly depends on temperature and $NO_x$ concentration.

소형 어선용 디젤기관의 운전조건과 부탄올 혼합유의 배기 배출물 특성에 관한 연구 (A study on exhaust emission characteristics according to operating conditions and butanol blended fuels in a small diesel engine for fishing vessel)

  • In this study, blending oils of diesel oil and butanol were used as fuel oil for diesel engine to measure combustion pressure, fuel consumption, air ratio and exhaust gas emission due to various operating conditions such as engine revolution and torque. Using these data, the results of analyzing the engine performance, combustion characteristics and exhaust emission characteristics such as NOx (nitrogen oxides), CO2 (carbon dioxide), CO (carbon monoxide) and soot were as follows. The fuel conversion efficiency at each load was highest when driven in the engine revolution determined by a fixed pitch propeller law. Except 30% butanol blending oil, fuel conversion efficiency of the other fuel oils increased as the load increased. Compared to diesel oil, using 10% and 20% butanol blending oil as fuel oil was advantageous in terms of thermal efficiency, but it did not have a significant impact on the reduction of exhaust gas emissions. On the other hand, future research is needed on the results of the 20% butanol blending oil showing lower or similar levels of smoke concentration and carbon monoxide emission rate other than those types of diesel oil.

Ultrafine Particle Events in the Ambient Atmosphere in Korea

  • In this study, real time measurements of particle number size distribution in urban Gwangju, coastal Taean, and industrial Yeosu in Korea were conducted in 2008 to understand the occurrence of ultrafine particle (UFP) (<100 nm) events, the variation of its concentration among different sampling sites, and UFP formation pathways. Also, to investigate seasonal and long-term variation of the UFP number concentration, data were collected for the period of 5 years (2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012) in urban Gwangju. Photochemical and combustion events were found to be responsible for the formation of UFP in the urban Gwangju site, whereas only photochemical event led to the formation of UFP in the coastal Taean site. The highest UFP concentration was found in industrial Yeosu (the average UFP number fractions were 79, 59 and 58% in Yeosu, Gwangju, and Taean, respectively), suggesting that high amount of gas pollutants (e.g., $NO_2$, $SO_2$, and volatile organic carbon (VOC)) emitted from industries and their photochemical reaction contributed for the elevated UFP concentration in the industrial Yeosu site. The UFP fraction also showed a seasonal variation with the peak value in spring (61.5, 54.5, 50.5, and 40.7% in spring, fall, summer, and winter, respectively) at urban Gwangju. Annual average UFP number concentrations in urban Gwangju were $5.53{\times}10^3\;cm^{-3}$, $4.68{\times}10^3\;cm^{-3}$, $5.32{\times}10^3\;cm^{-3}$, $3.99{\times}10^3\;cm^{-3}$, and $2.16{\times}10^3\;cm^{-3}$ in the year 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012, respectively. Comparison of the annual average UFP number concentration with urban sites in other countries showed that the UFP concentrations of the Korean sites were lower than those in other urban cities, probably due to lower source strength in the current site. TEM/EDS analysis for the size-selected UFPs showed that the UFPs were classified into various types having different chemical species. Carbonaceous particles were observed in both combustion (soot and organics) and photochemical events (sulfate and organics). In the photochemical event, an internal mixture of organic species and ammonium sulfate/bisulfate was identified. Also, internal mixtures of aged Na-rich and organic species, aged Ca-rich particles, and doughnut shaped K-containing particles with elemental composition of a strong C with minor O, S, and K-likely to be originated from biomass burning nearby agricultural area, were observed. In addition, fly ash particles were also observed in the combustion event, not in the photochemical event.

층류제트 부상화염에서 열손실에 의한 자기진동에 관한 연구 (Study on Heat-Loss-Induced Self-Excitation in Laminar Lifted Jet Flames)

  • 질소 희석된 프로판 부상화염에서 열손실에 의한 자기진동을 기초로 화염안정화선도를 도출하기 위하여 노즐직경 0.3 mm, 1.0 mm에서 실험적 연구를 수행하였다. 예혼합화염에서 확산화염으로의 전도 열손실에 의한 자기진동 및 매연 복사에 의한 자기진동을 관찰하였다. 0.1 Hz보다 낮은 주파수 성향을 띄는 열손실에 의한 자기진동은 제안된 메커니즘에 의해 잘 묘사되었고 반면 매연복사에 의한 자기진동은 O(0.1 Hz)의 주파수 범위를 나타내었으며 제안된 메커니즘은 항온항습실 실험을 통해 입증하였다. 질소 희석된 프로판 부상화염에서 관찰된 열손실에 의한 자기진동의 특성화는 관련된 변수 및 스트라훌 수에 의해 잘 묘사되었다.

디젤 저온연소 운전 영역에서 흡기압이 엔진 성능에 주는 영향 (Effect of Intake Pressure on Emissions and Performance in Low Temperature Combustion Operation of a Diesel Engine)

  • One of the effective ways to reduce both $NO_x$ and PM at the same time in a diesel CI engine is to operate the engine in low temperature combustion (LTC) regimes. In general, two strategies are used to realize the LTC operation-dilution controlled LTC and late injection LTC - and in this study, the former approach was used. In the dilution controlled regime, LTC is achieved by supplying a large amount of EGR to the cylinder. The significant EGR gas increases the heat capacity of in-cylinder charge mixture while decreasing oxygen concentration of the charge, activating low temperature oxidation reaction and lowering PM and $NO_x$ emissions. However, use of high EGR levels also deteriorates combustion efficiency and engine power output. Therefore, it is widely considered to use increased intake pressure as a way to resolve this issue. In this study, the effects of intake pressure variations on performance and emission characteristics of a single cylinder diesel engine operated in LTC regimes were examined. LTC operation was achieved in less than 8% $O_2$ concentration and thus a simultaneous reduction of both PM and $NO_x$ emission was confirmed. As intake pressure increased, combustion efficiency was improved so that THC and CO emissions were decreased. A shift of the peak Soot location was also observed to lower $O_2$ concentration while $NO_x$ levels were kept nearly zero. In addition, an elevation of intake pressure enhanced engine power output as well as indicated thermal efficiency in LTC regimes. All these results suggested that LTC operation range can be extended and emissions can be further reduced by adjusting intake pressure.

디젤의 청정연소를 위한 저온 플라즈마 연료개질 및 개질가스의 디젤엔진 첨가에 관한 연구 (Nonthermal Plasma-assisted Diesel Reforming and Injection of the Reformed Gas into a Diesel Engine for Clean Combustion)

  • 저온 플라즈마 연료개질 장치를 개발하여 여러 운전인자가 그 성능에 미치는 영향을 조사하였고 생성된 수소농후 개질가스를 무부하(Idle) 상태의 디젤엔진에 연소용 공기와 같이 주입하여 NO와 매연 저감효율에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다 전력 소모량이 증가할수록 개질반응의 점화가 더욱 용이하였으나 $H_2$ 농도, $H_2$ 수율, 에너지 전환율과 같은 저온 플라즈마 연료개질 장치의 성능은 O/C 비에 의해서만 영향을 받았는데 그 이유는 평형 반응온도가 O/C 비에 의하여 결정되기 때문이다. 저온 플라즈마 연료개질 장치에서의 $H_2$ 수율과 에너지 전환율은 O/C 비가 증가함에 따라 O/C 비가 $1.2{\sim}1.5$에서 33.4%와 66%의 최고값을 통과하였다. $H_2$ 수율과 에너지 전환율이 O/C 비가 $1.2{\sim}1.5$ 이하인 범위에서 O/C 비가 증가함에 따라 증가하는 이유는 O/C 비가 높아짐에 따라 완전 산화반응이 충분히 일어나서 반응온도가 높아지기 때문으로 보인다. O/C비가 $1.2{\sim}1.5$ 이상인 범위에서 O/C 비가 증가함에 따라 $H_2$ 수율과 에너지 전환율이 감소하는 현상은 과잉산소 조건에서 완전산화반응이 더욱 촉진되어 $H_2$ 수율과 에너지 전환율이 감소하였기 때문으로 보인다. 무부하 상태의 디젤엔진에 개질가스를 주입시 개질된 디젤/총디젤 무게비가 $18.2{\sim}23.5%$까지 증가할 때 NO저감효율과 매연제거효율은 각각 68.8%와 55.5%까지 증가하였다.

FHD법에 의한 $B_2O_3-P_2O_5-SiO_2$ 실리카막의 효과적인 $P_2O_5$ 도핑 (The Effective $P_2O_5$ Doping into $B_2O_3-P_2O_5-SiO_2$ Silica Layer Fabrication by Flame Hydrolysis Deposition)

  • 광집적회로용 평면도파로를 구현하기 위한 $B_2O_3-P_2O_5-SiO_2$ 실리카 광도파막을 실리콘 기판위에 FDH(Flame Hydrolysis Depositon)법으로 제조하여 미립자의 미세구조, 실리카막의 굴절률과 조성을 고찰하였다. FHD법에서 도펀트(dopant)물질로, $B_1\;P_1\;Ge$ 등의 산화물이 사용되며, $B_1$ Ge 산화물의 경우 $SiO_2$와의 결합특성이 우수하여 비교적 도핑(doping)이 용이하지만 P의 경우 $P_2O_5$의 낮은 융점에 의한 증발 등으로 효과적인 도핑이 어렵다. 수직형 FHD 토치를 사용하고 화염온도, 기판온도, 토치와 기판간의 거리를 최적화하여 P 농도가 3.3 Wt%이상이고 고밀화 온도가 $1180^{\circ}C$ 이하인 양질의 실리카막을 얻었다. 실리카막의 굴절률은 $1.55\;\mu\textrm{m}$ 파장에서 $1.4480{\pm}1{\times}10^{-1}$로 측정되었으며, $22{\pm}1\;\mu\textrm{m}$의 두께를 보였다.

A Study on Numerical Simulation of Gaseous Flow in SCR Catalytic Filter of Diesel Exhaust Gas Aftertreatment Device

  • A SCR catalytic filter system is used for reducing $NO_x$ and soot emissions simultaneously from diesel combustors. The amount of ammonia (as a reducing agent) must be controlled with the amount of $NO_x$ to obtain an optimal $NO_x$ conversion. Hence, gas mixing between ammonia and exhaust gases is vital to ensure that the SCR catalyst is optimally used. If ammonia mass distribution is not uniform, slip potential will occur in rich concentration areas. At lean areas, on the other hand, the catalyst is not fully active. The better mixing is indicated by the higher uniformity of ammonia mass distribution which is necessary to be considered in SCR catalytic filter system. The ammonia mass distributions are depended on the flow field of fluids. In this study, the velocity field of gaseous flow is investigated to characterize the transport of ammonia in SCR catalytic filter system. The influence of different injection placements on the ammonia mass distribution is also discussed. The results show that the ammonia mass distribution is more uniform for the injector directed radially perpendicular to the main flow of inlet at the gravitational direction than that at the side wall for both laminar (Re = 640) and turbulent flows (Re = 4255). It is also found that the mixing index decreases as increasing the heating temperature in the case of ammonia injected at the side wall.

공동주택 화재 시 부속실 가압 시스템의 방연풍속에 관한 수치해석적 연구 (Numerical Study on Air Egress Velocity of Ancillary Room Pressurization Systems in Apartment Fires)

  • 본 연구에서는 공동주택 화재 시 부속실 가압 시스템의 방연풍속에 관하여 수치해석을 수행하였다. 수치해석을 통해 댐퍼의 급기량과 방화문에서의 방연풍속의 관계식을 선형적으로 나타내었고 국가화재안전기준인 방연풍속 0.7 m/s를 만족하는 댐퍼의 최소유량을 선정할 수 있었다. 댐퍼의 최소유량을 적용하여 댐퍼의 급기 방향과 설치 높이에 따라 방연속도를 분석하였다. 댐퍼의 급기 방향이 상향인 경우와 댐퍼가 높게 설치되었을 때 댐퍼의 급기 방향이 하향인 경우보다 방화문 상부에서 더 큰 방연풍속을 나타내었고 누출된 연기 농도가 더 낮은 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 방화문 상부에서 큰 방연풍속을 확보하는 것이 제연에 더 효율적일 것으로 판단된다.
