This survey study was performed to evaluate the pollution level of playgrounds for children at 49 different sampling sites in Seoul metropolitan. Results were as follows. 1. Soil pH ranged from 6.0 to 9.2. 2. Average concentrations of heavy metals were 0.101 mg/kg of Cd, 4.470 mg/kg of Cu, 0.10 mg/kg of As, 5.35 mg/kg of Pb, 0.017 mg/kg of $Cr^{6+}$ 0.0051 mg/kg of Hg, which were lower than Korean soil precaution level. 3. The SPCs of all areas were below 100, which is 1st grade. In conclusion, the pollution level of playgrounds for children was safe.
The activity concentration of primordial radionuclides i.e., $^{238}U$ series, $^{232}Th$ series and $^{40}K$, in soil samples collected from Udagamandalam environment, have been measured by employing NaI (Tl) Gamma ray Spectrometer. The absorbed gamma dose rate has also been simultaneously measured by using both Environmental Radiation Dosimeter at each soil sampling location (ambient gamma dose) as well as from the gamma dose derived from the activity concentration of the primordial radionuclides. The results of activity concentration of each radio nuclides in soil, absorbed dose rate in air due to soil activity and possible cosmic radiation at each location along with human effective dose equivalent for Udagamandalam environment are presented and discussed.
As the pine wilt disease spread rapidly over Korea in recent, aerial pesticide spraying to the infected pine stands increased abruptly. The increasing aerial pesticide application for control of the disease would result in disturbance of soil ecosystem in pine stands. This study was conducted to assess the disturbance, using field experiment in pine stands of Hongleong experimental forests in Seoul with BACI experimental design with three sprayed plots and three unsprayed plots of $25m^2$. We sprayed fenitrothion of 0.0335 kg a.i./ha over each of the sprayed plots, being the same as the pesticide residues of litters after aerial spraying. The pesticide had been applied on 4 June, 11 June, and 29 June in 2002, comparable with the dates of the aerial spraying in the previous year in Busan. We monitored population of soil organisms including arthropods, fungi, bacteria, and actinomycetes at two sampling days before pesticide application, at two sampling days during the application season, and at three sampling days after last application for two months since late May in 2002. The pesticide applications did not make any significant effect on the population of arthropods, fungi, bacteria, and actinomycetes in soils and on the structure of soil organism community, showing low probability of significant effects of the aerial pesticide application on soil organisms in pine stands.
To assess the soil quality of Chonan City, soil analyses were conducted according to the 14 different sampling sites. The soil pH of the agricultural area near the expressway was lower than that of the other farming area, which indicated that this acidification was probably attributed to the acid rain caused by the traffic exhaust gas such as SOx and NOx. Acidification was more severe in the dry farming area than in the rice paddy area. All concentration of 6 different heavy metals (As, Cu, Cd, $Cr^{6+}$, Hg, Pb) and organic contaminants (cyanide, organic-p, PCBs, phenols) were found to be lower than the standard of soil pollution. The concentration of BTEX also lower than the standard of soil pollution. An assessment using the SPI (Soil Pollution Index). which was developed to estimate an overall soil quality, was performed. Each SPC (Soil Pollution Score) were evaluated with the results of the data from this study. The soil quality of most area of Chonan City was determined to Class 1 , which indicated that the soil was healthy.
The objectives of soil investigation in risk assessment of contaminated sites are to characterize the level and area of contamination, and provide the important physical and chemical properties of contaminated sites for later exposure assessment. This study suggests two soil investigation strategies to be considered in the soil risk assessment in Korea. First, soil investigation for characterizing soil properties is additionally required to the current investigation method that has focused on chemical analysis. Second, application of statistical concepts to soil investigation plan and soil data analysis are required for confidential decison-making on contamination and determining the exposure soil concentration. This study provides a practical soil investigation strategy to involve the current Korean soil analysis guidance with the minimum sample number required for satisfying statistical limits.
Water management is the most important and difficult problems in red pepper cultivation. The water requirement of red pepper is different according to the area as well as climate condition, growth stage and soil texture. Also, the measurement of evapo-transpiration (PET) and crop coefficient (Kc) is very difficult especially in field cultivation. The average PET during 30 years of southern region of korea for the red pepper cultivation was a $2.75mm\;day^{-1}$. The water saving irrigation manual with irrigation interval and amount of irrigation according to growing season and soil texture, are developed based on the lysimeter experiments carried out by the RDA for 11 years about potential evapo-transpiration, crop coefficient for the 17 southern region of korea. The water saving irrigation manual can be used with easy to the farmer without soil sampling and any kinds of sensors measuring soil water status.
This study was Performed to evaluate the contents of heavy metals in water, sediment and soil of the 7 different sampling points along the West Nakdong river, The results were as follows: the concentrations of Zn, p, Pb, Cd, Mn, Cu and As in the sediment were 197.48, 551.85, 67.01, 2.54, 491.39, 42.95 and 10.52ppm, respectively. The concentrations of Zn, p, Pb, Cd, Mn, Cu and As in the soil was 83.32, 482.89, 17.15, 1.02, 226.02, 26.15 and 7.29ppm, respectively. The concentration ratios of heavy metals In the water to the sediment were 593 - 12700 (Cd >> Cu > Zn > Mn > As > Pb) and that of the water to the soil were 152 - 5100 (Cu > Cd > Zn > Mn > As >Pb). The correlation coefficients of Cu and Pb weve high among the water, sediment and soil. Because the accumulation amounts of heavy metal in the sediment were high, the concentration of heavy metals in the sediment was higher than in soil. The correlation coefficient of heavy metals among water, sediment and soil was high (0.79 - 0.95). Key Words Distribution Characteristics, heavy metals, West Nakdong River.
To investigate the relationship between the atmospheric pollution level and the pollution level of soil adjacent to the roadside in Suwon suspended particles and soil samples were collected in August to October 1993, and analyzed by AAS and ICP. The Ca, K, Mg concentration in atmosphere were observed as high level and assumed that it was effected by the acid-rain originated from the erosion of concreate vicinity to the roadside, and the Pb, Zn concentration were higher at outer area than that of central area. Hazardous heavy metal (Cu, Pb, Zn) concentrations in soil were observed as high level at all sampling sites. The relationship between the heavy metal concentrations in the atmosphere and those in the soil were analyzed, by using the correlation coefficient value(r) and the result was appeared similarly. And this study indicated that the atmospheric pollution affect the level of the soil pollution adjacent to the road side.
Quantitative information on biomass and available nutrients are essential for developing sustainable forest management strategies to regulate atmospheric carbon. An attempt was made at Chilapatta Reserve Forest in Duars region of West Bengal to quantify its above and below ground carbon along with available "N", "P" and "K" in the soil. Stratified random nested quadrats were marked for soil, biomass and litter sampling. Indirect or non-destructive procedures were employed for biomass estimation. The amount of these available nutrients and organic carbon quantified in soil indicates that the forest soil is high in organic carbon and available "K" and medium in phosphorus and nitrogen. The biomass, soil carbon and total carbon (soil C+C in plant biomass) in the forest was 1,995.98, 75.83 and $973.65Mg\;ha^{-1}$. More than 90% of the carbon accumulated in the forest was contributed by the trees. The annual litter production of the forest was $5.37Mg\;ha^{-1}$. Carbon accumulation is intricately linked with site quality factors. The estimated biomass of $1,995.98Mg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ clearly indicates this. The site quality factor i.e. tropical moist deciduous with optimum availability of soil nutrients, heavy precipitation, high mean monthly relative humidity and optimum temperature range supported luxuriant growth which was realized as higher biomass accumulation and hence higher carbon accumulated.
In order to obtain the basic informations on the reasonable fertilization and soil management systems for a high soybean yield, both soybean leaves and soils were collected from 24 soybean-cultivated fields in central area of Korea, and analyzed. For this study, soybean leaves and soil were sampled together in July of 1988(growing season), and soil alone in October of 1988 (harvesting season) and April of 1989(sowing season) at each sampling site. The results might be summarized as follows: 1. The soil pH ranged between 4.8 and 6.8. and the pH after harvest decreased to 5.4 which compared with the pH 5.7 of growing season. 2. Both the 1N KCl extractable Al and the 1N $NH_4OAc$ extractable Al in soils were inversely correlated with the soil pH. the former concentration was negligible above pH 5.8. 3. The soil total-N and Bray 1-P after harvest were lower than those of growing season. The Bray 1-P's of sample soils were very high irrespective of sampling time. 4. The exchangeable Ca and Mg in soils even after harvest varied little whereas the exchangeable K decreased with time. 5. The N content in soybean leaves was not correlated with soil total-N, but highly correlated with the K content in soybean leaves. The Mg content in soybean leaves was also highly correlated with Ca content in suybean leaves and exchangeable Mg in soils.
