The effect of solvent on the dispersion stability of $CaCO_3$ pigment in various solvents and resin solutions has been studied using Dynometer. Dispersion stability can be estimated in a relatively short time by means of Dynometer and the solubility parameter, ${\delta}$, of $CaCO_3$ determined from dispersion stability was 11.62(${\delta}_d=8.04$, ${\delta}_p=5.05$, ${\delta}_h=6.70$). The solvent showing weaker interaction with pigment increased the adsorption of resin on to the pigment, resulting in higher dispersion stability in resin solution. It was found that the rheological properties and dispersion stability of pigmented resin solution were depending strongly on the solvent added in small amount in the formulation.

The solvolysis rate constants of 2,4-dimethoxybenzenesulfonyl chloride (1) in 30 different solvents are well correlated with the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, using the $N_T$ solvent nucleophilicity scale and $Y_{Cl}$ solvent ionizing scale, with sensitivity values of $0.93{\pm}0.14$ and $0.65{\pm}0.06$ for l and m, respectively. These l and m values can be considered to support a $S_N2$ reaction pathway. The activation enthalpies (${\Delta}H^{\neq}$) were 12.4 to $14.6kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ and the activation entropies (${\Delta}S^{\neq}$) were -15.5 to -$32.3kcal{\cdot}mol^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$, which is consistent with the proposed bimolecular reaction mechanism. The solvent kinetic isotope effects (SKIE) were 1.74 to 1.86, which is also in accord with the $S_N2$ mechanism and was possibly assisted using a general-base catalysis. The values of product selectivity (S) for solvolyses of 1 in alcohol/water mixtures was 0.57 to 6.5, which is also consistent with the proposed bimolecular reaction mechanism. Third-order rate constants, $k_{ww}$ and $k_{aa}$, were calculated from the rate constants ($k_{obs}$), together with $k_{aw}$ and $k_{wa}$ calculated from the intercept and slope of the plot of 1/S vs. [water]/[alcohol]. The calculated rate constants, $k_{calc}$ ($k_{ww}$, $k_{aw}$, $k_{wa}$ and $k_{aa}$), are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental values, supporting the stoichiometric solvation effect analysis.

Rate constants of solvolysis of 2-thiophenesulfonyl chloride were determined in aqueous binary mixtures with methanol, ethanol, acetone in water and in methanol. These data are interpreted using the equation of Grunwald-Winstein and Kivinen relationship. Also, kinetic solvent isotope effects in water and in methanol and product selectivities in alcohol-water mixtures were determined. Kinetic solvent isotope effect for hydrolysis of 2-thiopenesulfonyl chloride was 2.24 and 1.47 for methanol and water, respectively. Selectivity values for formation of ester relative to acid in ethanol-water mixtures show maximum S value. From kinetic solvent isotope effect in methanol and water, selectivity data in aqueous alcoholic solvents and solvent effects, it is proposed that the reaction channel favoured in low polarity solvents is general-base catalysis and/or is possibly addition elimination (S$_A$N) reaction pathway and in high polarity solvents iS S$_N$2 reaction mechanism.

Acne vulgaris is often associated with acne-related bacteria such as Cutibacterium acnes. In this study, we investigated the antibacterial effects of the methanol extract of the algae Ecklonia cava and its solvent-soluble extract against C. acnes. Among five solvent fractions, the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity against C. acnes. Furthermore, the EtOAc-soluble extract exhibited the highest total phenolic contents among the five solvent fractions tested. The EtOAc subfraction 07 (Fr. 07) extract showed the highest antibacterial effect against C. acnes and isolated C. acnes along with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging from 32 to 64 ㎍/mL. Additionally, MICs of antibiotics against antibiotic-resistant C. acnes strains were substantially reduced when antibiotics were combined with Fr. 07, suggesting that Fr. 07 restore the antibacterial activity of the antibiotics. The fractional inhibitory concentration indices clearly revealed an additive synergistic effect of Fr. 07 with antibiotics. The results of the present study suggest a potential role for E. cava in the control of infections related to acne vulgaris.
Inkjet technology have many merits in plenty of industrial applications. However, deposited droplet has a very critical issue that is coffee ring effect, for the application to an industrial manufacturing process. To remove the coffee ring effect, the effect of thermal treatment conditions on shapes of inkjet printed silver patterns were investigated in various surface condition. The surface changes were characterized by the contact angle measurement. Droplets from a 50 ${\mu}m$ nozzle were printed on the substrate after optimizing the ejection of individual droplets. Ink with a high boiling point of main solvent results in coffee ring effect. This result implies that the dominant factor that determines the shape of droplet is the drying conditions of main solvent of silver nanoparticle colloidal ink. As a results, selecting a proper thermal treatment conditions is very crucial for better shapes of inkjet printed silver nanoparticle colloidal patterns.
This study was carried out to investigate whether Chrysanthermum zawadskii var. latilobum Kitamura (C. zawadskii) extracts has an inhibitory effect against the mutagenicity by cigarette smoke condensates (CSC). C. zawadskii was extracted with 70% ethanol and the yield was 18.5%. We further fractioned 70% ethanol extract sequentially to diethylether, chloroform, dichloromethane, and aqueous water, and gained the yield of 17.5%, 5.6%, 5.8%, 32.8% and 35.5%, respectively. In the Ames test, there was no mutagenic effect of crude extract and its solvent fractions up to 2 mg/plate toward Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 with or without S-9 mix metabolic activations. On the contrary, the crude extract showed an inhibitory activity against the mutagenicity of CSC in the presence of S-9 mix metabolic activation. Diethyl ether layer among five solvent fractions showed the highest inhibitory activity. The inhibitory activity of diethyl ether fraction was also increased in a dose-dependent manner and the inhibitory rate was about 97.7% at the concentration of 1 mg/plate. In this study, we conclude that crude extract of C. zawadskii itself is potentially safe for mutagenicity, and the diethyl ether fraction has an inhibitory effect against the mutagenicity of CSC.
To clarify the antioxidation effect of the various solvent fractionation of Tetragonia tetragoniodes which has been known to superior plants for the traditional prevention and treatment of stomach-related diseases, total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, vitamin E content, the elimination activity of a DPPH free radical and superoxide anion, inhibition activity of the superoxide generation, reducing power and metal chelating effects were estimated. The contents of the polyphenol compounds were highest in the DCM and EA fractionation, and the content of flavonoid was high in the order of HX and EA fractionation. The vitamin E content showed high in the order of the HX and DCM fractionation among solvent fractions. $IC_{50}$ for the elimination effect of a DPPH radical were estimated as 554.25 and $394.96{\mu}g/ml$ in the DCM and EA fractions, respectively. These values were higher than that of BHT $784.7{\mu}g/ml$ widely used in antioxidation effect. The inhibition activity of the superoxide generation using the T. tetragoniodes solvent fractions represented the effects similar to that of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol known to prevent the lipoprotein oxidation, but lower consequences than that of the phenol-resins, BHT and BHA, respectively. In the antioxidation activity derived by the reducing capability, the EA fractionation in a 1.5 mg/ml concentration showed higher than that of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol.

In this paper, we investigated the electrical properties of triisopropylsilyl (TIPS) pentacene organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) depending on solvent type. We spin coated TIPS pentacene by using chlorobenzene, p-xylene, chloroform, and toluene as solvents. Fabricated OTFT with chlorobenzene shows field-effect mobility of $1.0{\times}10^{-2}cm^2/V{\cdot}s$, on/off ratio of $4.3{\times}10^3$ and threshold voltage of 5.5 V. In contrast, with chloroform, the mobility is $5.8{\times}10^{-7}cm^2/V{\cdot}s$, on/off ratio of $1.1{\times}10^2$ and threshold voltage of 1.7 V. Moreover we measured the grain size of each TIPS pentacene solvent by atomic force microscopy (AFM). From these results, it can be concluded that a solvent with higher boiling point results in better electrical characteristics due to large grain size and high crystallinity of TIPS pentacene layer. In this paper TIPS pentacene with chlorobenzene shows the best electrical properties.

The halophyte Artemisia scoparia is an edible medicinal plant, with insecticidal, anti-inflammatory, anticholesterol, antipyretic, and antibacterial effects. The aim of this study was to assess the inhibitory effect of crude extract and solvent-partitioned fractions obtained from A. scoparia on MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity in phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA)-stimulated human fibrosarcoma HT-1080 cells using four different activity tests: gelatin zymography, MMP enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), wound healing assay, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and Western blot assay. A. scoparia samples were extracted twice with methylene chloride (MC) and twice with methanol (MeOH). After the MC and MeOH crude extracts were combined, the combined crude extracts showed a significant inhibitory effect against MMP-2 and MMP-9 enzymes. They were then fractionated into n-hexane, 85% (v/v) aqueous methanol (85% (v/v) aq.MeOH), n-butanol, and water according to solvent polarity. Among the four solvent-partitioned fractions, n-hexane and 85% (v/v) aq. MeOH fractions significantly inhibited MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity and cell mobility. In addition, the n-hexane and 85% (v/v) aq.MeOH fractions effectively inhibited MMP-2 and -9 activity in the gelatin zymography and MMP ELISA assay. In the wound healing assay, RT-PCR, and Western blot assay, all solvent-partitioned fractions, except the H2O fraction, significantly suppressed cell migration, as well as the expression levels of MMP-2 and -9 mRNA and proteins.
