A study on colored water treatment at purification plant (정수장 색수의 처리기법에 관한 연구)

  • There are many reservoirs used as the source of water supply and they show various specific characteristics in water quality depend seasonal. Especially, there were not a little variations of water quality in summer, as a natural consequence it follows that stratification occured phenomenon and changed anaerobic condition in the bottom of reservoir, and then accumulated Fe and Mn substance in soil and sediment were resolved into water, it attributes to coloration. G purification plant located in Y gun is very small plant in which coloration occurs by Fe and Mn in every summer. Using this plant as a model, the removal methods of Fe and Mn were studied. After prechlorination plus LAS coagulation, Fe, Mn, $NH_3-N$ were decreased from 7.290 mg/l to 0.080 mg/l, from 0.480 mg/l to 0.075 mg/l, from 0.55 mg/l to 0.04 mg/l. But $THM_{s}$ was increased from 0.050 mg/l to 0.044 mg/l. It shows that the prechlorination plus LAS coagulation treatment process in purification plant is effective to remove Fe and Mn ion.

  • An organophosphorus insecticide, chlorpyrifos, has been of a great concern due to persistence, toxicity and accumulation in soils and groundwaters. This study deals with degradation efficiency and dechlorination kinetics of chlorpyrifos by various types of zerovalent irons (ZVIs) for effective remediation of the soils contaminated with chlorinated pesticides. Chlorpyrifos degradation rate was increased with increasing ZVI treatment amount and reaction time. The degradation rate and dechlorination kinetics of chlorpyrifos increased in the order of mZVI > nZVI > cZVI in solutions and soils. Dechlorination number value of chlorpyrifos by cZVI, nZVI and mZVI treatment exhibited 1.08, 3.09 and 3.18, respectively. In soils, degradation efficiency and kinetics of chlorpyrifos significantly were affected by moisture content because of the limited contact between ZVIs and chlorpyrifos. These results suggest that nanosized and functionalized mZVI could be effectively applied to degradation of chlorinated pesticides in the soil and aqueous environments.

  • Settled lifestyle as important to health and healing to medical tourism and wellness tourism in the 21st century has emerged as the best promising service industry. Jeju Island has a variety of local resources, and the directions was considered to spa industry promotion application it. Jeju Island has a variety of local resources which can be used for spa industry promotion. Jeju Island's beautiful natural environment, mineral resources, water resources, biological resources, agricultural products, traditional folk remedies available in Jeju's spa treatments. Using the local resources of Jeju, 'Jeju specialized spa treatments' can develop of 12 kinds of spa treatments. Namely, thalssotherapy, stone therapy, black sand poultice, hot-floored therapy using volcanic soil, thalassotherapy, drinking therapy, hydrotherapy, herbal/medicinal plants poultice, forest therapy, Spa cuisine, facial beauty, diet therapy. 12 kinds of Jeju specialized spa treatments development and service to the local resources of basic research on the physical and chemical characteristics, product development, clinical trials, efficacy studies should precede. In addition, customized spa services programs should be developed considering the propensity of customers, customer needs, and a spa type. And standardized program of spa services and need a manual painter. Medical tourism and wellness tourism in conjunction with efforts to be considered in order to increase the competitiveness of the spa industry in Jeju.

Mineral Medicine Described in the Oriental Medicine Book and Mineral Medicines Applicable to Atopic Dermatitis Treatment (한의서에 기재된 광물(鑛物) 약재 및 아토피피부염 활용 외용성 광물(鑛物) 약재)

  • A total of 93 mineral medicines are mentioned in the Chinese Bonchodogam(本草圖鑑). In Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑), 77 mineral medicines are listed, where 18 are from soil origin, 4 from gem origin, and 55 mineral medicines were originated from stone. In the Herblogy(本草學), which is the textbook used in most oriental medicine colleges in Korea, a total of 23 mineral medicines are listed. Of those, Cinnabaris, Alumen, Melanteritum, Realgar, Orpimentum, Sulfur, Lime from Donguibogam, additional eight which are Talcum, Calomelas, Minium, Calamina, Stannum, Hydrargyrum, Lithargyrum, Hydrargyrum Chloratum from Bonchodogam and Gypsum, Natrii Sulfas, Talcum, Cinnabaris, Sulfur, Arsenicum Sublimatum, Realgar, Calomelas, Minium, Calamina, Borax, Aurum, Glauberitum from Herblogy were selected as the mineral medicine applicable as external atopic dermatitis treatment. Most of the mineral medicines were generally regarded as toxic materials, and therefore, they were elaborately processed to remove toxicity before use. In accordance, it is necessary to discuss how to effectively remove toxicity from toxic mineral medicines. In addition, detoxification can be applied to those mineral medicines classified based on the index material or high content compounds, and if efficacy can be evaluated through various analytical methods, this can be applied to diverse inflammatory diseases as well as atopic dermatitis.

Field Treatment of Cow Manure Originated from the Clay Mineral Feeding and the Change of Nitrogen in Soils (점토광물 혼합 사료 급여로 발생된 우분의 토양 시용과 질소성분의 변화)

  • This study was conducted to examine the change of nitrogen in soils treated by cow manure originated from the clay mineral feeding. Bentonite, zeolite, and porphyry were feeded. CEC of the porphyry showed the lowest value, 12.02 cmol/㎏, among three kinds of clay mineral. The manure treated soils were incubated at 14, 18, 22, $25^{\circ}C$. CEC of the manure after bentonite, zeolite, porphyry feeding were 147.5, 137.0, and 114.0 cmol(+)/㎏, respectively. These values were higher than that of non-mineral treated manure, 107.5 cmol(+)/㎏. After 8 weeks incubation, there were no significant difference in the content of $NH_4-N$, but the content of $NO_3-N$ in soils were in order of zeolite treated > bentonite treated > porphyry treated > non-nimeral treated. These results suggested that the clay mineral adsorbed $NH_4\;^+-N$ and prevent the loss of nitrogen from soils.

Plant regeneration from hypocotyls explants of Astragalus sinicus L. (자운영(Astragalus sinicus L.) 배축절편으로부터 식물체 재생)

  • To investigate the optimal conditions for shoot organogenesis in Astragalus sinicus L., hypocotyl explants were cultured in Murashige & Skoog's (MS) medium supplemented with 0.1, 1.0, 2.0, or 4.0 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) for 6 weeks. 2,4-D concentration significantly effected morphogenesis: some produced calli with adventitious shoots and roots, some produced calli with adventitious roots, some produced only calli, and some produced deep-brownish calli with roots. The formation of calli with shoots and/or roots was observed at lower levels of 2,4-D, whereas calli without shoots or with deep-brownish roots were formed after treatment with higher levels of 2,4-D. Also, a shoot organogenesis ability of callus clones was observed after treatment with medium with 0.1 or 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D grown in MS medium with combinations of benzyl adenine (BA) and 2,4-D for 4 weeks. Medium with a combination of BA and 2,4-D was effective for shoot formation, whereas root organogenesis from calli decreased. The greatest amount of shoot formation was obtained when calli were cultured in MS medium containing 1.0 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.5 mg/L BA. Upon shoot transfer into 1/2 MS basal medium, plantlets developed, and the plantlets grew well in soil in a greenhouse.

The effect of phosphorus stress on the energy status and bacteroid content in soybean nodules (인산결핍이 대두근류의 bacteroid 함량과 energy 상태에 미치는 영향)

  • Expermient were conducted to determine the effect of phosphorus stress on bacteroid content and energy status of soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) nodules. Plants inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum MN 110 were grown with P-stressed (0.05 mM-P) and control (1 mM-P) treatment in the greenhouse. Phosphorus stress decreased nodule mass per plant and nodule mass to whole plant mass ratio. Phosphorus concentration in leaf, stem and root tissues were reduced by 75% but in nodule tissue was reduced only by 40% under phosphorus stress during 3 week experimental period. The bacteroid content per unit nodule mass and the distribution of total nitrogen and total phosphorus among the bacteroid and plant cell fractions of nodule were not affected significantly by phosphorus stress. Regardless of phosphorus treatment, 22% of the nitrogen and 27% of the phosphorus in whole nodules were associated with the bacteroid fraction. The ATP and total adenylate concentrations in and energy charge of whole nodule were decreased 77%, 46% and 37%, respectively, by phosphorus stress. The ATP concentration in and energy charge of the host plant cell fraction of nodules were decreased 86% and 59%, respectively, but these parametres in bacteroid in nodules were not affected by phosphorus stress. These results indicated that nodule is a strong phosphorus sink and that nodule growth and development are regulated to maintain a high phosphorus and energy content in bacteroid even when the host plant is subjected to phosphorus deficiency.

Environmental Bioresources Laboratory, Korea Research Institute of Biosicence and Biotechnology, Taejon, Korea, 1 Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Kyungpool< National University, Taegu, Korea - The biodegradation of chlorinated phenols in an artificial wastewater was investigated using a mixed culture. The mixed culture was composed of 8 microorganisms isolated from the soil contaminated with various chlorinated phenols. Pseudomonas sp. BM as a main constituent of a mixed culture was Gram-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, and rod-shaped, and did not grow at 41°C. It degraded 99% of initial 500 mg!1 of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in the minimal salts medium as a sole source of carbon and energy within 3 days. The degradation efficiency of Pseu.domon.as sp. BM was not affected by the other organic carbon and nitrogen compounds. Pseudomonas sp. BM was able to grow in a broad range of pH 5 - 8, and degrade 2,000 mg/1 PCP. In the experiment with an artificial wastewater containing chlorinated phenols, the degradation efficiency of the mixed culture was the range of 73% (2,4-dichlorophenol) -96% (2-chlorophenol) during an incubation of 7 days. In a continuous culture experiment, the degradation efficiency of mixed culture plus activated sludge was about 2 times higher than that of the control containing only activated sludge. These results indicate that it is possible to apply the mixed culture to other wastewaters containing chlorinated phenols.   • Effects of deficit irrigation by different soil moisture-based water potential on the reduction of green shoulder fruits in fresh tomato were investigated. Deficit irrigation with -30 kPa treatment significantly reduced green shoulder fruit by 53.7% compared to the -15 kPa treatment. The total concentrations of potassium in levels of whole fruit was not different between normal red fruit (NRF) and green shoulder fruit (GSF). However, the concentrations of potassium in distal part of GSF lower than that of a basal part of GSF Total soluble sugar contents in NRF and GSF were increased during the maturation periods. Contents of starch in NRF and distal part of GSF were decreased during the maturation periods. However, contents of starch in basal part of GSF was not change during the maturation periods. Activity of sucrose phosphate synthase was higher in NRF than that of GSF. Activity of acid invertase in NRF and GSF decreased rapidly during the maturation periods. Activity of acid invertase was significantly different in distal and basal part of GSF. Total activities of peroxidase and alcohol dehydrogenase in NRF were higher than that of GSF.

The Effect of Developed SCB Liquid Fertilizer on the Growth of Kentucky Bluegrass (성분이 추가된 SCB저농도액비가 켄터키블루그래스의 생육에 미치는 효과)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of developed SCB (DSCB) liquid fertilizer produced by adding N, P and K at SCB liquid fertilizer on the growth of kentucky bluegrass. Two different N sources used in DSCB were ammonium sulfate (DSCB-A) and urea (DSCB-U), respectively. Fertilizer treatments were designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), control (CF; chemical fertilizer), DSCB-A1 ($200\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$DSCB-A), OSCB-A2 ($250\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$DSCB-A), OSCB-U ($250\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$DSCB-U) and CF+SCB (CF+$250\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$SCB). Every treatment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In kentucky bluegrass, turf color index, chlorophyll index, dry weight and nutrient contents were measured. Results were as follows; It was hardly affected by DSCB and SCB application in investigation of chemical properties of soil. Turf color index and chlorophyll index in DSCB and SCB treatments were increased by 1~2% and 19~24% than NF, respectively and similar to CF. As applied with DSCB and SCB, dry weight of DSCB-U and CF+SCB was increased by 36% and 10% than CF, respectively, but similar to that of OSCB-A1 and DSCB-A2. Evaluated with turf quality and growth, DSCB-U was the best in all treatment and OSCB-A1 the most efficient. These results indicated that applications of OSCB and SCB promoted turf quality and growth of kentucky bluegrass or similar to CF, so that they were expected to replace chemical fertilizers.
