Solid state grain growth (SSCG) is a method of growing large single crystals from seed single crystals by abnormal grain growth in a small-grained matrix. During grain growth, pores are often trapped in the matrix and remain in single crystals. Aerosol deposition (AD) is a method of manufacturing films with almost full density from nano grains by causing high energy collision between substrates and ceramic powders. AD and SSCG are used to grow single crystals with few pores. BaTiO3 films are coated on (100) SrTiO3 seeds by AD. To generate grain growth, BaTiO3 films are heated to 1,300 ℃ and held for 10 h, and entire films are grown as single crystals. The condition of grain growth driving force is ∆Gmax < ∆Gc ≤ ∆Gseed. On the other hand, the condition of grain growth driving force in BaTiO3 AD films heat-treated at 1,100 and 1,200 ℃ is ∆Gc < ∆Gmax, and single crystals are not grown.
The growth process of solid grains in a liquid matrix is usually explained in tem1S of Ostwald ripening. The variation of growth (dissolution) rate as a function of grain size during Ostwald ripening predicted that the dissolution rate becomes very large as grain size decreases but the growth rate of a large grain is rather limited. Therefore. a rather uniform size distribution of grain size is maintained once after the quasi-equilibrium state is reached. Quite frequently, however, the exaggerated grain growth (EGG) is observed to occur: only a limited number of grains grow exceptionally. From the observation that the EGG occurs only for the faceted grains with apparently straight solid-liquid interfaces, the EGG is suggested to be the consequence of growth process controlled by 2-dimensional nucleation. In this study, the result by computer calculation on the grain growth process controlled by various mechanisms will be given.
For semi-solid forging with aluminuim alloys, it is required to develope the globular grain structure. It was studide that cold upsetting ration in SIMA process has effect on the globularization of grain structure. Globular microstructure was generated without cold upsettings for commercial aluminium alloys. In the case of A12024, the range of grain size was 40 .approx. 50 .mu. m. The grain growth in growth in globular microstructure depend on heating time. Spur gear was forged in semi-solid state to investigate the forging condition for A12024 with hydraulic press.
YBa2Cu3Ox ceramics superconductors fabricated using solid state reaction usually contain second phases, such as BaCuO2 and CuO. These second phases are located long the grain boundaries and enhance the abnormal growth of YBa2Cu3Ox grains and, consequently, generate the microcracks. These second phaases were reduced by adding Y2BaCuO5 into solid state reacted YBa2Cu3Ox ceramics. Y2BaCuO5 reacts with grain boundary second phases and reduces the grian size of the ceramics. It was observed the critical current density was improved by adding Y2BaCuO5 into solid state reacted YBa2Cu3Ox ceramic superconductor.
Grain-growth behavior in the $95Na_{1/2}Bi_{1/2}TiO_3-5BaTiO_3$ (mole fraction, NBT-5BT) system has been investigated with the addition of $Na_2CO_3$. When $Na_2CO_3$ is added to NBT-5BT, the growth rate is higher than desired and grains are already impinging each other during the initial stage of sintering. The grain size decreases as the sintering temperature increases. With the addition of $Na_2CO_3$, a liquid phase infiltrates the interfaces between grains during sintering. The interface structure can be changed to be more faceted and the interface migration rate can increase due to fast material transport through the liquid phase. As the sintering temperature increases, the impingement of abnormal grains increases because the number of abnormal grains increases. Therefore, the average grain size of abnormal grains can be decreased as the temperature increases. The phenomenon can provide evidence that grain coarsening in NBT-5BT with addition of $Na_2CO_3$ is governed by the growth of facet planes, which would occur via mixed control.
Optimum conditions for production of semi-solid Al-Zn-Mg alloy billets was carried out by the Taguchi design method. And, Al-Zn-Mg alloy billets contained Sc (free, 0.1 and 0.3 mass %) were fabricated at optimum conditions. Evolution of microstructure in semi-solid state was investigated through various liquid fractions, holding times and holding temperatures. The Al-Zn-Mg alloy billets reheated at $615^{\circ}C$ during 30min are grain growth and it was fractured due to increasing liquid fraction before quenching. And, during reheating up to $600^{\circ}C$, grain growth of Al-Zn-Mg alloy billets contained Sc (0.1 and 0.3 mass %) was not occurred in comparison with those of Al-Zn-Mg alloy without Sc. It was thought that $Al_3Sc$ phases have a pinning effect in grain boundary and Sc content of 0.1 mass% is able to inhibit grain growth effectively through reheating process.

The master sintering curve (MSC) is derived from densification data over a range of heating rates and temperatures. To improve the accuracy, several modifications were proposed: multi-phase MSC for solid state sintering with phase changes, MSC for liquid phase sintering, and MSC with consideration of grain growth. The developed MSC models were applied to several material systems such as molybdenum, stainless steels, and tungsten heavy alloys (WHA), in order to evaluate the effect of compaction pressure, phase change, grain growth, and composition on densification, to classify regions having different sintering mechanism, and to help engineer design, optimize, and monitor sintering cycles.
The initial sintering behaviour of the powder injection molded (PIMed) W-l5wt%Cu nanocomposite powder was investigated. The W-Cu nanocomposite powder was produced by the mechanochemical process consisting of high energy ball-milling and hydrogen reduction of W blue powder-CuO mixture. Solid state sintering of the powder compacts was conducted at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 2~10 hours in hydrogen at mosphere. The sintering behaviour was examined and discussed in terms of microstructural developments such as W-Cu aggregate formation, pore size distribution and W grain growth. The volume shrinkage of PIM specimen was slightly larger than that of PM(conventional PM specimen), being due to fast local densification in the PIM. Remarkable decrease of carbon and oxygen in the PIM enhanced local densification in the early stage of solid state sintering process with eliminating very fine pores less than 10 nm. In addition, such local densiflcation in the PIM is presumably responsible for mitigating of W-grain growth in the initial stage.
MgFe2O4 formation, grain growth in Fe2O3, Fe solid-solution limit in MgO for MgO-Fe2O3 mixture were studied by means of investigating the distribution of phases and compositions in reaction area between MgO and Fe2O3. The reaction area at equlibrium was composed with MgO-FexO matrix and MgFe2O4 precipitation, MgFe2O4 was formed by precipitating from MgO-FexO matrix dependent on oxygen partial pressure. Fe contents was exponentially decreased with diffusion distance in MgO single crystal, and thus Fe solid-solution limitation in MgO was about 4mol%. The grain growth rate in Fe2O3 base was increased with Mg contents diffused from MgO single crystal.
The grain growth behavior of M-type Sr hexaferrite (SrM) grains is investigated with the addition of MnCO3. First, the SrM powder is synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction. The powder compacts of SrM are sintered at 1250℃ for 2 h with various amounts of MnCO3 (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 4.0 mol%). There is no secondary solid phase in any of the sintered samples. Relative density increases when MnCO3 is added to the SrM. Obvious abnormal grain growth does not appear in any of the SrM samples with MnCO3. The average grain size increases when 0.5 mol% MnCO3 is added to the SrM. However, as the amount of MnCO3 increase to over 0.5 mol%, the average grain size decreases. These observations allow us to conclude that the growth of SrM grains is governed by the two-dimensional nucleation grain growth mechanism, and the critical driving force for the growth of a grain decreases as the amount of MnCO3 increases.
