  • We report a new route to synthesize high quality zinc blende CdS and ZnS nanocrystals in noncoordinating solvent 1-octadecene, using dodecanethiol (DDT) molecules as both the sulfur source and surface capping ligands. Different reaction temperatures and Cd(Zn)/DDT molar ratios were tested to optimize the synthesis conditions. Absorption photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize assynthesized nanocrystals. The narrow half width at the half-maximum on the long wavelength side of the firstexcitonic absorption peak and TEM images demonstrated nearly monodisperse size distributions of asprepared CdS, ZnS, and CdS/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals. Only trap emissions of the nanocrystals were detected when the amount of DDT was excessive, this came from the strong quenching effect of thiol groups on the nanocrystal surfaces. After overcoating with ZnS shells, band-gap emissions of CdS nanocrystals were partially recovered.

  • Andong Soju is a Korean traditional distilled liquor brewed with Nuruk which is cultured with wild microorganisms. To provide useful information for scientific production and systematic quality control of traditional distilled liquor, the effects of mixed culture of the alcoholic yeasts and saccharifying molds isolated from the Nuruk, and mashes on the flavor and sensory characteristics were investigated. Distillate from mashes cocultured with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Hansenula anomala using Mucor Nuruk was compared with distillate from mashes brewed with Andong Nuruk and with distillate from plant fermented mashes to analyze their flavor characteristics. The volatile flavor compounds in distillates were analyzed by GC and GC-MS using direct injection, solvent extraction, and purge & trap methods. Alcohols such as 3-methyl-1-butanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, 1-propanol, and 2-phenyl ethanol; aldehydes such as acetaldehyde and 2-furancar-boxaldehyde; esters such as ethyl ester of acetic acid, hexanoic acid, octanoic acid, decanoic acid; alkanes, alkenes, ketone, sulfur, and pyrone compounds were detected. Alcohols were chief components of flavor compounds. No significant difference in overall acceptability test was shown among three experimental groups(p<0.05), but Nuruk-like aroma, Kaoliangchiew-like aroma, sweet taste, and well rounded mouthfeel showed significant differences among them(p<0.05).

  • To understand the human exposure levels of volatile halogenated hydrocar-bons in ambient air, a new rapid and convenient analytical method for determination of the compounds in gaseous phase was evaluated and established. The method is based upon passsive diffusion to personal sampler containing adsorbent and solvent extraction followed by purge trap/ on-column cryof-ocusing method. A new method needs no special instrumentation for gas collection because it is based upon the passive diffusion principle. The typical chromatogram obtained in this study proved that rapid and simultaneous determination of target analytes was possible with good resolution. The developed method was successfully applied to determine the volatile halogenated hydrocarbons in indoor air and the values obtained by this new method were compared with those by direct suction method. The concentration of carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,2-trichloroethylene, chloroform showed the values below 400$\mug/m^3$ except the maximum of 1,513$\mug/m^3$ of chloroform. 1,1,1-Trichloroethane showed approximately 1,000 to 5,000$\mug/m^3$ range of diurnal fluctuation in indoor air.

  • Scutellaria radix (SR) has been utilized as a traditional medicine for a variety of diseases including Rheumatoid arthritis and its major flavonoids - baicalein, baicalin, and wogonin - have been reported to exert beneficial health effects, including anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and free-radical scavenging. However, the mechanisms underlying this effect remain poorly understood. The principal objective of this study was to determine the effect of SR on osteoblast and osteoclast cells. SR extract was prepared using 70% ethanol solvent. Osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells and osteoclast precursor Raw 264.7 macrophage cells were utilized. SR extract increased MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation and stimulated alkaline phosphatase activity dose-dependently, 152.0% of the control at concentration $1{\mu}g/mL$. Additionally, SR extract ($1{\mu}g/mL$) stimulated Bone nodule formation activity in MC3T3-E1 cells, approximately 223.3% of the control, 20 days after the exposure. In addition, SR extract significantly reduced the number of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positive (TRAP+) multinucleated cells from Raw 264.7 cells. In conclusion, SR extract stimulates the proliferation and bioactivities of boneforming osteoblasts, and inhibits the activities of bone-resorbing osteoclasts to a certain degree.

  • Acetohydroxyacid synthase (E.C.2.2.1.6., AHAS) is the enzyme that catalyses the first step in the synthesis of the branched-chain amino acids valine, leucine and isoleucine. The AHAS gene (TIGR access code HI2585) from Heamophilus influenzae was cloned into the bacterial expression vector pET-28a and expressed in the Escherichia coli strain BL21(DE3). The expressed enzyme was purified by $Ni^{2+}-charged$ HiTrap chelating HP column. The purified enzyme appears as a single band on SDS-PAGE with a molecular mass of about 63.9 kDa. The enzyme exhibits absolute dependence on the three cofactors FAD, $MgCl_{2}$ and thiamine diphosphate for activity. Specific activity of purified enzyme has 3.22 unit/mg and optimum activity in the pH 7.5 at $37^{\circ}C$. This enzyme activity has an effect on the buffer. When comparing the enzyme activity against the organic solvent, it followed in type and the difference it is but even from the aqueous solution where the organic solvent is included with the fact that the enzyme activity is maintained.

  • Monodisperse, spherical $SiO_2/TiO_2$ composite fine powders were prepared by modified Sol-Gel process which $TiO_2$ fine Powders was used as a seed particles for condensation of TEOS (Tetraethyl Orthosilicate). The reaction was carried out under $N_2$ atmosphere at ambient temperature using $NH_3$ as a catalyst. Ethanol was used as a solvent. Drying process was carried out with vacuum trap which cooled by liquid $N_2$. The reaction variables were the concentration of TEOS, the concentration of ammonia, the size of $TiO_2$ seed and molar ratio of $SiO_2/TiO_2$. The optimum condition for the preparation of $SiO_2/TiO_2$ composite fine powders without agglomeration was [TEOS]=0.3M, [$NH_3$]=0.7M, size of $SiO_2/TiO_2$ seed = 200~300nm.

  • A new kind of organic-inorganic hybrid polymer, poly(tetraphenyl)silole siloxane (PSS), was invented and synthesized for realization of its unique charge trap properties. The organic portions consisting of (tetraphenyl)silole rings are responsible for electron trapping owing to their low-lying LUMO, while the Si-O-Si inorganic linkages of high HOMO-LUMO gap provide the intrachain energy barrier for controlling electron transport. Such an alternation of the organic and inorganic moieties in a polymer may give an interesting quantum well electronic structure in a molecule. The PSS thin film was fabricated by spin-coating of the PSS solution in THF organic solvent onto Si-wafer substrates and curing. The electron trapping of the PSS thin films was confirmed by the capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements performed within the metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) device structure. And the quantum well electronic structure of the PSS thin film, which was thought to be the origin of the electron trapping, was investigated by a combination of theoretical and experimental methods: density functional theory (DFT) calculations in Gaussian03 package and spectroscopic techniques such as near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) and photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The electron trapping properties of the PSS thin film of quantum well structure are closely related to intra- and inter-polymer chain electron transports. Among them, the intra-chain electron transport was theoretically studied using the Atomistix Toolkit (ATK) software based on the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method in conjunction with the DFT.

  • The volatile organic compounds emitted from food wrapping films when it was used at high temperatures. However, the testing method based on solvent extraction may not be suitable for determination of volatile organic compounds from food wrapping films. Therefore, thermal extraction device was investigated in the study for reflection of actual usage conditions at home and restaurant. In this study, PVC food wrapping films were exposed to normal use condition controlled from $50^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$ and collected on sorbent trap. Then, emitted VOCs from the films were analyzed with On-column cryofocusing-GC/MS system. The major VOCs emitted from films were $C_{12}-C_{18}$ paraffinic hydrocarbons, dimethylphthalate, alkylphenols, known as endocrine disrupting chemical, such as tetramethylbutylphenol, tert-butylphenol, and nonylphenol. The concentration of tetramethylbutylphenol emitted from PVC films was $0.07ng/cm^2$ at $50^{\circ}C$, rapidly increased with temperature, $3.94ng/cm^2$ at $100^{\circ}C$.
