  • Accelerated carbonation is a technique that can be used as a CCS technology for $CO_2$ sequestration of approximately 5~20% in a stable solid through the precipitation of carbonate. An alkaline inorganic waste material such as ash, slag, and cement paste are generated from incinerators, accelerated carbonation offers the advantage of lower transport and processing costs at the same generation location of waste and $CO_2$. In this study, we evaluated an amount of $CO_2$ sequestration in various types of inorganic alkaline waste processed by means of accelerated carbonation. A quantitative evaluation of $CO_2$ real sequestration based on a TG/DTA analysis, the maximum 118.88 $g/kg_{-waste}$ of $CO_2$ in paper sludge fly ash, the maximum 134.46 $g/kg_{-waste}$ of $CO_2$ in municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash, the maximum 9.72 $g/kg_{-waste}$ of $CO_2$ in industrial solid waste incinerator fly ash, and the maximum $18.19g/kg_{-waste}$ of $CO_2$ in waste cement paste.

  • The treatment of heavy metal, in the waste ash from incinerator and mine solid waste, by using alkali-soluble acrylic copolymer emulsion, that is effective in the absorption of heavy metal has been studied. It seemed that alkali soluble acrylic copolymer emulsion was very effective in the absorption of Hg, Pb, Cd and Cu in this test. Also, eco-friendly thixotropic grout, using alkali soluble acrylic copolymer emulsion, that is effective in the absorption of heavy metal, for the recycling of waste ash from incinerator and mine solid waste has been tested. It was observed that waste ash could be used as a raw material of eco-friendly thixotropic grout mortar due to the effectiveness of alkali soluble acrylic copolymer emulsion in the fixation of heavy metals including $Cr^{6+}$ from waste ash in this test.

  • Experimental studies have been performed to observe the basic phenomena of waste bed combustion in MSW incinerator. A reduced scale apparatus was utilized to simulate the combustion behavior in real plant with 1-dimensional transient behavior at the experimental setup, which uses wet cubic wood with ash content as simulated waste. LHV (lower heating value) of solid fuel, fuel particle size and flow rate of combustion air were taken as important parameters of the bed combustion. For the quantitative analysis, FPR (flame propagation rate), TBT (total burn-out time) and PBT (particle burn-out time) was defined. LHV represent the capability of heat release of the fuel, so that a higher LHV results in faster reaction rate of the fuel bed, which is shown by higher FPR. Fuel particle size is related with surface area per unit mass as well as heat and mass transfer coefficient. As the particle size increases the FPR decreases owing to decreasing specific surface area. Air injection supplies oxygen to the reaction zone. However oversupply of combustion air increases convection cooling of the bed and possibly extinguishes the flame.

  • In this study, operation data from an actual plant in M city were analyzed to evaluate effects of water supply into sewage sludge on the co-incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) and sewage sludge. Design capacity of the stoker incinerator is 50 m3/day. Maximum portion of sewage sludge in the total waste input was 20%. According to this research, moisture content increase up to 85% of sewage sludge could be possible by water supply on MSW input to the incinerator. Therefore, stable operation of incinerator could be achieved. As water was added into sewage sludge up to 85%, input quantity of sewage sludge to frequency (Hz) was similar to theoretical input. Also, it is concluded that stable management of incinerator without leachate combustion and damages of refractory bricks and castable could be achieved by the reduction of low heating value.

  • The present study discusses about the combustion and thermal flow characteristics of a G+R type incinerator, which is under construction for MAPO Incineration system, to evaluate the effects of various operating and design parameters. A bed combustion model is developed to simulate the waste bed combustion on the stoker. The effects of waste composition and primary air distribution are estimated. The results of the waste bed combustion model is applied to CFD(computational fluid dynamics) simulation, which simulates the detail of the thermal flow in the combustion chamber. The effects of bypass damper opening ratio, primary air distribution, and secondary air jet configuration are discussed.

  • Concentrations of the principal volatile organic compounds, such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p,o-xylene, styrene, and chlorobenzene were measured at the solid waste treatment plants classified into four categories; municipal waste incinerator, municipal waste landfill site, industrial waste incinerator and industrial waste landfill site. The average concentration of VOCs in industrial waste treatment facilities was 33.43 ppb and was significantly higher than that measured at municipal waste treatment facilities (4.71 ppb). The average toluene concentrations measured at incinerators (13.05 ppb) were a little higher than those measured at landfill sites (11.54 ppb). The contribution of the waste treatment facilities to the concentration of benzene (0.35 ppb) and o-xylene (0.15 ppb) in the industrial area was relatively small. However, toluene measured in the industrial waste treatment facilities was the most abundant VOCs with the average concentration of 21.37 ppb. As a result of analyses of fingerprint, in cases of IISH and ILUS, a variety of compounds other than major VOCs were detected in high level. On the Pearson correlation analysis, the correlation was generally positive and some pairs of these VOCs were very strongly correlated (correlation coefficient > 0.75).

  • In this study, nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emission concentration was measured 3 times continuously for 24 hours from August 27, 2018 to October 22, 2018 and non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) spectrometer was used to calculate $N_2O$ concentration of exhaust gas from municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator. As a result of $N_2O$ emission characteristics, it is estimated that $N_2O$ emission concentration is due to the difference of furnace temperature, oxygen concentration rather than the chemical component of waste. The measured $N_2O$ emission concentration of MSW incinerator was obtained in the range of 53.6 ~ 59.5 ppm and the total average concentration was measured 55.6 ppm. Therefore, the amount of $N_2O$ emissions calculated from the $N_2O$ concentration was $98.05kg\;day^{-1}$ on average and the amount of $N_2O$ distribution in the range of $90.41{\sim}108.44kg\;day^{-1}$ was obtained. As a result, the $N_2O$ emission factor of the MSW incinerator was estimated to be $1,066.13g_{N_2O}\;ton_{waste^{-1}}$. The estimated $N_2O$ emission factor of the MSW incinerator was 20 times higher than calculated emission factor used in the Tier 2 method. Consequently, it is considered that the method of calculating the amount of $N_2O$ emission in the MSW incineration facilities using waste type and incineration amount needs to be supplemented to ensure accuracy.

  • A pilot scale (200kg/hr) pyrolysis melting incineration system is designed and constructed in Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. The incineration process is composed of pyrolysis, gas combustion, ash melting, gas stabilization, waste heating boiler, and bag filter. For each unit process, experimental approaches have been conducted to find optimal design and operating conditions. Especially, a pyrolysis is very important process in that it is a way of energy recirculation and minimizing the waste products. This paper presents major results of the most efficient operating conditions in a pilot scale pyrolysis melting incinerator.

  • The Quality of municipal solid waste incineration ash (incineration ash) was analyzed for the purpose of the reusing for concrete material. The folwability and strength properties of concrete mixed with incinerator ash were investigated. CaO component was included more than 50% in chemical component of incinerator ash, mean size of 50% accumulated particle distribution of incinerator ash was about $25{\mu}m$. Particle shape of incinerator ash ($IA_1$) was massed the round shape with fine particle, particle shape of incinerator ash ($IA_2$) was piled up the sheet shape according to manufacture procedure. The Quality of concrete was effected by use of incinerator ash. When the incinerator Ash ($IA_2$) was used, slum of concrete was increased and dosage of high range water reducing agent was reduced. However, strength development of concrete was decreased. Dosage of high range water reducing agent was increased by combined use of incinerator ash ($IA_2$) and diatomite powder, but strength development of concrete was improved. Ratio of compressive strength and tensile strength was in the range 85%~105% of CEB-FIP model code.
