  • The aim of this study was to analysis the Heating/cooling performance of Solar Window System built in apartments. The solar window is the idea to integrate daylight as a third form of solar energy into a PV/Solar Collector system and allows more control due to the possibility to close the reflectors. However, there can be a conflict between the desire for on one hand daylight and view and on the other hand optimal energy conversion for the PV/Solar Collector system. The process of this study is as follows: 1) The Solar Window system is designed through the investigation of previous paper and work. 2)The simulation program(ESP-r, Therm5.0, Window6.0) was used in energy performance analysis. The reference model of simulation was made up to analysis energy performance on Solar Window system. 3)Selected reference model(Floors:15, Area of Unit:$148.5m^2$) for heating/cooling energy analysis, Energy performance simulation with various variants, such as U-value of Solar Window system according to its position and angle. Consequently, When Solar Window system is equipped with balcony window of Apartment, Annual heating and cooling energy of reference model was cut down about 5%~11%.

  • A study was conducted to analyze data from 1981 to 2020 for understanding the impact of climate on solar energy generation. A significant increase of 104.6 kWhm-2 was observed in the annual cumulative solar radiation over this period. Notably, the distribution of solar radiation shifted, with the solar radiation in Busan rising from the seventh place in 1981 to the second place in 2020 in South Korea. This study also examined the correlation between long-term temperature trends and solar radiation. Areas with the highest solar radiation in 2020, such as Busan, Gwangju, Daegu, and Jinju, exhibited strong positive correlations, suggesting that increased solar radiation contributed to higher temperatures. Conversely, regions like Seosan and Mokpo showed lower temperature increases due to factors such as reduced cloud cover. To evaluate the impact on solar energy production, simulations were conducted using climate data from both years. The results revealed that relying solely on historical data for solar energy predictions could lead to overestimations in some areas, including Seosan or Jinju, and underestimations in others such as Busan. Hence, considering long-term climate variability is vital for accurate solar energy forecasting and ensuring the economic feasibility of solar projects.

  • Since the solar energy resource is the main input for sizing any solar photovoltaic system and solar thermal power system, it is essential to utilize the solar radiation data as a application and development of solar energy system increase. It will be necessary to understand and evaluate the insolation data. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has begun collecting horizontal global insolation data since May, 1982 and direct normal insolation data since December 1992 at 16 different locations in Korea. Because of a poor reliability of existing data, KIER's new data will be extensively used by solar energy system users as well as by research institutes. From the results, the yearly averaged horizontal global insolation was turned out 3.60kWh/$m^2$/day and a significant difference of horizontal global insolation is observed between 1982~1990 and 1991~1999, 2000~2008 through 16 different cities in Korea.

  • This study is on the design and evaluation of Zero Energy Solar House(ZeSH) including active solar heating system. Various innovative technologies such as super insulation, passive solar systems, super window, ventilation heat recovery system...etc were analyzed by individual and combination for the success of ZeSH. The ESP-r simulation program was used for this. Simulation results shows that almost 77% of heating load can be reduced with the following configuration of 200mm super insulation, super windows, passive solar system and 0.3 ventilation rate per hour. Active solar heating system (ASHS) was designed for the rest of the heating load including hot water heating load. The solar assisted heat pump is used for the auxiliary heating device in order to use air conditioner but not included in this study. The yearly solar fraction is 87% with a solar collector area of $28m^2$. The parametric studies as the influence of storage volume and collector area on the solar fraction was analyzed.

  • Currently, the world is paying keen attention to the production of renewable energy along with environmental issues, and the share of renewable energy in the world is rising above that of nuclear power. Especially when Korea, which is heavily dependent on foreign countries, needs to reconsider its national competitiveness due to the recent high oil prices, the government's energy policy is to develop and use renewable energy that replaces fossil fuels. In particular, solar energy, the most actively studied and commercialized field of renewable energy, is the main research for solar energy and is commercialized and used. However, the efficiency of solar energy has already reached saturation. Studies are also focusing on increasing the reflectivity of solar energy to increase efficiency. Therefore, this paper proposes a solar collection system that can utilize solar energy rather than solar energy. The proposed solar heat collection system uses solar tracking systems to effectively collect solar energy, particularly those that can be easily produced using single-modular reflectors and have price competitiveness. In addition, temperature measurement experiments with temperature measuring sensors were conducted to ensure reliability in order to verify the results interpreted.

  • Recently, an UAV using green energy for propulsion has been developed due to exhaustion of fossil fuel. This aircraft runs on electric motors rather than internal combustion engines, with electricity coming from fuel cells, solar cells, ultracapacitors, and/or batteries. Especially solar cells are installed in HALE UAV and flight tests are performed in the stratosphere. Although the solar powered UAV has the advantage of zero emission, its energy conversion efficiency is low and operation time is limited. Therefore, the solar powered UAV has been designed to operate with the secondary battery obtaining flexibility of energy management. In this study, we suggest the new operational concept of the solar powered UAV using directed-energy rayed from the surface of earth to UAV. An UAV is able to secure additional power through attaching solar cell to the lower surface of elevator. As a result, the additional energy supplied by directed-energy can improve the energy management and operational flexibility of the solar powered UAV.

  • Daegu Solar Power Tower Plant of 200 kW thermal capacity was developed for the first time in Korea, 2011. Measurement of the heat flux distribution is essential to evaluate the solar energy concentrated by reflectors and to design a suitable receiver. The flux mapping technique, which uses a radiometer and a diffuse plate, is common for measurement of the heat flux distribution. Because the solar power tower plant has a wide concentration area, the flux mapping technique using a fixed diffuse plate is difficult to apply. Therefore, the flux distribution in the solar power tower plant should be measured by the flux mapping technique using a small moving bar. In this study, we measured flux distributions with the moving-bar system developed at the KIER solar furnace and evaluated its applicability for the solar power tower plant.

  • Renewable energy is not a new terminology. One of the fastest growing renewable energies is solar energy. The implementation of solar energy provides several advantages including the reduction of some of the environmental risks of fossil fuel consumption. This research elaborated the importance of the adaption of solar energy by developing a spatial decision support system (SDSS), while the Residential Solar Energy Adoption (RSEA) is an instantiation artifact in the form of an SDSS. As a GIS web-based application, RSEA allows stakeholders (e.g., utility companies, policymakers, service providers homeowners, and researchers) to navigate through locations on a map interactively. The maps highlight locations with high and low solar energy adoption potential that enables decision-makers (e.g., policymakers, solar firms, utility companies, and nonprofit organizations) to make decisions. A combined qualitative and quantitative methodological approach was used to evaluate the application's usability and user experience, and results affirmed the ability of the factors of utility, usefulness, and a positive user experience of the residential solar energy adoption of spatial decision support system (RSEA-SDSS). RSEA-SDSS in improving the decision-making process for potential various stakeholders, in utility, solar installations, policy making, and non-profit renewable energy domains.
