  • In this paper, we propose a new ship scheduling set packing model considering limited risk or variance. The set packing model is used in many applications, such as vehicle routing, crew scheduling, ship scheduling, cutting stock and so on. As long as the ship scheduling is concerned, there exits many unknown external factors such as machine breakdown, climate change and transportation cost fluctuation. However, existing ship scheduling models have not considered those factors apparently. We use a quadratic set packing model to limit the variance of expected cost of ship scheduling problems under stochastic spot rates. Set problems are NP-complete, and additional quadratic constraint makes the problems much harder. We implement Kelley's cutting plane method to replace the hard quadratic constraint by many linear constrains and use branch-and-bound algorithm to get the optimal integral solution. Some meaningful computational results and comments are provided.

  • We describe a solution to the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equation $\frac{dI}{dt}-\frac{1}{\tau}$I(t)=cV(t) where V(t) is a constant multiple of a Gaussian white noise. Our solution is based on a discrete set of Gaussian white noise obtained by taking sample points from a sum of single frequency harmonics that have random amplitudes, random frequencies, and random phases. Hence, it is different from the solution by the standard random walk using random numbers generated by the Box-Mueller algorithm. We prove that the power of the signal has the additive property, from which we derive that the Lyapunov characteristic exponent for our solution is positive. This compares with the solution by other methods where the noise is kept to be in an error range so that its Lyapunov exponent is negative.

  • The significant structure theory of liquids has been successfully applied to the sodium ammonia solution. In applying the theory to sodium ammonia solution, we assumed there were four species in solution, i.e., sodium cation, solvated electron, triple ion, and free electron and equilibria existed between them. Based on these assumptions, we set up the model explaining the anomalous properties of sodium ammonia solution. The partition function for sodium ammonia solution is composed of the partition functions for the above four species and also for the Debye-Huckel excess free energy term. Agreements between calculated and experimental values of the thermodynamic quantities, such as molar volume, vapor pressure, partial molar enthalpy and entropy, and chemical potential as well as viscosity are quite satisfactory.

  • Computation of moving interface by the level set method typically requires the reinitialization of level set function. An inaccurate estimation of level set function $\phi$ results in incorrect free-surface capturing and thus errors such as mass gain/loss. Therefore, an accurate and robust reinitialization process is essential to the simulation of free-surface flows. In the present paper, we pursue further development of the reinitialization process, which evaluates level set function directly using a normal vector on the interface without solving there-distancing equation of hyperbolic type. The Taylor-Galerkin approximation and P1P1 splitting/SUPG (Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin) FEM are adopted to discretize advection equation of the level set function and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, respectively. Advection equation and re-initialization process of free surface capturing are validated with benchmark problems, i.e., a broken dam flow and timereversed single vortex flow. The simulation results are in good agreement with the existing results.

  • A sensitive, simple and highly selective liquid chromatography method of determination for extraction of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride from Allegra D tablet was developed. The chief benefit of the present method is the minimal sample preparation, as the procedure is only filtering through pore syringe filter. Two drugs (pseudoephedrine hydrochloride, fexofenadine) were separated on a C$_{18}$ column and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The method had a chromatographic run time of 8.0 min. 1 ml of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride solution (1 mg/ml) was filtered through 0.22 um pore syringe filter. 50 ul of filtering solution was injected to HPLC pump and we knew the retention time (1.85 min) of separating of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride using UV detector at 280 nm. We used C$_{18}$ column (4.6 mm${\times}$250 mm), mobile phase solution (<0.05 mol/L NaH$_2$PO$_4$, 2 ml/L H$_3$PO$_4$>/CH$_3$CN / sodium dodesyl sulfate = 60 ml / 40 ml / 1 g). We separated psedoephedrine hydrochloride at run time of 1.85 min from Allegra D tablet solution (1 mg/ml) filtered through 0.22 um pore syringe filter using UV detector at 280 nm. Flow rate was set at 1.0 ml/min and the column temperature was set at 40$^{\circ}C$. Psedoephedrine hydrochloride solution (1 mg/ml) separated from Allegra D tablet was filtered through 0.22 um pore syringe filter and injected 50 ul. We confirmed the peak of psedoephedrine hydrochloride at same retention time and the separating solution was freeze-dried. In conclusion, A simple isocratic reverse-phase HPLC method has been developed that provides excellent separation of pseudoephedrine from Allegra D tablet.

  • A level set based topological shape optimization using extended B-spline basis functions is developed for steady state heat conduction problems. The only inside of complicated domain is identified by the level set functions and taken into account in computation. The solution of Hamilton-Jacobi equation leads to an optimal shape according to the normal velocity field determined from the sensitivity analysis, minimizing a thermal compliance while satisfying a volume constraint. To obtain exact shape sensitivity, the precise normal and curvature of geometry need to be determined using the level set and B-spline basis functions. The nucleation of holes is possible whenever and wherever necessary during the optimization using a topological derivative concept.

  • Column subtraction, originally proposed by Harche and Thompson(]994), is an exact method for solving large set covering, packing and partitioning problems. Since the constraint set of ship scheduling problem(SSP) have a special structure, most instances of SSP can be solved by LP relaxation. This paper aims at applying the column subtraction method to solve SSP which can not be solved by LP relaxation. For remained instances of unsolvable ones, we subtract columns from the finale simplex table to get another integer solution in an iterative manner. Computational results having up to 10,000 0-1 variables show better performance of the column subtraction method solving the remained instances of SSP than complex branch-and-bound algorithm by LINDO.

  • The resolvent operator approach of [2] is applied to solve a set-valued variational inclusion problem in ordered Hilbert spaces. The resolvent operator under consideration is called relaxed resolvent operator and we demonstrate some of its properties. To obtain the solution of a set-valued variational inclusion problem, an iterative algorithm is developed and weak-RRD set-valued mapping is used. The problem as well as main result of this paper are more general than many previous problems and results available in the literature.
