  • Waste fills resulting from coal mining should consist of large, free-draining sedimentary rocks fragments. The successful performance of these fills is related to the strength and durability of the individual rock fragments. When fills are made of shale fragments, some fragments will be durable and some will degrade into soil particles resulting from slaking and inter-particle point loads. The degraded material fills the voids between the intact fragments, and results in settlement. A laboratory program with point load and slake durability tests as well as thin section examination of sixty-eight shale samples from the Appalachian region of the United States revealed that pore micro-geometry has a major influence on degradation. Under saturated and unsaturated conditions, the shales absorb water, and the air in their pores is compressed, breaking the shales. This breakage was more pronounced in shales with smooth pore boundaries and having a diameter equal to or smaller than 0.060 mm. If the pore walls were rough, the air-pressure breaking mechanism was not effective. However, pore roughness (measured by the fractal dimension) had a detrimental effect on point load resistance. This study indicated that the optimum shales to resist both slaking as well as point loads are those that have pores with a fractal dimension equal to 1.425 and a diameter equal to or smaller than 0.06 mm.

  • The study on mechanical behavior of the structure at the site includes experimental method and numerical analysis method. Experimental method is categorized into true-scale test and laboratory model test. A laboratory model test is to monitor the failure mechanism with a model simulated similar with a real ground so as to identify the quantitative result, while a true-scale model test is the approach which enables to identify the potential problems that may occur with a simulated construction situation similar with a real site circumstance. Thus this study was intended to carry out the experimental test of non open-cut excavation by pipe roof method which is mostly common in domestic sites. as well as was aimed at identifying the ground behavior occurred during pipe penetration using laboratory model test. Appropriate reduced-scale model was selected, taking into account of domestic geological characteristics and operation characteristics of traditional and high-speed rail trains and the qualitative evaluation of displacement was carried out based on a certain ground loss volume depending on excavation after categorizing trackbed settlement pattern by depth of top soil.

  • This thesis is to investigate the sliding behavior of cantilever retaining wall by using the commercially available program of FLAC to simulate its behavior numerically. Cantilever retaining walls with flat base, sloped base and base with shear key, uniform surcharges being applied on the surface of backfill, were investigated to figure out appropriate location of shear key beneath the base of wall and, thus, its applicability to field condition was assessed by comparing the analyzed results to each other. On the other hand, previously performed centrifuge model test results (Eum, 1996) were analyzed numerically with FLAC to compare test results with respect to characteristics of load-settlement of surcharges and load-lateral movement of wall. Based on the failure mechanism observed during centrifuge tests, limit equilibrium method of finding the ultimate load inducing the sliding failure of wall was used to compare with values of the ultimate load obtained from conventional method of limit equilibrium method. Therefore, appropriate location of shear key was determined to mobilize the maximum resistance against sliding failure of wall.

  • When some structures are constructed over the sanitary landfill, the waste should be treated by means of replacement and other ways. Otherwise, various problems like a ground contamination, settlement, reduction of bearing capacity and others may be generated. To find out the optimal method of treatment, the properties of the ground have to be inspected. In this study, the preliminary investigation was conducted to find out the characteristic of this site which is considered as insanitary waste landfill. Furthermore, the shape and the amount of the waste was investigated by subsurface investigation like a boring and sampling methods. In addition, the degree of ground contamination and disposal method of refuse was examined.

  • For analyze of the bearing capacity, skin friction and settlements of pile on axial compressive loading, both Load transfer tests of pile and pile loading test in field have application to commonly before pile installing. A bearing capacity of pile was affected by the characteristics of surrounding ground of pile. Especially, that is very different because of evaluation of settlement due to each soil conditions of ground depths. The ground characteristics using evaluation of bearing capacity of pile through load transfer analysis depends on N values of SPT, and then a bearing capacity of pile installed soft ground and refilled area may be difficult to rational evaluation. An evaluation of bearing capacity on pile applied axial compressive loading was effected by strength of ground installed pile, unconfined compressive strength at pile tip, pile diameter, rough of excavated surface, confining pressure and deformation modules of rock etc and these are commonly including the unreliability due to slime occurred excavation works. Load transfer characteristics considered ground conditions take charge of load transfer of large diameter pile was investigated through case study applied load transfer tests. To these, matrix analytical technique of load transfer using finite differential equation developed and compared with the results of pile load test.

  • The use of vertical drain method to improve the soft soil ground has been continuously increased in Korea such as Busan New Port, Saemangeum reclamation project and so on in Korea. Especially PBD(Plastic Board Drain), one of the vertical drain, has been widely used due to the economic feasibility, construction compatibility and quality control. However in case of using PBD, discharge capacity reduction caused by creep deformation of the PBD filter, bending, kinking and so on can be occurred. Therefore the purpose of this study is to solve these problems by developing Deformation-Compatible Vertical Drain, DCVD which allows to deform with consolidation settlement without bending and kinking of vertical drain. In order to investigate the performance of DCVD developed in this study, discharge capacity test, centrifuge model test and complex discharge capacity test for both PBD and DCVD are performed and the results are compared.

  • Rammed Aggregate Pier method is intermediate foundation of deep and shallow foundation, it has been built on world wide. But the investigation and research in domestic is not accomplished. In this paper, examined details of different spacing of piles, bearing capacities, respectively, conclude with recommendations on how RAP can be used in future needs. This documentation further provides comparisons of the laboratory test results which were obtained from differenciate the spacing of piles, namely installed rammed aggregate pier. Strain control test was conducted to determine the bearing capacities of the piers; 20mm, 30mm and 40mm diameter drilling equipment to drill holes were installed in sand at initial relative densities of 40%. By comparing different spacing of piles, in this experiment, piles are spaced structually span, form a ring shape, narrowing the distance of each other, to the center. the result shows that as diameter of pier is bigger in diameter, bearing capacity also dramatically increased due to raised stiffness. Also, the space between each piers narrowed, settlement rate of soil was decreased significantly. From the test results, as the space between each piles were getting closer, allows greater chances to have resistance to deformation, shows improved stability of structures.

  • The one-dimensional compressibility of sand is an important property for the estimation of settlement or deformation of sand deposits. The $K_0$ value of sand is also an important design parameter. Experimental results are presented in this paper to study the compressibility of sand in $K_0$ consolidation tests. The $K_0$ consolidation tests were carried out using a triaxial cell and a plane-strain apparatus. Specimens prepared using both the moist tamping and the water sedimentation methods were tested. The testing data demonstrate that the type of testing apparatus does not affect the $K_0$ measurement if proper boundary conditions are imposed in the tests. The data also show that the compressibility and the $K_0$ value of loose sand specimens prepared using the moist tamping method are very sensitive to the variation of void ratio. The $K_0$ values measured from these tests do not agree with the $K_0$ values calculated from Jaky's equation. The compressibility and $K_0$ values of sand obtained from tests on specimens prepared using different preparation methods are different which may reflect the influence of soil fabrics or structures on the one dimensional compression behavior of sand.

  • The settlement occurring during landfill construction often causes a damage of drainage system. Clogging can reduce the hydraulic conductivity of the Leachate Collection and Drainage System, which results in the increase of leachate level within the landfill. Consequently, the insulation ability of leachate will be decreased. The main purpose of this project is to estimate a newly designed reinforced drainage geotextile (RDG) combining non-woven fabrics with geogrid for minimizing the destruction of drainage layer as well as evaluating RDG's application in the leachate collection and drainage system. Thus, the project observed the permittivity changes of RDG, and evaluated the drainage ability using RDG in the leachate collection and drainage system.
